Default The good and the bad on Donkey Kong 64

first of all this is just a thread so that me and Yogurt wouldn't be ranting on about the game on a different thread. i just want to hear what Yogurt had to say what was bad about the game.

feel free to post ur own pros and or cons about the game that you found.

for me i really liked the story, the new kongs, learning new moves, the graphics, the music, the multiplayer (boom headshot lanky lost a piece of watermelon),and much more. i'll add more later.
to note this game gave N64 a new look (and i'm not sure but i think when the game was released it came with the system too), and also this was a huge game that came from my childhood. i grew up with the game and i still have it.

It was a very well crafted, very generic platformer in a time when platformers were popular. It is by no means a bad game though because of the fact that it was more or less a massive collectathon (like most other platformers...). It's only real fault was the intro.

It had awesome music, awesome battles, really good graphics (at the time), great level design, lots to do excetera.

And the DK Rap ruled.

More Kongs = thumbs down. I don't think there should be any Kongs other than Donkey Kong and maybe, maybe Diddy Kong.

Boring collectathon with awkward levels.

Music and graphics were good though. I don't necessarily think it's a bad game, but there are better games out there.

Of course, I'm not a big fan of the DK series anyway, so that's my bias.

One Plus Point was the inclusion of Arcade Donkey Kong, something Nintendo refuses to give us for some unspecified reason on either of its download portals.
Surely it would be a huge seller boosted further by the rivalry aspect of King of Kong.

I loved this game and have some very fond memories of it. I spent a week solid playing this with my girlfriend many moons ago.

It was perfectly suited to her style of gaming which can be loosely characterised as 'me too'. If I play a level of a game then the usual thing is that on completion you move on to the next and progress through the game as normal.

My girlfriend prefers to play the same level AGAIN to show that she can do it and if she beats my score/time then all the better. With multiple Kongs we could play the game in this fashion without this driving me nuts and still make some progress and discover new things and locations.

The game had some great levels and some entertaining bosses (scary jack in the box! cardboard cut outs). I like collectathons and see no real difference between that and grinding for exp in RPGs.

The game made full use of the control pad and the addition of extra weapons and tools made it more than a typical platformer (at that time).

The later levels could drag and the last level was just mean.

It was a pretty good game, but it didnt hook me so much as Banjo Kazooie did. That would explain the fact I didnt collect all the Bananas (About 20 odd left? I dunno...)

Looking forward to DK 64 on the VC. One of my most anticipated releases so far (if it DOES get released).

It'll get released eventually. Nintendo will probably have to find a way to emulate it because it's an expansion pack title, and they'll probably need to fix the size issue with the Wii's memory.

But we'll definitely see it sometime.

I loved the game, but, yeah, there's so much to do that it's overwhelming at time.

After playing this again for the first time in ages I have a few niggles with the camera angle of doom (particularly for the K.Rool title fight) and the controls sometimes feel a little sluggish. It's still good though but playing without any sound can make some sequences tricky. Hopefully a new AV cable should sort that one.

Is Banjo Kazooie worth getting if I enjoyed DK64?

The bad: The emphesis on collecting a bunch of random and often useless objects.

The Good: Everything else.

Banjo Kazooie is an awesome game that was better than DK64...even though that game was very good too

I love this game, the only 'problem' I could find is that as others have said there's so much to do it's overwhelming, which isn't really a problem. I don't mind the collecting at all, it forces you to explore the levels and get the most out of the game.

Huge amounts of stuff to do is a good thing indeed. Running through the same areas at least five times only because the developers thought it'd be a good idea isn't.

Pros: None
Cons: Donkey Kong Country 64 doesn't exist.
Title aside.

I guess it's kind of overshadowed, by Banjo due to lacking a lot of the crazy scenarios, which Banjo was full of. So it's less memorable.

The only problem with DK64 was that it lacked charm.

The good things:

-Longevity!

From all 3D-platformers on the N64 this one is the biggest pack.
BK is comparable to SM64. BT is about twice of those games and in DK64 you have it multiplied by five. There was so much to collect!!

- "Donkey Kong" and "Jetpac" arcade classics.

I loved both of the games on DK64. "DK" was included as part of the story mode in which you had to collect silver coins. One of those was hidden in a level of the "DK" arcade machine found on the factory stage of DK64. In the other game, "Jetpac" you needed to get a highscore in order to receive the silver medal. And you could unlock them for free play.

- Challenge and Exploration bonus

DK64 really has some huge stages. Each of those 5 selectable apes have their own moves and weapons and reach places you couldn't have reached with others. Theres just a big fat amount of things to do.

I wouldn't call it the bad things, but there were some things disturbing me:

- Graphics!

This is the only 3D-platformer that NEEDS the Expansion Pak. Well, originally DK64 came with it. But it's graphics aren't better than Conker's Bad Fur Day which didn't use the Expansion Pak at all. There is no significant graphical advantage from games like Banjo-Tooie.

Also, the enemies only appear when you were really close to them, unlike in BK, BT and CBFD where enemies drew in when they appeared at the end of the horizon far in the distance.

- Gameplay!

I was wondering... am I playing Donkey Kong? Or is this Banjo-Threeie??
Really if you've played the other games before (since they were made before) then you'll be a bit disappointed because this DK64 here not a Donkey Kong Country anymore. It's Banjo-Kazooie with DK characters.

- Music!

Banjo-Kazooie music! WHY? Where did the great tunes from the DKC series went down? The music was a huge letdown compared to the soundtrack of the DKC series. And damn, now DK even sounded like a Banjo game.

All in all I wished for another Donkey Kong Country and got disappointed.
it's BK gameplay in a DK mask.
nonetheless, I've beaten the game 500% because it was a fun and challenging experience so it was great in the end.

if it comes to the VC, for only 1000 points, i would pick it up. it will last you for some time.
(but i still own the original and could beat it there if i wanted)

I enjoyed collecting the various items, although it can become a bit tedious at times. The only part where it gets really annoying is getting enough bananas for the pig and hippo, especially for the last "boss."

The Good: DK64 is pretty cheap these days.

The Bad: But if you want it in good shape, you gotta pay almost double what an N64 VC release would cost.

It's not that different but the Banjos are much better. The worst think in DK64 was Beaver Bother.

I only got as far as having to play that Jet game to get the token to proceed. Were these after that? I stopped playing it due to not being able to beat that stupid Jet thing.

The first cart section appears in the first level.

Yeah, honestly, DK64 was the game that burned me out on collection platformers for years and years after I played it. I finished it, but by the time I got to the end it was really just a chore. And a few years later I remember trying to get into Jak & Daxter, and I saw it was well-made, but somehow it just wasn't in me to play through it. Running around performing tasks to collect x number of the same object just didn't appeal to me anymore. I could only enjoy more traditional action/platformers, like Rayman 2 and the Maximo games.

Mario Galaxy is the only collection/task platform game since that I've really loved.

Oh man I just remembered the DK Rap intro on this. This game got old really fast, but the graphics were pretty good and the world was nicely laid out.

Good parts of the game - The game itself.
Bad parts of the game - It's not on the Virtual Console.
