Lightbulb !Need help from people who play RPG!

Hey. I have never really played a true RPG game before (turn based) and I was wondering which one you think I should try out first to get a good introduction to the genre. It should be a game that I can get on the VC now or one that will be released soon. I really like gaming and I'm not stupid I have just never played RPGs. I have played and enjoyed Zelda games, but I am looking to expand into the turn based, free roaming games. Thanks for your help and I look forward to your responses.

I was thinking maybe Paper Mario or Super Mario RPG? But I kind of want one that has an overworld so Paper Mario isn't like that right?

personally, i don't feel that any of the rpg games currently on the vc are a good way to introduce you to the genre. Buy a PS1 and one of the Final Fantasy Anthologies to get a good feel for the greatness of them though.

If you really feel like you need to get one that's available now, i'd get Phantasy Star II or Breath of Fire II. If neither of those appeal to you, then wait for Super Mario RPG which is coming to the VC soon.

a good one to star off with would be paper Mario since it isn't too hard. Breath of Fire ll is good if your in to RPG's because it will eventually bring a challenge when fighting. It's also long and very good.

Get Paper Mario. The missing overworld map should be the only downside for you. It's a truly great game and well deserving its 5-star rating.

Yes, get Paper Mario. Other than Pokemon, it was my first RPG and I was able to beat it myself so difficulty shouldn't be a problem for you. Not sure why overworlds matter though....most RPGs that don't have them have some kind of shortcuts for getting around and maps as well.

Neither Paper Mario nor Super Mario RPG are really good examples of a traditional "turn-based" RPG. Those who are advising you not to confine yourself to the VC on this one are correct. The best true RPGs aren't on the VC and it doesn't look like they'll be there anytime soon.

My advice is to keep your eyes peeled for one of the FF1 remakes and check out FF4 (a good, uncomplicated traditional RPG). A GBA/DS will be your system of choice if you go this route.

yes for a total of $150 or so you can get a DS and a remake of a FF game thats portable. or you can spend somewhere around $70, buy a PS1, memory card, three FF anthologies, FFVIII, and FFIX. it's your choice.

Yogurt is right, as he should be - he agrees with me, don't start with Paper Mario.

Bah FF this and FF that. I have played almost all the FF's and they are great but the way people talked youd think they were the only RPG's worth playing. Although i do agree there aren't alot of real RPG's on the VC.

Get Phantasy Star II. Its a rock solid RPG.

Sword of Vermillion is an intersting one too. But its not for eveyone. Go With PSII for a sure thing.

Do they have Dragon Warrior on VC? If not they should...

PS: BTW FF X lost me for good. There are too many cut sceens and not enough action. Oh and the boy band look has got to go too. But hey if thats your thing thats kewl i guess lol.

I would suggest getting Paper Mario first because it's easy to get into and it is very enjoyable. It's a good place to start because it is simple where as the FFs or Breath of Fire can be complex if you don't know everything about them.

Maybe he already has a DS. The PS remakes of the early FF games are not great, and FFVIII and IX are not the best places to start for traditional RPGs (I would say avoid IX altogether). It can also be tough to find those PS FF games for under $20 a piece nowadays.

Nah, but the early ones are indeed shining stars of the RPG world. Just because they're popular doesn't mean they're not good.
