Best Virtual Console Games

What do you think the best virtual console games are?

It’s a good question because the Wii Shop’s virtual console library is now really extensive and contains a huge number of titles.

The Virtual Console forums have already tried to find the best WiiWare games and indeed, the search for the best game ever is under way as well.

Most of the big video game review websites are showing the best virtual console games as being those from the Super Mario, Sonic and Zelda series. Based on the official sales of virtual console games these are definitely the best selling games, meaning they’re obviously the most demanding.

Which virtual console games do you guys really think really offer the best gameplay and/or value for money (or should I say ‘value for Nintendo points’)?

Foxconn Suicides – Nintendo Investigation

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Foxconn LogoFollowing the recent attempted suicides of over 12 people working at Foxconn production plants, Nintendo is launching an official investigation.

Foxconn is a large Chinese electronics company that produce many component for popular computer motherboards. They produce components that are present is the Nintendo Wii and Sony’s Playstation 2, 3, the Microsoft Xbox 360 and various products created by Apple, such as the iPhone. They have recently been under scrutiny due to reports of very poor working conditions for their employees.

Wikipedia has a dedicated article relating to the Foxconn suicides. It has the following to say on the matter.

Between Jan 2010 to May 2010, twelve Foxconn employees attempted suicide, with ten deaths. Some reporters criticized long working hours with low pay and harsh management methods such as physical abuse towards mainland employees from Taiwanese managers. Some workers have complained about the monotonous work schedule and inhumane working relationships (such as one employee who had worked for half a year and yet did not know the names of his dormitory mates). Compared to China’s overall suicide rate, the suicide rate at Foxconn is not statistically aberrant but the rapid rate of the suicides is unusual.

As CEO of Hong Hai Precision Industry, Terry Gou responded to the situation on 25 May 2010. Because of a huge number of employees, management is difficult, he claimed, but they will improve the situation soon. Now Foxconn has formed specialized “employee care centers” and hired psychologists to offer counselling. However such a measure is doubted by the public. In addition it has been announced that employees will be asked to sign pledges that state they will not commit suicide and seek help if necessary. Some suggest that Foxconn should change its management systems, philosophy, and methods to create a more human orientated business atmosphere.

There is a lot of discussion regarding Nintendo’s investigation of the Foxconn suicides on vc-forums.

It is quite horrific to hear that those workers helping to create products we all use for entertainment are being so poorly treated. With all hope both Nintendo and Sony’s investigations will help to resolve these issues and improve working conditions at the Foxconn factories.

Project to find the Best Game Ever

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Jogurt The YogurtAfter seeing all the hype and all the complaining about Ocarina of Time, after seeing all the debate about the merits and disappointments of each installment in the Final Fantasy series, after reading about the awesomeness or suckitude of collectathons or Super Mario Sunshine, I’ve decided to embark on a little project.

I’m drawing some inspiration from GotY votes and Tides of Chaos’s system-best polling. I’d like to undertake a massive request for nominations for the best game ever, on any platform. This will be large-scale and will result in voting, potentially bracketed depending on how people like that idea.

THE RULES

NOMINATIONS: You may provide a list of up to 100 games. You’re free to nominate fewer than that if you like. Number your nominations, and don’t edit your posts. If you wish to add more nominations, just make a new post continuing your numbering from where you left off.

(NOTE: This doesn’t mean you have to RANK your nominations, just number them. I don’t care what order you put them in, I just want an easy way to keep track of how many nominations are coming in from everyone.)

SCOPE: This nomination process includes all video games, past and present, on any platform (including PC/Mac and Arcade cabinets). Be sure to mention which platform your game is on so I don’t have to track you down and ask for clarification.

BEST?: You can nominate games according to your own criteria. They can be the games that you think are objectively the best, or your favourites, or games you feel are influential.

STATS: I’ll be compiling very basic stats during the nomination and voting process. All I’ll need to know is your age and game release region (for most here it will be NA/EU/AU).

All of these nominations will be pooled and sorted, and then we’ll find ways to narrow them down and begin voting. We may have genre- or platform-specific side-events as well.

I’ll think on my list for a bit and probably try to post a chunk of it tonight.

This is a thread by Jogurt the Yogurt from the Virtual Console forums discussing the Best Game Ever project, to find the best video game as voted for by our members.

Wii Virtual Console – Screen goes blank / black at 480p

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Nintendo Wii and WiimoteThe Wii Virtual Console is a fantastic service for playing Nintendo retro games. Unfortunately, there are a few bugs regarding playing some virtual console games at the 480p resolution.

Some older games simply were only designed for interlaced display, and not progressive such as with 480p. The Wii makes this mode for Virtual Console games available via the component cables. The result can however be that the games start successfully, and you can here the sounds, but the screen goes completely blank.

How do you fix this? Easy.

Take a look at this extract from the Wikipedia Virtual Console article which tells you how to get around the issue.

Initially, some PAL Virtual Console games would not display correctly on high-definition televisions when connected via the component lead. However, starting with the April 13, 2007 update of the PAL Virtual Console, certain newly added games, such as Punch-Out!!, support the “Wii Component Cable Interlace mode.”

This is a temporary fix to problems with various Virtual Console games being played over component cable on HDTVs. The mode can be enabled by accessing the operations guide of the game, and (with the Nunchuk attached) pressing the buttons Z + A + 2 simultaneously. A sound is played if the mode is enabled correctly.

Several older games also have updates available to enable the feature, such as Super Castlevania IV. The mode can be disabled by using the same method, but with the button combination Z + A + 1 instead. A full list of games supporting this mode is available at vc-forums.com.
