21 september 1895

I've been browsing the comments of stories on many gaming news sites (well, it was all at IGN to be frank) and I have another bone to pick: 3rd party support.

Or to be exact, the many that complain about the apparent lack of it on Nintendo systems. They have a point. The fact that the Nint is having a great time with, let's see, 1st party titles such as Mario Kart, Skyward Sword, Mario 3D land etc. The naysayers say that's a bad sign as the Nint have to rely on those titles to be successful and that they need 3rd party support urgently.

FOR CRYING OUT LOUD PEOPLE! I hate 3rd party support. In fact, I wish the other console makers (SCEI, Microsoft Game Studios) make more 1st party titles for their own systems. In fact, relying on 3rd party too much and releasing little 1st party makes you look like you have no creativity (don't believe me? Look at the libraries of the Xbox Circle and PS the Third).

So to those who complain about the lack of 3rd party on Nint systems: go and see a mental specialist, because there is something wrong with your mind.

It's like when a new Smash Bros. is announced, everyone asks the question "Who will be in the new Mario Kart?" Now some people want to see characters from other franchises come to Mario Kart.

I'm sorry, but that is just wrong.

You see, Mario Kart isn't Smash Bros.. While the latter can have any character from any franchise join the roster, Mario Kart is strictly for Mario-related characters only. If other franchise characters join, then the name would have to be changed.

So all of you wishing for Link, Samus or Fox to join, forget it. It will simply not happen.

You know the fact that the conspiracy theorists say that the world will end in 2012? Turns out that might be true for Nintendo and its fans by looking at the current state that the big N is in.

A disaster that was the 3DS launch, the PS3 overtaking the Wii in sales, people preferring iPhones or Androids as a gaming platform and the Nint posting a financial loss of NEARLY a billion dollars equates to a grim future.

So because of this I'm going to play the blame game. First, I blame the arrogant PS360 owners badmouthing the Wii, because you gave material to the trolls (who I am going to blame next). Yes, I'm looking at you, internet trolls. You did more damage to the Nint than you intended. It's not all fun and games when something serious happens in reaction to something you do. I also blame Apple Inc. and Google for providing alternative platforms to the DS. A phone is for calling people, not for getting online and/or playing games.

Unless things turn out for the best, the above will get a lot of flak from me in the future.

The Resident Evil series is one of Capcom's most well known and cherished franchises originating from the PlayStation era. A series that has creepily stumbled right into the current generation...

The original Resident Evil, released in 1996, was one of the first games to get branded with the 'survival horror' term, though there were games that preceded it that could also be classed as survival horror games.
It introduced millions all over to the world of Raccoon City as well as to the evil Umbrella corporation and their deadly T-virus monsters.
Survival horror is a sub-genre of action but usually players will find themselves with certain limitations.
Examples of such limitations could be: A lack of ammo; health; or even inventory space. These limitations can effectively heighten the game's atmosphere and cause the player to re-consider the 'Go in guns blazing!' option you might pick in other action games.
If you only have one clip left and a whole corridor of a half-dozen rotting, flesh hungry zombies to navigate past; it's not ideal to kill every enemy you come across and to conserve ammunition.
Over the years Capcom released five main sequels (and a prequel) and a number of spin-offs to Resident Evil. The main series being Resident evil 0,1 2, 3, Code Veronica. All of these games followed a similar template to the original but in new settings with some new gameplay elements and various recurring characters with overlapping stories based on Umbrella.

The games would go on to sell millions of copies worldwide and get released on a plethora of platforms including: PS1, Saturn, N64, Gamecube, PS2, Wii, DS and PC. Ports of the original games for Xbox Live, PSN and Steam certainly wouldn't go amiss. Though we all still yearn for a true remake of Resident Evil 2.

Assumptions made in the compilation of this list:

A TWL code means a game is a DSi enhanced game cartridge (hereafter abbreviated as "TWL").

A game with boxart claiming special DSi features is a TWL game.

Gamers make mistakes in entering codes in databases, sometimes entering NTR for TWL games (GameFAQs) or TWL for an NTR game (ROM sites). When in doubt, the code seen on a scan of the boxart, game, or manual trumps what's written in a database.

Images scanned and uploaded into databases and on eBay are real and of legitimate items unless obviously faked. (When eBay is used as a reference, a link is given to the search rather than an individual auction.)
Other notes:

TWL games are region-locked when played on the DSi, DSi XL, or 3DS.

Some games above have no links. These are from the NintendoAge database. I was unable to find support for their claim that the game is TWL other than ROM sites, which we aren't supposed to link here. NintendoAge did have at least one erroneously marked game, though, so not all of these may be TWL.

