Thumbs down What highly-rated games you have disliked

Being the opposite of the other thread, what highly-rated or overall well received games have you purchased/ played, only to decide that its really not your cup of tea so to speak? You don't have to hate the game, just find it not as enjoyable as the ratings say.

For me- I wasn't as thrilled with No More Heroes as I thought I should have been. I like the game, just not as much as the ratings say I should.

No More Heroes didn't get a lot of good reviews, if I recall correctly. Just saying.

Anywho, my list:
  • Left 4 Dead- Not fun without some competent friends to back you up
  • Super Mario RPG - Slow, boring, unintuitive combat; horrible platforming sections. It was pretty charming, but not enough to make up for the bad gameplay.
  • Team Fortress 2 - Couldn't find a class I liked
  • Call of Duty 4 - Just plain infuriating!
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask- The Time Mechanic slowly eroded my ability to care
  • Star Ocean: Till The End of Time - Awful story; worst voice acting I have ever heard; tedious, repetitive combat; Item Creation system was tedious, unintuitive, and unrewarding; Lame worlds - it's supposed to be a Sci-Fi game, yet you spend most of the game in medievel towns, in Medievel dungeons, using medievel weaponry; Top it all off with an excutiatingly long game length that loses its luster after the first ten hours, and you got the worst game I've ever played
  • Banjo Kazooie - I just couldn't get into this one. Might try again when I'm done with Banjo-Tooie, but somehow I doubt I'll like it.
  • Entire Mario Kart Series - Cheap. As. ****.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - Sailing was no longer relaxing; Dungeons were too easy, too small; Returning to the same dungeon over and over was absolutely tedious and unnecessary
  • Pokemon Pearl Version - Everything is either boring, or excessive, or boring and excessive
  • Guitar Hero III - Ditch the guitar gimmick, and add some better, preferable non-rock songs, and this would actually be pretty fun, for a little while at least. Of course, the whole memorization aspect pretty much kills it, just like in any other music game
  • Jak II - I can't ****ing navigate this ****ing rat-maze of a city for ****!
  • X-COM: UFO Defender - I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do.
  • Syphon Filter: Combat Ops - Syphon Filter should never be a run 'n' gun, and this game proves it - it's absolutely terrible in every way, and it's the biggest waste of $10 that I've ever gotten.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages - I just couldn't get into this one.
  • Mega Man 9 - I still need to try it again, but I couldn't shake the feeling that this game hated me. It was absolutely infuriating, and I never felt even the slightest amount of joy from playing it.
  • Mortal Kombat Series - Too clunky, and I didn't really like the whole style of the games

Metacritic seems to disagree.

Anyway:

Mass Effect
- no fun at all, awful combat and too much meaningless dialogue.
All Street Fighter games - I just hate them, far too restrictive and basic.

Mass Effect - I never got into it
Psychonauts - Haven't played it trough, but it feels like a PSX game so far
Final Fantasy XII - A MMOWoOP Game (Massively Multiplayer Online Without Online Play Game)
Chrono Trigger - Have just played the intro before getting bored, but it's mostly the character design that matters for me, Frogs don't make good friends.
Elder Scrolls after Morrowind - "But...what if we release the same game again?" "Good idea! Here, take a promotion"
Elder Scrolls V: Fallout - Fail
Castlevania IV - Just plain boring, Symphony of the Night is awesome though.

I love that game. It can be glitchy but it has some excellent level design and great humour. Keep at it and hopefully it will click for you.

I could have sworn there was already a thread about over-rated games but I can't seem to find it.....

Well, there aren't too many games I really dislike but there are a few:
Banjo-Kazooie: I had no problem with the story, music, or characters, I just can't get into item collecting.
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes: Maybe I just didn't play long enough, but I couldn't get into the gameplay mechanics at all.
Gunstar Heroes: I don't exactly dislike it but I was expecting something a lot better.

And uh, 0_0 at Mickeymac's post. You really don't like A LOT of well-liked games. What are you favorite games?

I came in here just to see what Mickeymac said. The guy hates everything. Ehhh... What didn't I like?

No More Heroes: The job minigames weren't fun, the normal bad guys were all the same, and the only saving graces were the bosses. That just wasn't a very interesting game for me.
I guess that's all I can really think of.

The only games I really dislike that are generally well-received are FPS games, mainly because I'm terrible at them. Quake, Goldeneye, etc. And I even like some of them despite my terribleness (Doom, TF2).

Most of the games people are mentioning in this thread are good games, so this is kind of an interesting experiment in realizing the deficiencies in our own perspectives.

I don't care for Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA). Turns out that the game moves far too slowly if you suck with timing-based mechanics (and I do!) I stopped playing somewhere in the game where a townsperson asks you to collect beanstones.

