Default Ace Attorney Central

I'm a big fan of the Ace Attorney games and figured that we could use some sort of discussion topic for all the Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice, and Miles Edgeworth stuff we have to talk about......so here we go! This could be a great spot to talk about the differences between the various ports of the games, Gyakuten Saiban 5 and the possibility of Phoenix being in one of Capcom's Vs. titles.

THE GAMES:
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice For All

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations

Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice

Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth

Ace Attorney Investigations 2

Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright
Promotional Art

Wow....I can only have 4 pics? Lame. Well, let me know if any of the 4 pictures aren't showing up.

I've beaten the first four Phoenix Wright games,
soon I'll get to part 5, Miles Edgeworth's Investigations.

My favourites are Phoenix Wright 1 and Apollo Justice,
but you just can't divide them... you have to play them all in order.

And... well.. right now I'm beating them all again on WiiWare.
The port isn't the best but for the price it's undeniably awesome content plus all your family and friends can puzzle with you on a big tv screen.

I really like the character development, story progression from one game to the next, the dialogue (especially Phoenix' funny thinking), the courtroom action and the heroic soundtrack... and it's nice that with each game more gameplay elements are added.

I would have bought Tatsunoko vs Capcom if Phoenix Wright was in there.

What else... hmm.... yes, the 4 picture limit per post is an insult
to all picture spammers.

I just think it would be good to have a higher picture limit for posters with x amount of posts or around for x amount of time.

Many people will disagree with me, but JFA > T&T > AJ > AA > AAI IMO.

They are all excellent games and I like them almost all equally, but for some reason I enjoyed Justice For All the most. Maybe it's because I thought 2-2 is the best case I've ever played or maybe it's because I thought that it had the best set of characters in it.

I've only ever played Justice for all...or whatever its called...on DS and didn't really care for it that much which was odd as I generally like point and clickers.

I prefer something like Deja-Vu 1 & 2 on the GBC for my portable detective adventuring.

BIG NEWS!!
Gyakuten Kenji 2 (or Ace Attorney Investigations 2) has been recently announced!
Early blurry pic here

I'd have really preferred an Apollo Justice 2 since AAI is probably my least favorite AA game, but this is way better than nothing.

Well, perhaps this is the series's goodbye to the DS. Maybe AA5/AJ2 will be a 3DS title?

I really should play Miles Edgeworth's first game - NOW that I have to send in my Wii to repair to play Metroid Other M and found a working DS lite (white) on the street. This should be the perfect time to get around playing it.

Didn't fancy handing it to the police as lost property?...some poor kid is probably crying into their pillow over your actions you heartless Arschgesicht!

And seriously, who is it that's going around dumping videogame machines everywhere of late, first my GC, then Kawaii's C64 now you with a DS...is it the same person who hides all those chicken legs inside of barrels and behind candlesticks?

Now that you mention it you deserve several more free DS's for your unfortunate SNES related loss...although maybe you returning the DS was a test that might have led to the return, through some bizarre karmic reward system of the suitcase your brother misplaced all those years ago; the affenschwanz!

I only started playing ace attorney at the end of last year. Ive never been a fan of these sorts of games but I saw the first game for 10 pounds when I went back to the UK Last year and decided to give it a try. And I loved it. The following month we went back to the UK again and I bought the other games in the series too lol.

But yeah I love the series now. Its one of my favourites. The script is fantastic (Despite the occasional typo), the characters unique and interesting, the animations are hilarious and the sound effects and music just fit the game perfect. Everything is spot on. I just finished Apollo Justice last week and im going to be starting Investigations next week.

I enjoyed all of the games but my order of favourites would go :
T&T
JFA
PW
AJ

T&T was just awesome. Godot was great, the final case was great and everything leading up to it was aswell. The second case was kind of...meh...but it did have a nice twist and was still fun.
JFA Just had an incredible last case and the second case was great too even though it got incredibly weird.
The original was great too but I wasnt too interested in the turnabout samurai case and felt the DS Exclusive case dragged on a bit.
AJ Was good but I felt it to be the weakest in the series. I felt the stories were a bit weaker and all the other games did have an incredible final case where-as this one was just alright. I found the ending to be a bit disappointing too and thought the DS features werent used enough. Your just shown them and then never use them ever again.

Despite anything negative I may say about the games though I still think there all fantastic games and not far apart from each other in terms of the quality of the stories and characters and such. Im looking forward to playing AAI. Glad the second game was announced too. Anything to keep the series alive will make me happy.

There's an interesting article on The Escapist about the context behind the series and Japan's legal system.

The Escapist : Phoenix Wright's Objection!

Sucked up the information. Great read.

Especially with no jury system in Japan every suspect is hanging on the skills of an attorney - and as the article stated - most attorneys don't win a single court in all their lifetime.

It's like the old Samurai and Kung Fu movies. What? Someone thinks you are a suspect? Then we should better just kill you, get rid of you, arrest you - in case you really are. There seems to be just no "innocent until you are proven guilty".
How is it possible to maintain so many prison(er)s anyway?

