Default 3.0 update added USB keyboard support

"Reports from around the Internet have revealed that this new firmware update also supports USB keyboards for text input in the Wii Message Board area. We have confirmed this to be true."

"Seems Nintendo have quietly added USB keyboard support for the Wii."

Sweet. Hopefully Opera will update the Wii browser to include keyboard functionality as well.

Great news, especially for Mendez who is constantly accessing these pages through the Wii.

Would it be too much to ask Nintendo to e-mail out those who've registered their Wii with details of how the upgrade has changed things?

I can't see that it would...

So, how's that anyone didn't try playing directly from SD cards?

I noticed there are several things Nintendo didn't tell us about.
As I was saying to tull, the wired LAN configuration, added a lot of details. It seems you can also configure a proper LAN with a hub and other Wiis, though actually it would be useless.

Post Wii update quietly adds limited USB keyboard support (Joystiq)

The latest Wii system update is just the gift that keeps on giving -- we're still finding new, unannounced features included in the downloadable update. Case in point, you can now plug a USB keyboard into those vestigial USB slots in the back of the system for easier text input in some situations.

The support is far from universal -- while you can use the keyboard to type out message board messages, you can't use it to enter a name for you Mii, suggest a poll question on the Everybody Votes Channel or, most importantly, fill in web addresses and forms on the Internet Channel. The Wii Shop Channel, oddly enough, does support the keyboard for typing in search terms, and it was the only channel to receive a significant overhaul in the latest system update. Could more expansive keyboard support be on the way? You'll know as soon as we do.

[Thanks James]

Just tested it with the keyboard and can confirm that it works.

It won't work on Opera since that's 3rd party software so that won't be affected by any of Nintendo's updates, althouth after this I'm sure keyboard support won't be long. If they add tabs as well then I can see the Wii replacing my PC before long for web surfing purposes.

We live in hope. Extended support would be more than welcome...especially for the internet channel, obviously.

Actually not.
It's just limited to some OS related section, like writing messages in the board.

: )
This means that probably the smoothness of the installation in previous version didn't catch my attention to search for advanced config.
