Metal Slug is a great 2 player game on the VC, But its 900 points and for around $20 you could get 7 Metal Slug games on disc.
Bonk 3 is pretty good, but the later levels aren't exactly perfect for Co-op play.

I would have said MK64 but now that the Wii version is out...not worth it. Maybe Streets of Rage 2 or Gunstar Heroes?
Edit: Almost forgot: Pokemon Puzzle League for N64. Awesome game... and Dr. Mario from WiiWare if you haven't already got it Last edited by Kuribo; 26th June 2008 at 03:51 PM. |

Bubble Bobble. If he's 8 he might like the cute graphics and the simple game play. It's even fun if your 30. It also gets very challenging.
Super Mario Bros. 3. It depends how much of a gamer he is, it might get a little hard for him if he hasn't played a lot of games. Mario Kart 64. Yeah the Wii one is out now, and he'll probably like that one better, but this one is only $10. Star Fox 64. It's pretty fun playing on the multiplayer. You can chose 4 different stages and three different modes. You just try and shoot each other down by using bombs, power ups, shooting....etc. Donkey Kong Country 3. I think this one might be the easiest one, so it's the4 best one for beginners, and it's still fun for hardcore gamers. It also has the most new things like different stages, mini games, and better graphics.

@ coire: Dunno if MS is such a good idea for an 8 yr old.
@ hidesertbiker: Besides those already mentioned you might wanna get Streets of Rage 1 and 2 as well as Golden Axe 1 and 2. SoF III is probably too hard and GA III...well, it sucks. ^^

Super Mario Bros. 3; the 2 player mode has both cooperative and competitive elements in it, but ultimately translates to alternating single play. Together, the players clear stages--you're working toward the same goal of beating the game, but only one player clears each stage. You do help each other along, though, as someone fails a stage, you are learning from each other ("oh, so there's a Piranha Plant there..."). The only time players can play at the same time is if you initiate a hidden minigame (a replica of the arcade game, Mario Bros.) where they can choose to compete. You can also use this minigame to "pass" your turn without losing a life--the winner gets to play next.
The game itself shows its age. It's short and simple--but also sweet. The rules of the game are simple, as are its controls, and your goal is always pretty clear--get to the end of the stage. Clear the stage so you can move foward; move forward so you can find your way to the game's final stage (defeat Bowser, rescue the Princess, eat some cake, hooray!). Yet there's still room to make your own path to the end of the game and to develop your own play-style. And there's little extras--coins hidden in the air, stuff down pipes, power-ups in normal-looking blocks--that keep the player on the look-out. For me, half the fun in the game came down to discovering a new power-up, hidden item house, or secret. Bubble Bobble: This is a 1 or 2 player game. The 2 player mode is cooperative only and a 2nd player can join into a 1 player game at any time (the 1st player need only press + and then -; this gives the 2nd player one of his/her lives and can be done at any time). You can run out of lives on the VC version of this game, but you also have infinite continues, as well as a password option. In this game, you and your friend have been turned into monsters by an evil (drunken?) wizard of some kind. The story never really mattered much back in the day. At any rate, the goal is to capture enemy monsters in the bubbles you shoot out your mouth and then jump on those bubbles. Success will result in those monsters turning into sweet, nurishing fruits & veggies! However, if you wait too long to get poppin', your bubbles will burst, releasing a very angry, fast enemy monster! These may be difficult to catch or avoid (if they touch you, it is YOU who turns into the sweet, nurishing fruits & veggies--no, wait, you just lose a life.) Clear the enemies on the screen, go to the next screen! Eventually you get to the big bad, the evil wizard. (I always have trouble with that fight.) Bonk 3: My husband and I like to play this together. It's a neat little platformer, and I get a kick out of jumping on the other player's head and riding around (in the game!) However, it's got some design flaws--if one player moves too far away, then another player scrolls off the screen. This isn't a terrible opportunity to work on communication--specifically, paying attention to where the other player is on the screen, what effect your plans will have on the other player, and communicating accordingly ("I'm want to move up now, I'll wait here until you can get to this platform.") However, that may be too frustrating to be worth it, or your son just may not be ready yet. As a stranger, I have no idea. Bomberman '93: This is 2-5 competitive multiplayer, or single player. If I were to suggest any puzzle-like game, I'd suggest this one. It involves bombs. And explosions. And really, what 8-year-old doesn't get a kick out of explosions? I mean, they go BOOM! (Hee hee, BOOM!) The intention in multiplayer is to be the last Bomberman alive. There are rules to how the bombs explode--for instance, the bomb automatically detonates after a set amount of time, causing a blast to extend left, right, up, and down in a straight line for a certain distance. Knowing these & other rules, players place the bombs strategically, intending for the other players to get caught in blasts while escaping them theirselves. The graphics of the game are bright and cartoony. When monsters or characters get hit by a bomb's blast, they may go wide-eyed and turn ashy--Looney Tunes level violence. The Donkey Kong Country games are also worth looking into--they're good platformers. You might consider a racing game like Mario Kart 64 or F-Zero X--I'd lean toward F-Zero X just because Mario Kart Wii seems like a much better investment.

I thought that post was odd also.
For an 8 year old, you can't go wrong with Sonic 2, Top Hunter, Mystical Ninja, and Pokemon Puzzle League. |