A few European titles, such as Youda Farmer, are marked "DSi compatible" (in English or various other languages). Does this actually mean they are TWL games? NTR games are also DSi compatible, after all. (23 Oct 11 -- I have now spotted a multiregional game that is advertised as DSi enhanced on its packaging in one region and DSi compatible on its packaging elsewhere.)

Ahh the redesign. Mainly used to address fixed problems of the original or just to give a facelift (or both). To keep in relation in video games, almost all the well known consoles and handhelds have had a redesigned model during their lives.

To me that's fine. However, even if the redesign is superior to the original, to me the original will be the better one.

Why? It is one of the unwritten laws of the universe that an update will lose some portion of the original's charm and character. For instance, take the SEGA Mega Drive (another thing about me is that I like to use the Majority name of the system, and "Mega Drive" was used in more countries than "Genesis"). The original was a blast (no pun intended). Although it had no stereo A/V output and it had a lager footprint, the case just looked magnificent and it had a headphone port (and that's cool). Then enter the Mega Drive II. It was smaller, it had red buttons and it had stereo A/V. But there is something that still bugs me about this redesign: it just doesn't look as good as the original. And it doesn't feel like the original either. So if I had a choice, I would pick the original Mega Drive.

For another example, take the Game Boy Advance. Yeah, the original was bashed around for not having a lit screen and not using a proper rechargeable battery, but it was comfortable to hold. Then the SP came around with those problems fixed. But even with those features I still prefer the original GBA. Feels better and has a headphone port unlike the SP. It isn't like a screen light is going to make the games play any better, they play the same on both systems. So my verdict: GBA > SP.

The pattern continues. DS > lite (you can play in bright environments as well as dark). Master System > MS2 (card slot). PlayStation > PSOne (serial port).

So while you go and buy your shiny new stuff I'll be fine with what you call "inferior junk" because the truth is they're fantastic.

What a horrible vortex of **** that gaming is in these days.

I've been starting to think about skipping the next gen. Sure, the current gen probably has a year more to it, but things are already not looking good. The industry's crazy obsession with overpriced DLC & digital distribution for starters. What happens if the servers for XBLA, PSN, & Wii Shop are shut down? There's a chance that the stuff in those online stores could be gone forever. It has happened when the original XBL was shut down a year ago & thus, made getting the DLC for the Xbox 1 games impossible. It might happen again.

There's also Nintendo's spotty localization record which hasn't improved (maybe worsened) since the last gen. The only companies I could think of that have a worse record could be Namco Bandai & maybe SNK Playmore. Nintendo even region-locked the 3DS, something they hadn't done with DS.

I can't even forget about the hype I had for the Wii. It was surely a rarity: An old-school styled console (in terms of games like Wii Sports, NSMB Wii, DKCR, etc) with modern (well, maybe not) specs. The Wii had so much potential, yet a lot of it was gone in favor of Gamecube-like games such as Metroid: Other M which strays as far from the older games as possible in terms of quality & story. There's also LOZ: Skyward Sword, another mediocre post-OOT Zelda game, puzzles & all. I' am quite baffled at how Super Mario Galaxy got a sequel, yet NSMB Wii doesn't get one even though the latter as well as it's DS predecessor sold way more than Galaxy. By "gamecube-like", I mean that the games are similar to the gamecube iterations in terms of quality since many of them aren't very good (except for Metroid Prime 1 & 2.)

A lot of game series are simply suffering in the current gen. Metroid: Other M is a perfect example along with Castlevania: Lords of Shadows, the latter which comes off as a God of War clone while the former strays as far from traditional Metroid characteristics as possible. There's also Final Fantasy XIII which is a perfect example of style over substance. The Zelda series these days is basically a far cry from the older games, being not much more than a puzzle-fest where as the older games feel more like an actual adventure.

The 3DS & Wii U are pretty much going to be far cries from their predecessors. The only reason I can think of that Nintendo has placed 3D into their newest handheld is because they seem so obsessed with it. The Virtual Boy, although failed, didn't stop their plans of trying to get 3D to be a mainstay of gaming (however hard & ridiculous that plan might be.) Honestly, it'll take more than a weird 2.5-3D Mario game (3D Mario doesn't sell systems as well as 2D Mario) & some ports to sell the system. Has there ever been a time in which ports or a 3D Mario has got system sales to skyrocket? Sure, the 3DS might be in a slightly better shape next year, but it'll still sell far less than the DS did.

This was my first time playing this game.

Okay, things are looking good for the 3DS over the horizon as a new Mario adventure and a new Mario Kart are on the way. Good huh? Well, yes, but I'm not sure how far they go with the current names they possess. In fact, they might make things worse for the 3DS as is.

