Post This is how you make a portable SNES

We often want to play SNES, but our busy up-and-go lifestyle of blogging for Joystiq doesn't allow it. Thankfully, a modder over at Retroactive.be came up with a solution: the portable SNES you see above. Sure, it's not our first time seeing such a mod, but it is definitely one of the most stylish. Why, we haven't been so blown away since we've seen this same mod made out of wood!

Head past the break for a video showing off the device, then hit up our gallery below for some other impressive retro mods.

This definitely is one of the more stylish mods I've seen. I'd totally dig a portable SNES..... which is why I have a GBM/DSi, since 50% of their libraries are SNES games...

Old news. People have been doing this for ages. I subscribed to two people on YouTube months back who did this kind of stuff.

Still, this is one of the nicer ones of seen.

Personally, I like the fact that they keep refining these and cranking out newer and better models. Because I want one!

I tend to favour mine over the sp even though when they first came out I dismissed them as ipod like fashion over function.

Incidently how does GBA Lost Vikings compare to the SNES version? I'm thinking of picking it up for one of the formats. Does it have the missing levels from the Mega Drive version?

I'm not all the way through yet, but as far as I can tell it's the same game as the SNES one (i.e. no Genesis extras). The Lost Vikings is a wonderful game, though. I remember yelling at it as a kid.

Have you played the sequel? I noticed there's a Saturn version with different graphics and music that I might have to check out.

I wonder if the buttons are comfortable to use? And for some weird reason it kinda reminds me of the game.com console.

I always thought it had something to do with reaction to smoke but when I dug mine out from under the bed to mod it a few months ago...yup, yellow as a smiley. Must be something in the plastic.

You know, rather then creating NES Toasters and handheld SNES's, perhaps they can work on a cure for the yellowness if there isnt one... lol.

I believe the reason the systems turn yellow is because of sun light. My SNES is still grey.

Im wondering why this mod uses weird purple buttons i would have thought the modder would have use the orignal red/blue/green/yellow buttons that came with the SNES controller instead of using brand new ugly purple buttons .

Whoever designed the case for the Ameracian SNES must be on something while on a tour on a heatshrink factory .

Did you really have to answer that when the two posts after that post answered it already?

The only bad about this is the position of the speakers and the buttons/D-Pad. Those should switch place.

If you were holding it from the bottom, you'd get tired quite fast. It's probably topheavy, thus the reason you have to hold it from the top.
