Arrow Metroid review (vc-reviews.com)

Metroid - NES

Pirates have stolen and unknown life-form, recently discovered on the planet SR388. The life-form, called 'Metroid', is in a state of suspended animation, and according to analysis, was the cause of the complete destruction of SR388. Let loose, the alien could destroy countless other systems. ...

I feel that this review is unfair. Just because Super Metroid overshadows this game doesn't mean it's a bad game. I would give it 4 stars, at the very least.

3 stars isn't bad though. It's probably the most honest review of the game on the Internet. Compared to the 8.0 IGN handed out just because it's part of one of Nintendo's big franchises. A 3 star rating in 2007 is more than fair. Metroid has its faults and hasn't aged as well as other games from that era. The review is for people who have never played it not for those who have been playing it for the past 20 years. We know it's a great game because we've been playing it for decades and know the ins and outs of the game, but for a newbie (the audience the review was written for) it will be extremely difficult to figure out and is not particularly user friendly. It's not Super Mario Bros. where anyone can just pick it up and play and all you need to know is run and jump.

If I did the review I would've probably actually given it 2 stars. A lot of Nintendo classics have aged great, but Metroid isn't one of them!

I just don't like the fact that all the tunnels and passages are so extremely repetitive (Thus making it near impossible to see where to go sometimes), you lose track of where you are half the time and the vertical shafts are way too big. Couple that with the fact that you start with only 30 energy when you start (Even with a password), and enemies rarely drop large amounts of health, which makes it tedious to refill life, and you've got a very annoying game.

Sorry, but it really just does not hold up at all. I'd even say it's the most badly aged Nintendo game. Metroid II, while it also doesn't have a map, at least has the advantage of being linear and less confusing. Plus I believe items have names so you actually know what you're picking up!

Zero Mission's fantastic, if you want to experience the original Metroid I highly suggest getting that instead. It's the same story as the original game with the same locations and bosses, plus a few new areas and enemies! And if you want to torture yourself it includes the original Metroid as a bonus, so you can always play that.

if you absolutely have to get a Metroid on VC the choice is obvious - Wait for Super Metroid.

I was thinking about getting Metroid today because I haven't really played it. I played a bit of it on the Metroid Prime unlockable, but I sold MP since then. I know all about it's map-less repetition in the game, but I still wanted to own it on VC. Anyway, I couldn't DL it because my Dad's credit card is inactive at the moment. I think I'll just hold out for Super Metroid.

3 stars or not I had to download this. It's a VC title you can actually sink your teeth into and not just one thats a pick up and play with your friends affair (I already have enough mini-games to last me through this generation of games and the next). Well worth the 5 dollars for the soundtrack alone. Classic.

Metroid is a great game. I hope it will come out on VC soon and Super Metroid.

That's why I'm playing it old-school style: drawing a rough map as I go (which also notes where I found power-ups, secret passages, and places I can't reach because a certain ability is needed). I actually enjoy doing that. Haven't done it in so long. I have yet to get lost. I know I could probably find a map online, but what's the fun in that? I also consider that cheating, and cheating is for losers.

I'm not a big fan of the 30 energy when you revive, but I can deal with it. I'm still having fun with the game. =)

Eh? I thought Metroid was already available in the EU? Or is Sweden separate?

An interesting fact I noticed is that in the introductory text it is called planet Zebeth, not Zebes. I wonder why they changed it.

^^ It was a bad translation, it's Zebes not Zebeth. Not sure why they never revised it for this release. They did for the introduction to the VC version of The Legend of Zelda to change "Gannon" to "Ganon".
