Post Final Fantasy IV: The After Years coming to Wii

It seems that Nintendo's recently discovered trademark for "The After Years" was, in fact, referencing a Wii port of the cell-phone based follow-up to the SNES role-playing classic Final Fantasy IV. An ESRB rating for the sequel confirms that the game will be hitting North American Wiis, though a time frame for its release, or even its release format (retail? WiiWare?) has yet to be revealed. The ESRB stamped the title with an E rating, as it doesn't classify the frequent usage of the word "spoony" as inappropriate for adolescent ears.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, which was released in an episodic fashion on a number of Japanese mobile platforms last year, follows the exploits of Ceodore (the progeny of FFIV protagonists Cecil and Rosa) nearly 17 years after the events of the original game. It'll also feature appearances from other major characters from the SNES title -- well, the ones who survived, anyway. Those who played the title will recall that FFIV was somewhat Hamlet-esque in its final body count.

Wow, a sequel to one of the main Final Fantasys on a home Nintendo System? Cool.

Yeah, the fact its based off a mobile game, but we ll see what happens...

I'm curious about how this game would be released for the Wii because it's the sequel to my number one favorite Final Fantasy game. Though personally I'm leaning more toward WiiWare.

Oh God yes!!! I don't care what the format is—I will buy it 100 times!

Knowing Square, I'm guessing this will be on WiiWare and will maintain the episodic nature of the original game, meaning we'll have to spend more and download episodes over whatever period of time. I can't see this being compiled into a retail game at all.

I agree, WiiWare is the most likely candidate for this. It's a mobile game and I don't see Square-Enix completely remaking it for a Wii retail release.

Same here.

BTW, the game is a cell phone port. Will it really be too big for a single Wii Ware game? I'm betting it's smaller size than MLaaK, myself.

It won't be big, especially if every episode of the original was only 500 yen. But if Square wants to milk it, they'll milk it.

Maybe they'lll just release the whole thing for one large sum of money? Saves time, that's for sure.

But who cares, it's the sequel to my favorite Final Fantasy game!

I was gonna get it, since FFIV was one of the few Final Fantasy games I liked, but now that I heard that it was episodic, I'm opting out. I'm not spending a fortune for what is essentially a 17-year-old game.

The original version in Japan is episodic. That doesn't mean the WiiWare version will be. Also, it's not a 17-year-old game, since it just came out last year...

But it probably will be. Of course, if it isn't episodic, then I may look into it.

It looks an plays like a Super NES game. To me, it might as well be 17 years old.

If the gameplay is good, the gameplay is good. The story is all new. You're basically admitting you're a graphics *****. Which is fine, I guess... we all look for that certain something in games we want to play...

So I'm guessing you didn't get Chrono Trigger DS, or Final Fantasy IV Advance/DS?

Still can't be bothered to care about Final Fantasy. Frankly, FFIV left me cold. *shrug*

Actually, I was referring to the gameplay, not the graphics. I feel that the genre has been greatly improved since 1992, so a game that plays like a Super NES game doesn't appeal to me all that much. Final Fantasy 4 was only really enjoyable because of its story, the gameplay itself was pretty boring. Unless they modernize the gameplay somehow, or manage to give the game a story of equal or greater caliber than FF4, I doubt I'll have much interest in this, especially if getting the whole experience costs so much.

I did get Chrono Trigger, and I wish I didn't; It wasn't as fun as I remembered it.
