I live in the UK but I really don't like rugby... it's football all the way for me Or "soccer" as the Americans call it

their both descended from the same game. they split into rugby and football over disagreement over weather or not you should be allowed to hold the ball.

No...believe a Rugby (the place) schoolboy, William Webb Ellis, invented it because no one was passing to him because he was an absolute yard dog. He picked it up and ran with it...and history was made. Hence the William Webb Ellis trophy

The ever reliable wiki...

Personally, in fact hinted at in the wiki article, is that the Rugby authorities didn't like the true roots of the game as being created by a poor footballer and formed, nay INVENTED, a fictional account of it's creation in an effort to keep the beautiful game down. 'Old Rugbeian Society' indeed...just another example of 'the man' trying to keep people down!

If it's not true then why name the most important trophy in the 'sport' the Webb Ellis Trophy? Honouring a fictional event?

Apocryphal or not...rugby is a sport for those who can't play football.

because people never let facts get in the way of a good story.
