Water Warfare - WiiWare
800 Points

I thought long and hard over this month's choice. It may be a little unusual but I will explain my reasoning.

Quote:
1. There are many games out there that people might actually love but are unwilling to take a risk on...The idea in such a club is that it would introduce people to new games that they might otherwise pass over.
This game has not been downloaded by any of the members of the VCF Gaming Club. It seemed a good idea to pick a WiiWare game for variety especially as some of the members have a fearsome collection of downloads making it difficult to find a good title that hadn't already been played to death.

The game has had a reasonable response from metacritic/gamerankings but it has been a mixed response on various forums with some people citing it as one of their favourite WiiWare games and others decrying it as shovelware.

This should give us plenty to chat about.

Quote:
3. It helps keep the VC-forums community alive and fosters a greater sense of community as people help each other out and get through the games.
This WiiWare game has online and local multiplayer so we have scope to actually have some matches together on an informal basis. The Nintendo Life forums have an active community of Water Warfare players so there is also an opportunity to get them involved.

The family friendly nature of the game means that VCF Club members with kids or younger siblings can also join in.

This is definitely a game I would not have gotten if it wasn't because of the club.

Interesting! This is funny because I gifted my friend this game a while ago because he likes these types of games, he'll be laughing knowing that I now got the game too.

Hurray, somebody finally picked Wiiware!

Very interesting choice, of all the Wiiware out there this is probably passed way under many people's radar and I have to say I'd forgotten it existed.

I think I'm one of those who dismissed it as shovelware but reading the reviews and seeing that Hudson developed it has perked up my interest.

Looking forward to giving it a blast tomorrow morning.

One question though, can you create multiple profiles on the game or is it like ACR where the game only lets you have one?

Awesome choice.
I don't have the game. I was once on the fence, one trigger away from downloading it, when I decided to go for something else.
And never came back to it. Until now.

And we will have enough players for some tourneys.

I wonder why they went for designing your own characters rather than incorporating Miis? Is there some sort of development charge for using Miis?

One theory is that Nintendo won't allow Miis to be used in violent games. This argument doesn't really pan out when you remember that you can use Miis in Bomberman though.

Wii sports boxing seemed to be about slugging people in the face last time I checked too.

Gonna download the game now and get an hours practice in before I go to bed

I think it would be nice to start listing our Friend Codes and if we have Wii Speak, so I'll start:

enigmaopoeia - Friend Code: 0045 - 3194 - 1597 | Wii Speak: Yes.

If we don't have Wii Speak, can we still hear people in-game who do?
How many simultaneous players does this support, four?

I just downloaded the game, so I'll post again when I get my friend code.

YES! I thought it was 1000 Wii points for a sec' there. Only have 800, so it'd be a real bummer if that was the case.

The game looks interesting (at least more than Modern Warfare in terms of artistic styling). It'll be kewl to VS each other (sadly, Wii Ware has few online multiplayer games and VC doesn't support online )

Nice pick. I've always wondered how it felt using the CC for this, since its the first FPS to use it I think?

Just spent an hour playing the game and here are my first impressions:

IT'S FREAKING AWESOME!

Good news to begin with is that there are 4 possible slots for character data meaning there should be more than enough space for the average family to create their own character/save unlike previous wiiware efforts such as ACR.

I played through the training modes. Nothing special, they basically just teach you the controls and culminate in an easy boss fight then I played a couple of missions, some find and destroy the targets and finally some deathmatch in a large playground type environment.

Instantly this became the most fun. Had great fun experimenting with the variety of weapons (all water based of course); shotguns, sniper rifles, waterbombs, machine guns, dual handed pistols and more mix it up with special items such as bananas, roller skates (to skate with) and interesting twists on health (towels to dry yourself) and armour (raincoats, umbrellas) etc.

Beat the first three missions and thought, yeah this isn't a bad game then loaded up the Wiifi.

This is where the stuff is at. Had some tremendous fun getting my **** handed to me but was very pleased to see the game has tons of people playing it (again unlike ACR) and was able to engage in regular three player bouts. Only played the standard last man standing with each person respawning 3 times. Gradually got better to the point where I was able to take some people down and spot the campers who run straight for the high ground to snipe (nb. the beach seems to be the big favourite course with the "only ever pick the course I'm best at crowd").

Eventually after about 10 or more attempts I was finally able to register a victory so called it a night.

You get awarded points based on kills/victorys although I'm not sure what they are for and there's a medal system for the standard missions based on times recorded.

I've already unlocked some extra gear for my "not-a-Mii" so I presume that unlockables are a feature.

Only niggles so far have been that the screen gets kind of cluttered at times and that you have to sit quite far back with the Wiimote to avoid pointer-jam but other than that suberb fun. I also enjoy the way you have to recharge your water, it reminds me of laser-quest from the 90's!

Yossarian, well done, this was a great pick.

Viva la gaming club!

