According to Mark Cale, CEO of Systems 3 (developer of Commodore 64), Nintendo is preparing to launch a new downloadable service for Wii to complement the virtual console within the next two months. Similar to Xbox 360's Live Arcade, this project would aim to provide original downloadable titles for Wii besides just classic titles. Cale stated that Systems 3 was working on Impossible Mission which would be released through this online mechanism as well as through retail.

Expressing some skepticism, Cale remarked that Nintendo would have tough competition with the service, stating "Microsoft are years ahead of the other two major players [Sony and Nintendo] in that regard. It really depends on when Nintendo are rolling out their strategy, which I expect will be within the next two months. At the moment we are focused on the retail launch and when Nintendo open up their services, what we've done is that we've made a commitment to try and make sure that the product is going to be one of the first products that can independently be brought away from the Virtual Console." But he offered that Nintendo could have a potential advantage because of its WiiConnect24 service.

Cale stated that he expects to hear more announcements from Nintendo within a few months.

I certainly hope this is true as I'd be very interested in some new original content.
