Well, I would have rather had either subtitles (like the Pirates of the Carribean movies) or at least made it "Act 1" rather than "Episode 1". At least with Act it fits the series better and it's not as common like with every Telltale game that has "Episode".

Fair point, but I would hope Act is used for individual stages. Part/episode/etc is good because it emphasises that they are each parts of one whole game, which is Sonic 4, and encourages that to be viewed as a whole wheras subtitles would make them feel like separate games. That's why I say part/episode is less distracting.

Not like I don't want this to be made, but I'm also not jumping on a couch screaming about this game either.
Well, it doesn't hurt that everyone gets quite hyped for every Sonic game...And when the game gets released, it instantly becomes irrevelant.

and there we have it all 3 consoles.

Motion controls for Wii/PS3... for some reason.

and it's called Sonic 4: Episode 1
Who's happy? I'm happy! I'll probably get all three versions, just to see the differences...or I'll just get the Wii version and the 360 demo, either one will do.

I wonder if they'll release all the episodes on disc?

Bah. Episodic just means that it's going to cost a whole lot more than a regular retail game.

1. I doubt it'll cost more than $60. Even if it's five episodes at $10 each, that's close, but not more than a common retail game.
2. If it's five full Genesis-game-length episodes, then it'll be way longer / more content than a common retail game, making it arguably more worth it anyway.

It better have additional content baked into that then, such as a boss-rush mode, unlockables, etc.

Nothing wrong with download only it's not exactly going to be a massive game so why would it need a disc?

Sonic collectors will have to make do for now besides they're collecting a whole bunch of **** games anyway.

A couple things from the website I'm not fond of:

They keep referring to Robotnik as eggman as they retell the story of sonic 1-3&knuckles

The homing attack is in this game...

It has nothing to do with the size, these days there's no problem downloading 2GB+ games. It's the reason I explained, if the game is good then it should be playable for much longer than just a few years after its release or else it's no more than throwaway entertainment. Sonic, and most games, deserve better than that.

It doesn't seem that bad to have a DLC only game. Think of it as improving the collector value of your console.

Considering Segas history I wouldn't be surprised if this ended up getting re-released on future consoles anyway or if the big 3 let you transfer your dlc to the new consoles.

Probably because that's what he's called in Japan. Yuji Naka may have retconned Robotnik as offical but does it mean any more than Nintendo trying to insist that Mario's Protagonist has the full name of Bowser Koopa?

I hope they remove it unless they make it work this time. The homing attack is a lazy device, why can't we be allowed to aim and jump normally?

I thought Mario's protagonist had the full name Mario Mario.

This is what spending 5 sodding days writing a report on statistics has done to my vocabulary. It's melted my mind so that I no longer know my pro's from my ants, which can get one into a lot of trouble with the law.

This one is too by dimps. Good news for sonic advance/Rush fans.

I'm not that big on rush/unleashed 2D sections being essentially "hold boost and jump every now again on the extremely linear level"

Still got hope for this game but the recent leaked footage showed some dodgy jumping and collision with enemies and problems with going up a loop de loop, hopefully just do to it being an early build.

The title screen and actual graphics seem kinda bland to me though, I'd of preferred actual 2D than all these 3D models, ah well.

Figured Id bump this up since we now have a release date. For those not aware :
7th Iphone/Ipod/Ipad - Not sure on Price
11th Wiiware (NA) - 1500 Points
12th PSN (NA) - £12
13th XBLA & PSN (EU) - 1200 Points/£12
15th Wiiware (EU) - 1500 Points

So what are you getting it for?
Is the price too high for an episodic game?
And what have you thought of the game so far based on the previews and trailers?
Ill post links to the trailers on the first post later on for those who havent seen them.

Discuss...

Also just so you know the game contains 4 Zones with 3 Acts and a Boss Act (So 4 Acts total). There is also a 5th zone that serves as a final boss much like Death Egg Zone in S2 or Doomsday Zone in S3K.

It'll depend on the reviews and feedback as 1500 is a lot to fork out for a WiiWare title. I am interested in it but am a little concerned at the near slavish fan service of recycled levels and bosses. I hope that it's a nod to the series rather than the developers saying "There. Are you happy now?!".

I also want to see what sort of replay value will be in the WW version. Will it have achievements, time trials and other modes? I share Ouenben's concerns about linear levels too.

Of course, it comes to XBLA on the day I go back to College. Looks like I'll have to get it on Wiiware and take my Wii with me.

I was worried about the recycled levels and bosses too. I cant really speak for the bosses since ive only seen the first one. And that looks identical to the Green Hill Zone boss except for when he alters his attack pattern towards the end. But it looks so easy that you dont really see much of that part. Hopefully the later bosses are a bit more varied and dont Rip-Off the previous bosses too much. For the levels though it seems like theyve added new bits to each of them to make them feel a bit more fresh. The only one that doesnt seem to have anything new is Splash Hill which just combines elements of Sonic 1,2 & 3's intro stages. But thats not really a bad thing.
Lost Labyrinth is based around Labyrinth on Sonic 1. But it has had a giant boulder that you ride on added, a Mine Cart ride added, A candle that lights the way for you and lets you blow up explosives added and several other parts added (Theres a few things ive heard about but havent seen myself).
Casino Street is based around Casino Night on Sonic 2 with a few elements from Carnival Night on Sonic 3 thrown in. Theres also the card platforms added in, A card corkscrew and some kind of Card Bingo (They like cards lol).
Mad Gear Zone is based around Metropolis Zone on Sonic 2. I didnt see much new here besides a Gear you run on to open a door, A Gear you run on to move further up in the level (But Metropolis Zone had something similar to this too) and some rotating platforms. But the trailer did make this level look challenging and fun too.
So there does seem to be new little gimmicks thrown into every stage which is pretty much what the older games did. Each level had something unique about it and its pretty much the same way here. As for how linear the levels are its something ive been concerned about too. Based on previews though it seems like they're are plenty of branching paths to take and it certainly doesnt look like a "Hold Right to win game".
Ive heard there is going to be a time trial and online leaderboards. Im not quite sure if there will be any other game modes and as for replay value there will be collecting the chaos emeralds and replaying levels as super sonic. Time Trial should add replay value too since if there is branching paths it could take some time to find the quickest one.

Based on everything ive seen and heard though I think the game looks like it could be worth the money and im pretty pumped up for it. I am looking forward to colours more but this isnt far behind. Im going to be getting it on XBLA (For HD & Achievements) and probably get it on wiiware at a later date (For the classic controller).