But glad to finally see things changing for the better over there with Japan now adding a jury to their courtroom.

Also, new thought: if there is a Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright, could we see a Phoenix Wright Vs. Professor Layton???? ...actually, I don't think so, but it's a possibility given the Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Street Fighter thing going on.

EDIT: And some more (possibly mistranslated) info:
"The one in charge of the scenario and plot for this project is Takumi Shuu of Capcom. The subtitle released for this game is "This time, the puzzles are filled with contradictions!"

Archaeologist Hershel Layton and Defense Attorney Phoenix Wright are lost in a 'different world'... In a mixture of reality and fantasy, the medieval city "Labyrinth City". A mysterious town... where the "witch" concealed in darkness and "magic" exists in reality. "Magic" and "story"... An encounter in a town coloured by fantasy, with unbelievable cases. The one who rules this town is the ultimate criminal "Storyteller". The "stories" that he spins out with his pen become reality, and determine the future... Puzzles never seen before stand in the way of Professor Layton. And this time, the client of Phoenix Wright is under suspicion of... "witchcraft". Not everything can be explained with common sense in the court of this world... That is, the "Witch Trials"... The gavel that announces that court now rings in Labyrinth City! This time, the puzzles are filled with contradictions!"

Not Japan only, they just haven't confirmed a release for the west yet. By the way, Level 5 has a say in this too.

Man, this would be like a day one purchase, even for the overpriced 3DS. Where's their head at? It'll be a while before homebrew for the 3DS allows region free playing and on top of that, a fan translation is miles away.

Wow, just from that trailer I can already see that the use of 3D will be overly gimmicky and annoying. That didn't take long.

Seriously? I think you're overreacting. I didn't even think about that until you just said that. Then again, I've never had a problem with this whole 3D fad, it is typically subtle unless in a kid's film and I feel it can add a cool layer of depth to films. Remember, movies did that zooming through thing (if I know what you're talking about) before 3D, it was simply showing off surround sound rather than 3D visual effects.

Besides, it'll probably just be in a couple animation sequences involving large objects and some in-game graphics (of which I have no idea yet since no gameplay has been shown).

I don't.

Your point about in-game graphics is fine if it's just used to orient sprites in space, but it's going to be abundantly overused in animated sequences / cutscenes. That trailer features several "reach out and grab you!!!" scenes where the 3D is obviously going to be dangled in front of the player in a sad kind of "look wut I can do!!!" tech showoff that we see all too often in low-budget 3D films.

Maybe it will make things feel gimmicky with the 3D on. But, I think with the 3D turned off, it doesn't ruin the experience in any way, especially since I had no problem with this trailer.

It'll be fine with the 3D turned off. And obviously I don't magically see 3D in the trailer. But anyone with half a brain can pinpoint the scenes that are specifically designed to showcase the 3D when it's on.

The game itself looks fine.

Quick question, am I right in thinking the Wiiware versions of the games have 3 save slots? I ask because I'm considering gifting the first game to a friend who uses his brother's Wii. (Before you ask, he has no intention of buying a DS...)

Huh, I didn't think so, but upon a quick Google search, it appears you are right. Go figure, these ports are actually superior in some way.

If any game is going to have an overly dramatic and superfluous use of 3D, it might as well be Layton+PW. PW isn't exactly the most serious of games by itself, but with the crossover, the melodrama can only be heightened with a self-aware use of OMG3D! techniques.

The use of bad techniques or trite conventions are used to such effect in video often. See The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra for an extreme (and awesome) example.

Seems Ace Attorney Investigations 2 won't see a release outside of Japan due to the cost of localizing it which won't match the profits. :/

Oh well, maybe a 3DSWare port is possible, and if it's too big, release it in episodes like the Wiiware versions. At least that would save some money, right?

Oh well, maybe a 3DSWare port is possible, and if it's too big, release it in episodes like the Wiiware versions. At least that would save some money, right?
Even though it doesn't have much of a chance of doing much, here is a petition to sign regarding AAI2's release at all: North American Release of Ace Attorney Investigations 2 Petition

I hope against my better judgment that this is a publicity stunt similar to what Capcom has done before, but we'll see. This news isn't totally devastating since AAI was the weakest of the series, but I would still love to get my Ace Attorney fix with a new entry.

Phoenix Wright movie seems highly likely! Phoenix Wright headed for big screen? - News at GameSpot

I just wonder if it'll be animated or live action? Hopefully it's the former since I just can't see a very effective live action one being made.

More accurately, it won't see a DS localization. We didn't see Gyakuten Saiban as a GBA game, either...only on DS, WiiWare, and iOS.

I think it may be a publicity stunt, as Tides suspects. They have done something similar with Layton v. Phoenix Wright on their blog (a "post here if you want to see this game in English HURR!")

Anyone know if Gyakuten Kenji 2 is playable in English like many of the other Japanese versions of the Ace Attorney series?

No, it isn't. Only the first three Gyakuten Saiban DS games had that feature since they were planned for English release and it was considered a bit of a "special edition" anyway.

All of which will be very useful for a video game based on the Japanese legal system.

I suspect spam.