What are the current names? Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.

Could the Nint think of more boring and rubbish names for their could be saviours for the 3DS? I mean, come on. These couldn't be the final names, they obviously have to change them. Perhaps something along the lines of Super Mario 3D and Mario Kart 3D. Super Mario 3D Land sounds like a kid was in charge of naming duties, and Mario Kart 7 just sounds similar to Windows 7 (also a rubbish name, fact).

So Nintendo, change the names before launch or fall SEGA-wards.

Remember September 2010 when Nintendo announced a new Virtual Console service for the Nintendo 3DS system that features past portable game systems?
...

Remember September 2010 when Nintendo announced a new Virtual Console service for the Nintendo 3DS system that features past portable game systems?

Fast forward to right now: The 3DS VC is available now (since the opening of the Nintendo eShop) and we already seen some great classics released on the service. Gameplay has mostly been untouched, except for certain things, which is why I brought this blog discussion up.

Special Virtual Console Features Not Included in Original Releases:

Ability to view the original resolution of the classic games and the 3DS default resolution for VC games

Ability to change the black and white display to its original form and vice-versa

Ability to make suspend and restore point saves.

However, functions listed below currently are not supported at this time. That's where I ask the question: How can this problem be solved by improving the issue?

Non-Functional features and Recommended Improvements:

Multiplayer featured in original GB/GBC versions are non-functional in the Virtual Console version - Develop a special function that allows users to play multiplayer using the local wireless features. It's a pain playing those games single-player only.

Certain games that features the Game Boy Printer to print pictures are not supported in the VC version. - Make an enhancement to games like; The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and other titles that originally supported the GBP by saving the pictures to the SD Card and print them at a store or on the PC.

Let's hope Nintendo are aware of the public's complaints and improves the service to consumer feedback.

I recently had a cold, which meant that I spent a few days at home. During that time, I recently discovered that I wasn't the only person in the world who still used a Wii (or maybe those people read my entry on how to make the Wii hardcore), as there were lots of people on Mario Kart Wii (I also played Mario Kart DS online but there was hardly anyone online).

I enjoyed it. Usually I get nowhere in an online race but I actually won a couple of times and only came last once. That said, I also made a couple of rivals during races and ruined a party (seriously, there was this group of Miis and Funky Kong and I, playing as Toad, kinda ruined it by winning the first race. Then the other players disconnected from me). I don't think that any other game uses the Wi-Fi Connection so effectively and flawlessly as Mario Kart Wii.

As for DS, it had a rather sad feeling to it. I hardly won any races on it (I didn't know if the others were snaking or not, they just jump around the track). For me, Wi-Fi on Mario Kart DS was just a horrible experience.

So anyway, if you want to find out another reason to still use your Wii, put in Mario Kart and go online.

How to make your Wii hardcore

A lot of people, after they get a 360 or PS3, start to neglect their Wii and let it collect dust. I, however, never got the other two systems and made the most of my Wii (I think I'm the only person in the world who still uses one). To stop me from getting lonely, I will share you my process on how to make your little unloved white box a hardcore system.

1. Get out your Wii and dust it off.
2. Neglect the motion controls and buy a couple of classic controllers (one for each Wiimote).
3. Download some good VC games and good WiiWare games (yes, good WW games exist).
4. If you got your Wii before Nov 09, then download the internet channel.
5. Avoid shovelware and buy games you actually want to play.
6. Download the Nintendo Channel.
7. Take the GC interface covers off and permanently have a GC memory card in slot 1.
8. Insert an SD card and leave in in there.
9. Break your big screen TV and connect the Wii to a smaller one. Doing so makes games like Wii Sports almost impossible to play (you really want to play those kinds of games?).
10. Sit back and admire your act of kindness you gave to your Wii.

*** This information is drawn almost exclusively from Nintendo's HANDHELD library. Also, I've examined the GB, VB, and DS libraries more closely than the others.
=================================

Nintendo labels their cartridges, manuals, and packaging with identification numbers. RF Generation, another game site I go to, keeps track of these numbers (calling them part numbers), so I've been idly noting them over time. They follow a certain pattern.