I really hated Final Fantasy X (PS2). The VA fills me with rage in a way no other game does, and the gameplay starts off... slowly. I usually get drawn into the combat of a FF game, exploration of the world map, or the characters or a plot hook--you know, something--within a brief period of time. FFX completely flopped with me. I only got in as far as to get to the mess that is the Blitzball "tutorial," which I took one look at before saying "**** it" to the game.

I found Grandia (PSX) frustrating as hell. The maps were huge and unnavigable. I ran around in circles in the starting town for hours because everything looked the same. I stopped playing while in the first dungeon, I think.

Most recently Final Fantasy IV.

I started the game again. Played one and a half hour. Died. Couldn't save the progress. Thrown the game back into the box. Want to sell it now and will never ever get The After Years. This RPG is so horrible!!!

Haha I gotta say I expected way more on Mickey's list!

Highly-rated games I dislike that come to mind:
sonic adventure 2 - Awful game. Only 1/3 level types is mildly enjoyable, too many new characters, vast decrease in quality from sonic adventure
Pokemon series since Gold/Silver - It's not so much I hate the game I just can't be assed to play the almost exactly same new game with a few new generic pokemon and some random new additions like the competitions. This series I shall not be returning to until vast improvements to the stale formula are made.
Guitar hero 3/WT - Not a bad series but with Activision's milking, lack of DLC songs, uninteresting 'new features' Neversoft fall very short of Harmonix's talent.
Mass Effect - Boring

I don't dislike many games, I can't stand SMRPG, as the gameplay is wretched, and everything else is nothing special.

I can't think of any other games I have that I wouldn't want to play, other than Yoshi's Island, which was just kind of boring.

I decided to look thru out of curiosity & what i found shocked me to the core .
Below mare a list of some of the games i found & my thoughts about it .

Final Fantasy Tatics Advance .
its a great game with great story & it even briught a tear to my eye at one point .
Yes i have gotten so in to it that it even brought a tear to my eye .
I certanily loved it

Final Fantasy IV
While i might haved played the appranlty broken GBA version but i have enjoyed it & gotten my moneys worth from it & Palom & Porom ended up reminding me of my younger cussons .

Final Fantasy X
While i agree that the gameplay wasnt the best but the story isnt that bad the only reson i havent completed it yet is because i gotten so many games since .

Pokémon Peal
While i might have the Diamond verson but there is very little difference to compaire the two so i can say its nerther boring nor excess its just a great game .

These are only some of my examples .

I never asked anybody to agree with me. What people think of my opinions is none of my concern.

Eh, I think you're posting in the wrong thread there, Kawaii. This thread is for games you didn't like, but got very high ratings, while to me it looks like those are all games that you thoroughly enjoyed.

Well duh!

And I agree with Mickeymac, you're definitely in the wrong thread.

I knew as soon as I saw the title of this thread, Mickey would dominate it.

Here's mine:

Timesplitters 2: The mission mode wasfun at first, but got frustrating quick, and I couldn't figure out where the hell to go in the story mode.

Secret of Mana: Gameplay felt dull and shallow, and the strike-and-wai combat was annoying.

Super Mario RPG: Easy, boring combat and a few really tedious puzzles/side missions (3D maze and the Boshi race, I'm looking at you!)

Castlevania: Clunky controls and high difficulty.

Final Fantasy X: Dated combat system, extremely linear, and overabundance of unskippable cutscenes.

Ninja Gaiden: Absolutely outrageous difficulty.

I also didn't like Rogue Squadron, but I felt that I didn't give it a fair chance, and am going to buy it and play it again when I have the chance, so I didn't count it.

Oh, I just remember another game series that is highly-rated but I don't enjoy: Gran Turismo. Sure, it has the best graphics I've ever seen in-game on the PS1 & PS2, but that doesn't make it a fun game to play. It is realistic in how it looks, but I sure don't feel like I'm driving a really cool car. I just feel like I'm playing a boring game.

I guess since people have listed them I'll jump on Pokemon Diamond and Secret of Mana.

Pokemon Diamond is really slow and boring with animations on, but with the animation off it speeds up enough to be enjoyable.

Secret of Mana, of which I've played about three hours of, has been nothing special, with boring hack 'n wait combat. But since I've played so little of it I'll reserve judgment, there's a good chance I'll like it later, and there's a good chance that if I force myself through it, it'll suck.

Final Fantasy VIII:

I hate that game.
Here's why:
The main character is the worst case of emo-personality (if you want to call it "personality") ever. The side characters are either hyperactive, annoying douchebags or pathetic, whiny idiots.
The story contains more plot-holes and inconsitencys than actual plot. In the end it doesn't matter much since Warning: Spoiler Below.
the ending renders the whole story pointless anyway.

