The 3 current-gen consoles are of course The Wii, Xbox:360 and the ps3.

But what if Sega and NEC and possibly Atari decided to compete and made a new console and joined in the "Current-gen console war"

They would fail miserably. Thread over.

Joining in the middle of a "generation" would be too risky because there are already 3 established consoles, therefore not as many people looking to buy new consoles. The console would also be technically surpassed by the next generation. It's not a good time to launch a new console basically. Unless the console is absolutely revolutionary and can't fail.

No doubt someone else will make a console in the future, but not now. I think it would be great for gaming to have another manufacturer to mix things up, it has been too long now with the same three. It would, of course, be a dream come true if Sega started making consoles again.

Segas games on other consoles are good (some of them), they just need to wise up with sonic

A new console would have to come from a rich company with deep pockets and deep connections with other tech/elec companies. In order to succeed, it would have to be a next-next-gen console, surpassing the tech specs of every current console and doing some other stuff to boot (microwave, waffle-press, etc.).

But then it would be screwed when the time came for the real next-next gen, because so many resources would already have been sunk.

In short, epic fail.
