Default New Nintendo DS! Real!

Will you buy one? I'm going to sell my Black DS Lite to buy one, I won't need it anymore anyway.

I'd rather have my DS as a portable game system than a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none portable multimedia centre. I would have no use for a low quality DS camera or music player anyway, since I already have a real camera and a real music player.

Ugh.

I hope this isn't the future for portable games.

Wake me up when they come out with an actual new system rather than a minor upgrade that only includes useless extras.

I can't wait for a new portable console that can play games like Oblivion and Crysis.

So basically they are trying to turn the DS into a cell phone?

Just without the actual phone part...

Yes, I can already do most of those features with my DS Flash Card, but the camera would be a good feature depending on its resolution. The screens are going to be bigger too.

I think I'll stick with my Gameboy Camera and my cell phone for impromptu photo ops.
Honestly, I'm like Jogurt, I prefer my game machines to play games. I already have an iPod and a cell phone for everything else.

Although I wouldn't be against a DS Internet browser that actually worked...

Good point, still it would be nice not to have to take all your gadgets with you when you want to go somewhere.

The difference was that the DS lite improved upon the DS design (and is sexy!), where as this new design just adds superfluous extras.

My DS already plays music and I don't need a damn camera in my gaming device. Pass.

You shouldn't get your panties in a bind. As far as I know, this is still only a speculated rumor, just like previous rumors that have evaporated.

Until there's an official word (which I doubt will happen, anyway) I couldn't give a damn.

Nikkei's website says it's Japan's business news leader! I can't find any non-Nikkei information about Nikkei, though--in English, at least--although it's been referred to as a source by various game sites. (To be fair, I haven't tried very hard. I'm perfectly willing to let the truth out via the passage of time.)

I originally read about this from Wired. That article notes:

Nikkei says the new model will go on sale in Japan first, this year, and that a U.S. release is "being considered."
Reservations aside, I like the sound of this "better wireless" stuff. I rarely use our wifi, due to security issues. I'm not so sure about the whole "use the camera to take photos and use them in your games!" but hey, I wasn't sure about the dual screens or touch screen, either.

Here's what really interests me, though...

Quote:

And there might be more to this new model -- another version of the Nikkei report, since removed, apparently ran on a site called Monex and said that the hardware would have larger screens and be able to transfer data from the Wii or an SD card.
So do any of you guys remember how Nintendo Japan (and others!) recently took the makers of the R4 to court? They did! I remember thinking at the time that the timing was odd--specifically, waiting so damn long to go to court--unless Nintendo wanted to release their own storage device.

>_>

<_<

And, and, and! =D You know what ELSE can be stored on an SD card? Besides music?

Games!

Portable VC, anyone? :]

No offence to Nintendo but this is stupid I'd just buy a camera phone which by the way will probably be cheaper than this new DS lite + extras no thanx that's why they made phones: Music, Photo's, and other stuff while DS is for: GAMING on the go I'm gonna turn this down instantly sorry.

If it has some other upgrades (even better screens, even longer battery life) and if the music player function is good then yes I'd get one. I don't love the idea of integrated all-in-one devices usually, but I play quite a lot of DS and having the other features integrated as well would be quite handy. Wait and see.

Buying another DS just for cosmetic differences is the real stupid thing. Buying a DS with TRUE added features (like the stuff mentioned for the new one) is common sense.

I'd rather buy a Nintendo DS Lite since I have one of those silver originals.

Oh yeah, I already have a camera and an MP3 player.

Unless the true added features jack up the price while making the system worse.

To me it sou like this new DS will feature new games. Since the original DS games were ment to fit the the DS and DS lite. Now bigger screen with no new games would be pointless, since there would just be borders around the DS Games (and even bigger boarders on the gba games) I doubt the bigger screens would only be usedfor the camera and menus. And who knows, not everything has been annouced yet, and Nintendo never really has announced everything about their new "thing" on day one.

I personally will get it. As I don't have a Camera, nor a Mp3 player. SD card support would be a good way for developers to offer DLC as well. And better online is a great Idea. Although There will need to be some more stuff included. But no matter what get's added, I hope it's not multilayerd touch screens. If you think about it, it just wouln't work. I mean if the top screen was used manily for menu's, and little stuff that'd be fine. But when you get into the complex stuff, it just doesn't work. Not to mention If developers try to make you use both touch screens simotaniously. Such as connecting a line from the top screen to the bottom, or a bunch of combos switching from the bottom to the top screen.

Anywho, go Nintendo!

