Iwata Talks Development, Miyamoto & Wii Sports 2

Nintendo's leader talks shop with one of his friends.

Satoru Iwata president and CEO of Nintendo recently had an informal chat come-interview with Japanese site 1101.com. The discussion reveals many aspects of game development from Iwata himself and from stories of how Miyamoto has influenced him.

At times throughout the talk influential and such wise discussion takes place and is hard to believe that is was not all scripted (see the King and the Slave story). This type of talk and wisdom coming from a brief chat shows how intelligent Iwata (and subsequently) Miyamoto and friends are, and why their games never fail to disappoint.

One of the issues discussed that we think you will be most interested in is talk of a Wii Sports sequel. Don't get your hopes up as it seems that is not on their priorities list and will stay off for a long time to come. The reason stated is they want to “surprise people in a good way” and not take the easy route, EA anyone?

We're not going to take such an easy way, not by including seven new sports in the game since Wii Sports has five. We're not closing our doors to the possibility of a sequel, but it's definitely not coming out soon.

The bundled bonus disc that came free with the Wii is one of the most popular games for the Wii so it does come a little sad that we will not be seeing another version any time soon, but we have to trust Iwata and Nintendo; we know they will not let us down when it finally comes.

Wii Sports aside, we learn many things such as how Miyamoto's brain works:

He creates a mixture of left-prefrontal-oriented elaborate logic, and dramatic ideas that people are blown away by.

And some of his voyeur tendencies. If you turn around suddenly to find Miyamoto behind watch you intensely don't worry it is just his “View Over Someone Else's Shoulder” technique. Iwata explains in the interview how Miyamoto likes to watch a gamers reactions to a game and from that find the bad points and improve upon them.

The interview is very interesting and gives great insight to both Iwata and Miyamoto, but there is one major problem I found, it is Iwata's completely skewed view of our Miyamoto:

[On Miyamoto] “..he does make mistakes. After all he's not God, you know”

Blasphemer! How could he be so wrong.

Go ahead and read the interview in it's entirety. You'll find the English on the right hand side.
