Since it'll be a good long while until it even shows up in the West I kind of hope it'll fail in Japan. Seriously, I'm not interested in a hodge-podge device with unnecessary features. It would take a great deal for me to abandon my DS Lite because of it.

I agree with you completely; however, there's no way this will fail in Japan. The Japanese eat up anything to do with the DS.

I just hope that the real next-gen portable is ready to be announced by the time this 4-kiDS comes out in the West, so we can justify waiting a bit longer.

I'm trading my lite in fo this. If there was a solid release date, I'd go sell my DS lite right now and get more moneyfor it.

But I don't have a Mp3, Camera, or a cll phone, so this is nice. I'v also wanted to get the DS browser lately, so I'll just wait for he DSi and get it with the better browser. And It might be a rumour, but I did hear about some DSi launch titles, so it most likely will have it's own games.

The only think i don't like about the DSi is that the cover looks dull, and there's no GBA slot. ( I don't ply GBA Games, but still, this means no guitar hero.)

I don't really understand why people are literally crying about this:
"NO GBA SLOT OMG I HATEZ NINTENDO WAHWAHWAHWAHWAHWAHWAHWAHWAHWAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !"

Just play it on a GBA, SP, micro, DS, or Lite.

As for me, I was sold by bigger screens, better speakers, DS Shop Channel... As you can tell, I'm aiming on buying it day one.

I take it you won't cry when Nintendo releases their actual next-gen portable (with all better features) one year after you spend $200 on your DSi?

So you're telling me by getting this, my paddle controller would be a $40 paper weight and I can't get even get my Emerald and Fire Red pokemon (when I finally "man up" and finish Pearl)?

How's that an improvement?

Yeah, this is the one reason I am sketchy with buying the DSi.

To make use of Nintendo DSi Sound, you will need to store sound data on an SD card on the AAC format.
That confirms my fears about the file format. I could almost (but not quite) understand if they didn't want to pay the licence for MP3's, but to leave out formats like Vorbis, which are free, it's as if they deliberately want to reduce functionality and make the device less user friendly. I don't really care about audio playback, I probably wouldn't use it much anyway, but this puts me off the thing in general.

AAC is tighter quality compression. Better sound at smaller file sizes. I don't see why everyone has a problem with it other than audiophiles who want to listen to full quality uncompressed music, and I don't see why those people would be listening to music on a kids' toy like the DSi in the first place.

Not compared to Vorbis.

Most people like to be given the choice and hardly anyone has all their music in AAC and therefore will have to convert it. Because, as you say, the feature is aimed at the casual market this puts up a barrier and most people just won't bother, that's a bigger issue than the quality. It would have cost them nothing to support other free formats.

No, you're right, and I totally agree with you about Vorbis. I'm mainly talking about the people who want/know mp3 and only mp3.

Although I would venture to say that a lot of casuals have a lot of their music in AAC format, considering how popular iTunes is. A lot of people would have downloaded tracks from the iTunes store in AAC format or else ripped their own CDs in iTunes rather than a real CD ripping suite. So it's not as though no one will be able to figure out how to use it.

This is just further proof that the DSi is only meant to attract kids and the iPhone crowd.

...

Ok, so nobody's heard of it, but I like it. (and it's half the size of mp3....)

...really? I can't say I know anything about the technology, how you design a machine to play different formats and what that would cost in labor. But I'm pretty sure if it cost nothing, they would have done it.

It's only down to the software and what codecs are included, the cost must be minimal especially compared to the other costs of designing a new product. Dedicated media players that cost a fraction of the cost of the DSi support a wide range of formats. Who knows, maybe it's somehow in Nintendo's interest to promote AAC, or maybe they see open source (like Vorbis) as a threat?

I can definitely see the former. Some company has a vested interest in the promotion of the AAC format, promises to scratch Nintendo's back if they scratch theirs and--bam--the DSi is AAC only.

Kinda like how some restaurants get a sort of kickback from Coca-Cola/PepsiCo for serving only Coca-Cola/PepsiCo drinks, and nothing from their main competitor, PepsiCo/Coca-Cola. Only, you know. Totally different.

Related image is related.

I believe what this "mystery company" has to offer is permission to use the lower-case-i...

Soon, Nintendo will get access to the lower case D and S, and then the DS will be smaller than ever!

I only made the Apple comment since AAC is Apple's championed music format.

I wouldn't mind the new NDSi I just hope it comes with a messenging service and the AAC music format is cool but you can't find the file format anywhere except on ITunes. But still at least it looks better than the old fashioned PSP (was that lame).

Here's some more things about the DSi that need to be said but haven't been said:

There will be exclusive DSi sofware that won't run on the DS Lite. I'm unable to find out whether this is just referring to the downloadable software or that there will be actual boxed games that will only be compatible with the DSi, hopefully its not the latter.

Either way, this exclusive DSi software is region locked, so if there's a game that Nintendo decides your region doesn't deserve your only option is to import one.
http://www.dsfanboy.com/2008/10/06/n...region-locked/

The battery life is a bit shorter; 3-4 hours on highest brightness (5-8 hours for DS Lite), 9-14 hours on lowest brightness (15-19 hours for DS Lite).
http://kotaku.com/5057883/lets-compa...te-and-the-dsi

As we know there are two cameras; the internal camera is 300,000 pixels and, in brighter news, the external camera is 3 megapixels.

With all these problems I don't think even VC can make the DSi a good thing now.

From the sounds of the region locking, it may be that the exclusive stuff is the downloadable software, since they like to police that stuff. Precedent shows that they're not so fussy with retail games' regions, though that could easily change.

I do think that exclusive retail titles are likely, and may take advantage of the camera in "interesting" (gimmicky) ways. Whether or not this kind of stuff would be region locked remains to be seen?

The camera probably won't be much cop in EU and NA. That would be funny if that came true. The DSi however does look quite good. However.

D'aww, it's so cyuuute. ::pinches its little cheeks::

The camera's photos do look good...on the DSi. I wonder if they look decent when transferred to the Wii or computer?

Maybe okay on the Wii, but certainly craptastic on a comp, given the low resolution it has to work with.

All I've heard so far about how the DSi pictures look on the PC is terrible. Unless you have a 256 by 192 monitor of course.
