Default News: DSi XL

I apologise if someone has made a thread about this before.

Nintendo has made an even new DS upgrade again, this however is just a size up, a 93% larger than a DS Lite size up.
Read the full info here:
http://kotaku.com/5392865/dsi-xl-com...-in-early-2010

I myself have not yet bought a Nintendo DSi, I was actually just starting to think about it.
I just might buy this.

Why would you want an even bigger portable system? If anything, seeing this huge clunky thing should only persuade more people to buy the smaller iteration.

The resolution on the screens hasn't changed at all. They've just stretched the screens. It's like those phones with huge numbers. DSi for senior citizens.

According to Iwata, it's to enable people to see what you are playing and also let people join in the game play. It's basically another game play style. Each to their own I suposse.

I'll pass on this though. I am very happy with my DS Lite at the moment, and I would rather upgrade to a DSI Lite, than this. I prefer my handheld consoles slimmer. Although the preloaded DSI applications are an interesting idea, and if Nintendo did something like that similar with the DSi Lite, then I might consider getting one.

I know that I never put my handhelds in my pocket, even at their current size, they're too bulgy for my tastes. This new DSi XL would be pretty cool for people like me who only play their handheld at home or put it in a separate carrying case. It's also good for those who are older and have bad eyes. I know my mom doesn't play her DS Lite because she doesn't like the small screens.

A fair point, I guess. If you have friends who want to watch over your shoulder as you play a DS game, maybe the larger system is for you.

I'm the kind of guy who'd rather play a GBA game on a GB Micro than on the DS, because the smaller screen gives a sharper image, so you can imagine that I wouldn't want the image of a DS game bloated even more by this larger XL screen.

Hmm...interesting. I'm the kind of guy who likes the GBA player for Gamecube and prefers the original DS to DSi because it's fatter. My hands aren't all that huge but I guess they're big enough to bother me with small handhelds like the Mirco.

The size of the system itself is a totally different story. I'm talking about the size of the screen. DS games are already stretched up to fill the DSi screen (since the resolution is the same). That effect is going to get even more noticeable on the DSiXL. Give me a tiny screen any day!

That said, while the GBM is very small, I find the button layout a lot more comfortable than the DS, especially the shoulder buttons. I couldn't play Zero Mission on the DS because of those shoulder buttons.

I got used to it, I also played Zero Mission on my Gameboy Player.

Talking about that, Nintendo really should add a GBA slot, to this DSi XL, that would make it more worth it, I suppose.

If they added a GBA slot and allowed users to transfer previously downloaded DSiWare games, then I would maybe begin to consider trading up.

Unfortunately, it's already a finished product, so that's not going to happen.

Couldn't they just have skipped the DSi and gone directly for this one, four version of the same console is far too much, it's pretty much a middle finger to everyone that already have bought the console.

I still think the DS Lite is the best version due to the GBA slot, the non-existant camera and on top of that being completely region free. Must say I like the first version of the GBA the most of all the portable consoles though, that one's truly fantastic.

The hinge recently broke on my DS. It's still hanging in there but if I upgrade I'll probably just get a DSlite.

Dsi doesn't interest me with its downloadable content and poor camera but the removal of the GBA slot is the real killer for me. Metroid Prime Pinball without the rumble pak? No thanks Ninty.

Incidently didn't Nintendo claim that the GBA cart was removed from DSI because of the shape of the machine?
Funny how its also not in a bigger version then.

Meh, it didn't have a backlight...which is a VERY VERY necessary feature for all handhelds (at least the post GBC ones), so I am kinda disagree (not saying it's a design flaw, rather that lack of it keeps it from being my #1 handheld).

True, some backlight would improve it, but the redesigned GBA:SP that had backlight was unfortunately useless in any other way...maybe except the rechargeable battery.

I have still my 2 old fat DS silver and pink from 4 years ago working good. That's what's keeping me from getting a new one.

The DSi XL would be good for me, because I'm to cool to play games in public. I also love larger screens, always played GB games on the Super Game Boy and GBA games on the Game Boy Player.

They should keep going in that direction and release a DS laptop eventually.

I also liked the idea of Nintendo getting into mobile phone territory with their new DS. But that one should be small again.

What about the GBA Micro? Also, Japan got a GBA Original wiyh a backlight. Since it's region free, one could always import that.

The D-pad for the Gba isn't great though. The Sp had a much better one .