True, the DS lite was mostly a cosmetic change, but they did improve the screen, as well as the stylus. And I didn't rush out and buy a lite until my DS Phat (with a ph!) broke.
Plus the lite really improved the portability.
Oh and for the record I love the cosmetic changes.
This new camera/mp3 player feature though doesn't seem to be adding anything to the DS other than to potentialy make it bigger...

All this seems to be to me is a way for Nintendo to fight back against the new iPhone which could potentialy steal away some of the DS's casual fanbase.

Edit-Although if that portable VC rumor turns out to be true I will gladly eat all my words about this new DS design.

This may possibly make me eat my words about the new DS.
It all depends on how the DS ware turns out...

Scratch that, looks like the camera's resolution is significantly smaller than 3.0, unless reports are coming in wrong.

Hm. I suspect the bigger screens are just there for a bigger picture in general, seeing that it is only an update of the DS. I'm not too fond of the cameras. What's the point? No GBA slot? Guess I'll keep my current Lite around to continue rocking out with Guitar Hero. =P

Honestly, the only enticing feature I see is the downloadable content, and it remains to be seen whether that will be worthwhile at all. Color me not so excited.

Why couldn't they simply have kept it a strict gaming device? I hate jack-of-all-trades. Too often they prove to be master of none. ...

You're right Pegasus, the bigger screens just allow for an enlarged picture (at least judging from the vids on Nintendo's site). I've heard that both screens are touchscreens, now, but I don't know how that'll be implemented unless new games come out that only work on the DSi.

I have a feeling the camera is only going to be useful for noodling around in the built-in photo editor and on the Wii's Photo Channel. Lame.

You're right, the only interesting thing is the downloadable content, and that could very easily suck. That'll be what makes or breaks this as a purchase for me, anyway.

At the very least the DSiWare stuff will be free, and at most 800 NinPoints (No longer WiiPoints).

Another thing, I still have the regular DS (Calling it Phat is just silly :P), I don't have a camera (I don't care if the megapixels are small, I want a FREAKING camera), and I wouldn't mind stuffing it with some songs on the SD card. But, there are some questions, if answered, can make me go get this big upgrade.

1. Can I play VC games (I don't mind not having N64 games)?
2. Is this going to be the next-gen DS, or can I not worry about a new version in three years after purchase.

If both are true: day-one purchase.

This is definitely not the next-gen DS. I believe Iwata said that this is a "third pillar" not meant to replace the current DS, just expand its market. The next-gen Nintendo portable is still over the horizon.

Now that ain't a good thing, for me (or everyone else that is skeptical). All the added features are nice, but if I did buy a DSi then watch they announce the true DS2 in a year or two (with the same features including a few more to boot); I won't be a happy camper.

I've been looking at the official site:
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ds/dsi.html

On the size-comparison page with the DS Lite, the DSi (as they're calling it) looks slightly bigger overall than the DS Lite to accomodate for the larger screens.

Also on the page where they talk about the music player, I can't read the Japanese but they mention AAC (an audio format which is the only supported type now on the latest Wii photo channel). It would be really, really stupid of them to only support AAC in this but it looks like it might be the case.

Another design flaw I've noticed is the camera lens on the outer case, which I imagine would get scratched.

So it looks like these new features all have flaws, the only thing left is the speculated virtual console service, let's hope that's good.

The only reason I would buy this is if it had downloadable GameBoy games, otherwise I'm still fine playing with my DS Phat.

It doesn't look so bad actually but I would also like it to play GBA GameBoy and others but I might just use it as a phone sell my wii fit and DS Lite and get this greatest investment I'll ever make next year

Actually, the DSi is 12% smaller than the DS Lite. The screens, meanwhile, are 3.25" rather than 3".

The more I think about it, the more I think this new DS model upgrade is simply meant to be a children's toy. Iwata said he wanted to expand the DS's market, and that new market is young kids.

Think about it: it's smaller (even the DS Lite is quite small for teenage+ sized hands), it has very low quality game-like camera and mp3 player with toy functionality (basic editing), and it removes the retro game port (kids don't want to play old games). Everyone else already has a digital camera or a cell phone that can do most of this new stuff way better.

They should have called it the 4-kiDS.

Actually, the DSi is 12% smaller than the DS Lite. The screens, meanwhile, are 3.25" rather than 3".
Looking at it again it's definitely thinner but longer and wider, probably smaller overall. I'm sure they wouldn't not draw it to scale to make it look bigger.

That's making sense, but let's hope it's not true. Removing the GBA slot can also be a sign of a portable VC.

If it's not meant to be for kids, then I'll definitely get it. I still have the first version of the DS and was planning to buy a DSLite, but now I'm going to wait for this.
