Default Nintendo 64: Retired to Storage

With the advent of backwards compatability, classic game compliation discs, and re-release/updates of classic games, there is often times ways to completely negate the need for certain older consoles.

Such is the example of my Nintendo 64. I only owned a dozen or so games for it back in the day, and of those, only a handful were really worth replaying on occation. The system's blurry visuals and goofy controller (by todays standards) more or less regulated it to rarely played status already.

Now, with the release of the Wii, with Gamecube backwards compatability and Virtual Console downloads, my N64 can take a permanant rest in storage.

Of the games I felt held up against the test of time, among the titles I owned, I can now play all of those on the Wii. Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 and StarFox 64 were three of these titles. With the Virtual Console downloads, I now have all three at the click of a Wiimote. With improved visuals (thanks the the Wii's enhanced graphics processor), and the ability to play the games with the superior Gamecube controller, these games have been given a breath of new life. The Gamecube controller's Analog joystick and simple button layout are ideal for these titles and make them much more playable and enjoyable than they ever were on the Nintendo 64.

As for the top two Nintendo 64 games that I loved and owned, I have the superior Gamecube versions of these games, with an added mode on one, and better graphics on both.

-The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Zelda: Master Quest disc)
-The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (Zelda: Collector's disc)

Enjoy your rest, N64, I will continue to play the best you had to offer on your little brother the Wii.

What was the point of this thread? Anyway, it is a shame that people who never delved far into the N64 library won't be able to play much from the end of Rare's golden age.

I meant to add at the bottom that I'd be interested in what others thought of the VC updates to the titles. I hit submit reply too soon. It does kinda seem like a waste without that at the bottom, doesn't it?

I guess my question to you is what's the point of your avatar? That's just nasty man.

Sin and Punishment was a good start on the VC. I downloaded that and played it for the first time on the Wii. We'll get more as time goes by I suppose. I'm excited to see what comes down the pipe next. Hopefully some of the Japanese TG-16 shooters that EU is getting will be in our NA Pipeline soon. Those games appeal to me, I am a big shooter fan.

I still remain confidentwe ll never see some titles. Don't forget, Ninty are too lazy to translate text heavy Japanese VCgames, hence why we have not seen Custom Robo V2 over here

If it was in Japanese in the first place, then I'm not missing anything by not getting it on the VC. But you're right. The VC will never 100% replace the original console with its full software library.

I got good game here for the N64 .
Tetrisphere is a great puzzler which is not on the VC .
The lattest game i got is Perfect Dark a great fps .

But still i do enjoy the 3 N64 titles i downloaded .

While some of you guys may prefer gamecube controllers but the classic controller works perfectly fine on all 3 games which are Legend of Zelda Ocrena of Time, Paper Mario & Sin & Punishment .

The 2 Pokémon titles on VC i got them on game pak & im not giving them up for the VC version .