FORMAT:
The format of the part numbers looks something like this:

On a game cartridge:

XXX-YY-ZZZ

XXX-YYYY-ZZZ

XXX-YY-ZZZ-#

XXX-YYYY-ZZZ-#

XXX-YYY

LNA-CTR-YYYY-ZZZ (3DS only)

On a manual:

XXX-YY-ZZZ

XXX-YYYY-ZZZ

XXX-YYY

MAA-CTR-YYYY-ZZZ (3DS only)

On a box:

XXX P YY

XXX P YYYY

XXX P YYYY (and then below it) XXX-YYYY-ZZZ

CTR P YYYY ZZZ (3DS only)

WHAT IT MEANS:

PLATFORM CODE: the XXX

indicates the platform

GAME CODE: the YY, YYY, or YYYY

seems to indicate the game; changes only slightly between regions (note to self: why? investigate further)

REGION CODE: the ZZZ

tells us what region the game, manual, packaging, or other material was produced in and/or for

Region indicators are 3 character codes (or, in at least one case, a 4 character code) that indicates the region a game was produced in and/or is native to. They seem to indicate countries, but while the meaning of -USA and -EUR may seem obvious, keep in mind that -USA games routinely appear in Canada, as do -EUR games in Australia. I am grouping region indicators by continent.

Africa: none known

Asia: -ASI, -CHN, -HKG, -JPN, -KOR

Australia: -AUS (-EUR and -UKV DS cards appear here often in AUS packaging)

Europe:-EEC, -EIG, -EIP, -ESP, -EUB, -EUR, -EUU, -FAH, -FHG, -FHUG, -FRA, -FRG, -GER, -HAU, -HOL, -ITA, -NOE, -SCN, -SFD, -SWD, -SWE, -UK4, -UKV

North America: -CAN, -USA

South America: none known (What is the Brazilian region code?)

I think I have a gift (or handicap, depending on how you view it). That is that I don't notice the difference between the graphics of (some of) the 5th, 6th and 7th gen consoles.

I think its a gift. It allows me to forget the graphics and base my opinion on a game just by controls, feel and context. Unfortunately, most other people don't have this and so base their opinions on wether the graphics are great or not.

This is mainly why there is a lot of Wii bashing: people seem to only care about the graphics. But I think the Wii's graphics are on par with the 360's and PS3's (the only difference is that Wii doesn't have HDMI, which doesn't make that much difference). So are the Gamecube's, Dreamcast's, PS2's, Xbox's and N64's.

I am writing this because I am tired of people making assumptions based only on graphics. This has been said many times, but I am going t osay this: Good graphics don't always make a great game.

Why I dislike the PlayStation 2

I recently got questioned as to why I absolutely HATE what others think is the best console ever made. I am, of course, talking about the Nintendo Entertainment System.....whoops, wrong entry............................................. ....
I mean the PlayStation 2 (I still dislike both though).

Why you may ask? Well call me a console purist, but SCEI just went too far with their total domination of the console market, i.e the PlayStation brand. They of course succeeded with the PS1 (if you say PSX to me I think you're talking about that Japan-only DVR/PS2). However, instead of feeling satisfied with their success and calling it a day, they deciced to continue their reign, killing SEGA and making Nintendo an endangered species (they still survived with the GBA).

Granted, there are some PS2 games that I like the look of (GT4 and RPG maker to name a few) but most of its library is 3rd-rate tat (a price to pay for being the popular one). Compare its library to the Xbox's, the Gamecube's and the Dreamcast's (although the Xbox has got a fair ammount of rubbish in its library). They are basically awash with great games that are worth playing (like Jet Set Radio or Luigi's Mansion or Halo).

To top that off, the PS2 breaks easily. Drop it or drop something on it (like an Xbox) and it's bye bye PS2.

Now to open the floodgates of angry comments that will likely appear.

Zelda timeline theory: two Links

Okay, time to post to this blog again.

For the winter holidays (June, July and August are winter months for me) I hired out two games from the local Video Ezy (look, no Blockbuster). One of those games was Zelda:Twilight Princess. That got me thinking of my theory of the timeline of the series.

We all know that Zelda II happens after the origional Zelda, and we all know that Link to the Past and Ocarina occur before Zelda I. I'm not going to focus on the mess that is the earlier part of the timeline and instead focus on the latter part, the part after Zelda II.

In Twilight Princess, Link is right handed (the Cube version doesn't exist, IT'S FAKE!!!). Now, in the previous games Link is left handed. There are also pointers in TP that this is a new Link (the description of the hero's clothes gives clues). From that the reality is clear:there has to be two Links.
Then you say "Oh but in the original Zelda and Zelda II, Link's hair is brown." Get this: like your irises, your hair can change colour. To be more exact, you could be born blonde but as you get older, your hair goes darker. That must have happened to lefty Link, possibly during the events after the horrible Zelda CDi.

What about the upcoming Skyward Sword? Well, it has righty Link, therefore it is a sequel to TP, regardless of the timeframe.

Would you agree with this or not?