Here some examples: Warning: Spoiler Below.
In the beginning you'll get the information that there is no wireless comunication in the world. But one of your early missons will take you to a broadcasting tower.

Another one: Warning: Spoiler Below.
One of the worst twists ever! We all grew up together and just forgot about it. Why? ....... don't know, maybe because of Guardian Forces?

Even mediocre mexican soap operas have a better script than FF8.
Finally, the game system which forces you to hours of boring grinding if you want your characters to fight effective. If you don't grind your only option is to use only summons in battle, which makes fighting pretty unbearable on long term.
Thats why i hate it.
IMO the guy responible for this **** should be punished in his afterlife for creating this abomination. He should be placed in an isolated room with a bunch of fat FF8-Fanboys in Squall or Rinoa costumes & be forced to play that game until the end of eternity.

Oh yeah, Gran Turismo series, I think it was ok up to the third installation but the fourth was pretty lame in terms of game engine and AI. I really hope that GT5 will fix all these problems since back in the PSX days Gran Turismo was the great thing really when the standards was lower.

Because I've never played Soul Caliber 3, and since I honestly don't intend on changing that. It would just be redundant when I've already played the rest of the series.

Oh yeah, I forgot about FF8...but then again, I've never played that game, nor do I intend on changing that any time soon - it only took a few hours of gameplay videos for me to come up with those same conclusions.

Oh, and pruned out my list a bit, taking out some of the ones I didn't play enough of to accurately judge, as well as a few that I needed to remove in order to get some people off my back. I also noted which ones I enjoyed. but not enough to warrant the high reviews.

Final Fantasy III (DS)
Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3(Wii)
Crash Bash(PS)
Crash Team Racing(PS)
The Legend of Zelda(NES)

About the last one, I don't know how to say it, everything worked, and it was inventive and all, but I found it unpleasant to play.

So it was just a frivilous post that had little to nothing to do with the topic?

Well, I got a couple of games I been dissapointed in.

Every zelda game, although none have been really bad exept the first, none have been "that great" either.

Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4. Not bad games at all, just not up to par with MGS and MGS2.

Little Big Planet, the controls annoys me to no end.

Condemned 2 , a bit to slow paced, but my dissapointment might stem from that I havnt played the first one.

Nyxquest isnt really that bad, but its way to slow paced for my taste.

Suikoden 4, not a bad game, most likely the best on this list, just that the extreme encounter rate drives me insane.

No more heroes, They should either skipped cencoring the game or writing with huge letter all over the front "CENCORED", totaly destroying the game for me, one of the reasons Im thinkin about flashin my wii.

Lunar Knights, "A game by Hideo Kojima? This must be good!"..**** no, its slow paced , boring, bland and totaly worthless, the only really BAD game on this list.

EDIT: How could I forget? Final Fantasy XII, worst final fantasy game ever, boring characters (exept Balthier) , the story as far as I got was boring, slow moving and just bleh. And the combat system was horrible, I miss the days of the old FF games , bring back the FFIV combat system plx =(

So another bad game (although not as bad as Lunar Knights)

For me its basically any FPS game like Halo or COD
other games that I didn't like was:

Super Smash Bros- I think the characters are cool and all that but I dont like the control style, I'm more like SFII/SFIV...

Castlevania series- I think its all cool but I just cannot get into the game, no matter how hard I try!

Phantasy Star series- I just don't like their Battle system! I have not tried IV so I'll withhold judgement on that one since everyone says its the best of the series.

I'm sure there is a couple others that have slipped my mind at the moment. I might add a couple more to this list

It is realistic in how it looks, but I sure don't feel like I'm driving a really cool car. I just feel like I'm playing a boring game.

Really? Maybe I won't get the game...

This website's name should be changed to VGnoncomformists.com It's depressing to see all of my favorite games on here. The wierd thing is, for the most part, I have barely seen any games that I particularly dislike (e.g. I don't care for Grand Turismo, but I don't like realistic racing games, so I'm not really a fair judge for how good it is). Hopefully people will begin explaining why they hate these games (well, there are so many/person, it might take a long time).

By all means, give the game a try if you're so inclined. I certainly seem to be the exception. I feel really bad about it, too, because the game was a gift from a friend who was visiting from abroad, and she was super-pumped to find it at the local game store. :[

If it was cheap, I would be inclined to get it...But it's kinda expensive. I don't really like to take chances with used PSX games that are $50 and up (complete). There are plenty of cheaper PSX games and RPGs for me to get Too bad you didn't get into it though.

PS I think I stopped playing at the same spot in M&L.

Eh, no offense, but you probably should've expected to see your favorite games on here, just from the title of the thread.

Isn't that what most of us have been doing?

Oh, and altered my list again(added some, removed some, etc.).