You can have four players online and 2 local I believe. Four different profiles are available. I don't have Wii speak but you can use preset prompts such as "lets wait a while" etc in the pregame room and the game was flashing up messages from people during gameplay though I'm not sure how they did it.

I thought UNO was the first WiiWare game supporting Wii Speak.
So.... Water Warfare will be a silent killing.. eh, wetting.
And Wii Speak is rendered useless in this game.

There does seem to be some way to communicate in game via text but I'm not sure how its done. I saw one guy yell "chaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarge!"

You can by pressing the directional keys while in the stages.

But you can only set them to 24 preset phrases in the "Message Selection" option of the "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Mode". So it's not like the messages in Brawl.

I am having a lot of fun with Water Warfare myself. If you liked playing with water guns as a kid, you'll love this game. The playground stage that I'm on is very imaginative.

PS If only I could jump 10 feet in real life.

I'm glad that you're enjoying it. I thought the single player mode may not be up to much so I'd encourage you all to use the online modes as much as possible.

I haven't had a chance to play yet but I'll try and have a go tonight.

Doesn't seem to be anybody about in the afternoon (Swedish time) but there were loads of people playing last night. I wonder if that's a sign that the game is more popular in Europe than in NA?

I'm onto the beach missions at the moment. The missions are fun but the online is definately where this game is at. Has anyone tried local multiplayer?

Finished the beach and unlocked the "Not Delfino" Plaza this morning. Having previously unlocked "Rabid Rabbit" as a "Not a Mii" and noted the rather ditinctive looking face on his headware I wonder how many loosely derived copyright infringments Hudson are going to go after in this game

In fact playing on the beach and Plaza levels has really made me wonder if Nintendo didn't drop the ball somewhat by not trying something similar to this with the Super Mario Sunshine licence attached to it.

Water is as much fun to play with in videogames as it is in real life but most developers don't really use it in any sort of creative way other than as a instant death or swimming section.

Credit to Hudson for making such a uniqely orginal game.

The games "not a Mii's" are also giving me a craving to play Jet Force Gemini again as they share that games distincitve visual style.

I played this a little last night and liked it so far. It controls well and looks pretty good too. My wife thought it was cute but she generally feels that way about WiiWare games (based on the few I have). I may try the online once I get used to the levels and gameplay a little more.

Advanced a bit further in the mission modes. Defending the shops in "not-Delfino" Plaza ws the toughest so far but I beat it eventually after keep running out of water.

I've discovered through the world rankings that there are around 3000 people playing online. I'm currently ranked 92nd in GBR (even though I'm actually in Sweden) but I'm getting better. I played some 3 way deathmatch and after getting owned for a bit started to make the playground my own after a few matches. I like how you get points assigned to different things like "first hit" and "traitor" (whatever that means). I have about 200+ points so far online but the top guys on the leaderboards have already maxed out at 9999 and have all sorts of impressive trophy's etc.

To restate once more: THIS GAME IS AWESOME.

What's keeping you all?

I've added everyone that has posted a friend code and finally got a chance to try it out.

First impressions have been good. A playground makes an interesting setting for a FPS and the controls have been good. I'm going to mess around with the control settings to see what difference they make. It's a pity you can't tweak them mid-game.

I like the way that the health bar is handled. It makes it a very different experience from the usual headshot = WIN tactics in these type of games. The graphics are fairly basic and blocky but they do have a certain PSOne charm to them and the music is reminiscent of Ape Escape.

I'm working my way through the missions and then I'll give the online multiplayer a go.

blasted through another couple of missions. Two to go before I unlock the last area. Played some team deathmatches online tonight and worked my way up past the 300 point mark.

Given that you average about 40 points per win, how likely is it that those at the top of the rankings have done it legit?

now 77th in GBR rankings btw.

Pretty good choice. I purchased it the day it was released and have been a big supporter of its original take on FPS games.

I've already unlocked everything Warning: Spoiler Below.
(and found the sneaking missions to be some of the most difficult and entertaining)
but have never really checked out my ranking online.

I'll post my friend code up later. At the moment I'm in bed with (possibly) swine flu. Bringing my Wii up to the bedroom might be an option, but my wife would kill me (seeing as she's laid up in bed with it too)

Hope to see you guys on WW soon!

I've been through all of the single player missions now. I enjoyed the game as I've played it. For what it is, it seems to be well put together and to have excellent controls, good environments, and decent graphcs. I should probably mention I normally don't like or play games like this. I have a personal aversion to mini-games which I can't altogether explain but that is certainly there. I did like this somewhat despite that though and am glad a WW game was selected this month. I'll have more comments and pribably a ranking later once I've spent more time with it, but wanted to share my thoughts as of now.

Finished my final essay tonight so I went and downloaded this. Added the given friend codes and played the tutorial. Gotta admit, single player holds little interest for me, but I'm up for some multiplayer with you folks.
