Post Japanese hardware sales, Jul. 30 - Aug. 5: Generation gap edition (Joystiq)

The above commercial always brings a smile to our horrifying "editorial we" amalgam of faces, reminding us that despite the abundance of oppressive red arrows this week, the people of Japan are still storming the stores to purchase gaming hardware. Said hardware tends to be the ubiquitous DS Lite, of course, but there was a time when the GBA enjoyed a much better view compared to its current position.

When (if?) the DS Lite ever finds itself at the bottom, what magical device could possibly be at the top?

- DS Lite: 135,729 14,765 (9.81%)
- Wii: 61,498 15,671 (20.31%)
- PSP: 33,886 1,182 (3.37%)
- PS3: 24,289 4,540 (15.75%)
- PS2: 12,784 1,027 (8.74%)
- Xbox 360: 2,691 1,181 (30.50%)
- Game Boy Micro: 413 150 (57.03%)
- GBA SP: 228 -- 0 (0%)
- DS Phat: 75 15 (16.67%)
- Gamecube: 68 34 (33.33%)
- GBA: 0 41 (100.00%)

The Japanese never really warmed to the X-Box. I believe the 360 is doing better, but it's still not popular. It's crazy how well the PS2 is still doing though; it's going to run forever!

I swapped mine for a GC years back, but I'm gonna have to buy one again. Can't let FFXII slip by, and certainly can't afford a PS3 yet.

I'll always be a Nintendophile, but the Final Fantasy series will always sell consoles as far as I'm concerned.

The price was surely reduced. They've been as cheap as £25 in the UK having launched for about £60!

Hell, for that money, it's worth sticking one in the glovebox of the car with a few cheap-as-chips GBA games in case I break down.

I know what you mean. My last gen console was a PS2, and I boxed it since I thought it was a dead format, but they're still producing top games for it, so I've pulled it out of the box again. If the Wii has games of the quality of God of War, Shadow of the Colossus and Odin Sphere this late in its life cycle, it'll have done well.

Shadow of the Colossus was probably the Best Game I Watched Someone Else Play. My mate loved it and it was great helping him figure out each of the bosses.