I prefer to actually find my GBA when I want to play it
Never liked the GBA Micro due to the same reasons as the DS is currently experiencing, it's not needed at all, you have the first version which I personally like the most and the SP which I think is an OK version of the GBA, I just didn't like the overall "tiny-ness" of the console because I was far too comfortable with the "buttons on each sides of the screen" setup that the first version had. But to speak the truth there isn't too much wrong with the GBA:SP.

The GBA Micro however was far too small, released as the third incarnation of the same console and also after the release date of the first Nintendo DS version, I know that the GBA still had some games released for it after the Nintendo DS but it was generally seen as a succeeded console by the Nintendo DS which was superior in every way plus a new console in itself, see it as if Sony would release a new version of the PS2 about now, the PS2 Slim is just perfect and another one wouldn't add anything to an already great console.

Plus, the Micro has a smaller screen which is a bit sharper, but I kind of like the pixelated look of the GBA so I'm completely happy with my first version
Looking back I don't even think that I ever saw the GBA Micro for sale in any store at all, no one simply cared enough to import more than a few units I presume.
Backlight would be nice though since my room currently holds no strong light sources :/

If this system can adjust the screen to original or even in more ways, this is a better buy than an original DSi I think. The only downer would be that it isnt portable enough for the 'smaller' pockets.

Still I think that its very irritating that Nintendo is doing it this way, as you also have seen that with Kirby SuperStar Ultra people buy something and a few months later there will be a better or cheaper solution.

Yeah, that would be a nice feature. No word on whether it can actually do that, though...

He's upset that EU just got Kirby Super Star Ultra (a DS game) and are apparently getting the SNES original on VC sometime in the future. He thinks that a downloadable retro game on a home console somehow makes an updated portable game obsolete, apparently.

Will the larger screen make for a worse picture quality considering it has the same resolution?

I was just thinking of buying a DSLite as well, due to the GBA slot.
I want to play The Minish Cap, never got around to finishing it, like most people for some strange reason...

Still I probably won't go with the DSLite, the downloadable content may turn out useful, if Nintendo would release some GB/GBC/GBA games on there store, like we are all expecting...

Though I have no problems at all writing information on the small screen, my sole reason for wanting a DSi XL is for the purpose of writing walkthroughs for GameFAQs.

The last one I've written was for Guadia Quest, a game part of the Retro Game Challenge for the DS. The bigger screen would definitely help me in this case. Aside from that, I really wouldn't need a DSi XL.

Well, got mine yesterday.

As anyone will tell you, its big. You expect that when you get it out the box, but when you open the thing up, you can't help but go "woah" at the screens, as they're quick large.

Had no troubles so far. I ve only played Pokemon Pearl and the DSiWare games on it (btw, you still get 1000 free points, though the promotion ends sometime this month) and they look fine, no problems with the graphics or display.

Thanks for the uptake, Lapras.

Personally I can't say I care one way or another. It just seems like something that'll appeal to a very specific demographic, and that is a good thing, and I'm happy for those who would want it, but for me the larger screens aren't that big a deal. I'm certainly not gonna sell the DS I already own just to buy it.

This is possibly the handheld I am going to get when the DS's are a bargain just like I bought the GBA SP years later on Ebay.
I dont mind the big screen in the first place and wasnt very fond of the DS Light. So I think it would be an obvious choice later on.

I always liked how Nintendo kept it simple all the time with the Wii while Sony and Microsoft released all the different version of their consoles, now Nintendo is doing the same thing, DSiXL and Wii2, it's all Apple's fault

1. There is no Wii2.

2. Original NES and top-loader NES, SNES and SNES Jr., heck Genesis and Genesis Mk2 and Mk3. Console revamps aren't exactly a new idea, and they're not exactly being spurred by Apple.

Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Light and all the various colours of each.

Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Advance SP, Gameboy Advance Micro, Gameboy Advance SP Gen 2

DS, DS lite, DSi, DSi XL

Besides it's hardly overly complex for PS3, after the 60gb edition the only thing that changed was the size of the HDD, then they released the slim which is a cosmetic change only.

You're a very weak person :P How much did you pay? £159.99 is absolutely ridiculous for a RRP

Companies do this for four main reasons.

1. If people are thinking about purchasing there console, they will upgrade it, to try and get people to want it more.

2. They know OCD nutcakes, like Lapras King and I, will buy the same console again, for there collection.

3. Some people are to stupid not to realize it's the same console, and think it's a completely new one, i.e the DSi is not the DS2, but looks like one.

4. There are spoiled children out there, that will get their parents to buy it for them, because they can.
