Post New Wii menu update 3.3 nullifies Twilight Princess hack

We've got some good news and some bad news. Let's start with the bad news: Nintendo's latest Wii menu update (3.3) effectively plugs up the Twilight Princess hole that served to foster a homebrew community - or, perhaps more accurately, it casts the homebrew community into a realm of darkness. According to the update, "Beacuse unauthorized modifications to save files may impair game play or the Wii Console, updating to Wii Menu version 3.3 will also check for and automatically remove such save files."

As for the good news, the Wii menu update also lets you move a Mii from from the Mii Plaza to the Mii Parade, and really, isn't that awesome enough to make up for killing homebrew? The countdown has begun for someone to produce a Wii downgrader.

Just as I thought, homebrew is done for the moment.

I'm glad I can finally watch my silly Miis run in the parade.

I don't see why slapping them into the parade screws them up for use in games, though... you'd think if they designed a whole update around this idea they could at least smooth over their in-game use while in the parade.

I downloaded the new update but I couldn't help to think that it's a waste for me. I couldn''t care less about moving my Miis from the plazza to the parade.

Does anyone know if this affects the GameCube only Freeloader (the one on the small disc) or just the Wii one? They work differently so here's hoping...

Well, 6-8 hours later, a workaround has already been found, Nintendo did not kill homebrew.

"Congrats to tmbinc and tehpola for finding a combination of two bugs in the code that Nintendo added that — when combined — allow us to fool their check into ignoring the TP hack. More info will be forthcoming — I still wouldn’t rush to update my system, anyway."

Nintendo will never kill homebrew. Any of these companies who think they can completely squash hacking and homebrew are crazy (for the record, Nintendo knows they can't—but they can try to make things more difficult). A workaround was entirely inevitable. All this means is we'll be getting bogged down with system update after system update for years to come.

What will be interesting is to see the lame system tweaks they use as excuses for releasing the updates. New Mii clothing colour options?!
