Why isn't there any place I can find button maps anymore for the classic games on the Wii? There used to be some in the Virtual Console section on Wikipedia, but not anymore. I just like to know what button does what so I can document that and make old SNES controllers (and possibly others) compatible with all non-analog games. I'm particularly interested in the GameCube controller, since the config is not listed anywhere, and I don't have a classic controller yet.
For the most part, the classic controller configuration is the same as the GameCube, with the obvious exception of the + being the GCN Start/Pause and the - being the Z button (except N64 of course, which has no - or Select button). However, this is not always the case, particularly with Genesis and Neo Geo. A few questions. Other than N64, are all systems controls universal for all games? Like on NES, is GameCube A ALWAYS NES A? Or might it change per game? Is Streets of Rage 3 the only six button Genesis game in the US on the VC currently? I don't have a classic controller, but I can see from the operations guide that the "Mode" button is set to Classic controller "ZR", while I assumed it would be "-". I can only assume that it would be also mapped to GameCube "Z", but I am not sure, since I don't think it has a function in this game. Likewise, this goes for the Neo Geo's "Select" button. It's mapped to Classic Controller "-", and I assume it's GCN's "Z", but again, I don't think "Select" has a function in Blue's Journey, my only Neo Geo game so far (besides MS Anthology, of course). I'm pretty sure Street Fighter II was the only six button TurboGrafx-16 game (am I right?) and we'll probably never get it, since it was Japan-only and we already have all of the SNES versions. Here is what I have so far (not counting N64, as it's on a per-game basis): Virtual Console- NES: NES:---------------------GameCube: B button-----------------B or Y button A button-----------------A or X button Select button------------Z button (- button- Classic) Start button-------------Start button (+ button- Classic) Virtual Console- SNES: SNES:--------------------GameCube: Y button------------------Y button B button------------------B button X button------------------X button A button------------------A button L button------------------L button R button------------------R button Select button-------------Z button (- button- Classic) Start button--------------Start button (+ button- Classic) Virtual Console- Genesis (3 button): Genesis:------------------GameCube: A button------------------B button (Y button- Classic) B button------------------A button (B button- Classic) C button------------------X button (A button- Classic) Start button--------------Start button (+ button- Classic) Virtual Console- Genesis (6 button): Genesis:------------------GameCube: X button------------------L button Y button------------------Y button (X button- Classic) Z button------------------R button Mode button--------------Z button (can anyone confirm this?) (ZR- Classic) Virtual Console- Neo Geo: Neo Geo:-----------------GameCube: A button-----------------B button B button-----------------A button C button-----------------X button (Y button- Classic) D button-----------------Y button (X button- Classic) Select button------------Z button (can anyone confirm this?) (- button- Classic) Start button-------------Start button (+ button- Classic) Virtual Console- TurboGrafx-16/ TG-16CD: TG-16:------------------GameCube: II button----------------B button I button-----------------A button II button Turbo----------Y button I button Turbo-----------X button Select button------------Z button (- button- Classic) Run button--------------Start button (+ button- Classic) Can anyone help me confirm all of this? (Especially the Z button on Neo Geo and 6 button Genesis) Do any games controls differ, again besides N64? Any 6 button Genesis games besides SoR3 on VC? Can you not just look up the buttons in the Operations Guide when you press 'HOME' on the controller?

I think he wants to mod old controllers to use them with the Wii. He would like to know if there's a standard setting so he could then physically make the correct wiring....or at least this is what I undertsood, I read his message several times before getting this conclusion.....

Yeah that's pretty much it. Also, the GameCube buttons are not shown on the Operations Guide. Only Wii remote and Classic Controller.

Yeah, that annoys me a little, since Nintendo put all that effort into making the Wii compatible with GC controllers, but a) fail to sell official ones anymore, and b) fail to include the button map in the VC Ops Guides.

What they should do is to make an option to see/change the button configuration for whatever controller is plugged in at the moment, instead of having some incomplete description in the manual itself.
By the way, judging by the first post it looks like 6-button MegaDrive games aren't Hori Fighting Stick-friendly... |
