"BEST GAME EVER!!!" Project Nominations

After seeing all the hype and all the complaining about Ocarina of Time, after seeing all the debate about the merits and disappointments of each installment in the Final Fantasy series, after reading about the awesomeness or suckitude of collectathons or Super Mario Sunshine, I've decided to embark on a little project.

I'm drawing some inspiration from GotY votes and Tides of Chaos's system-best polling. I'd like to undertake a massive request for nominations for the best game ever, on any platform. This will be large-scale and will result in voting, potentially bracketed depending on how people like that idea.

THE RULES

NOMINATIONS: You may provide a list of up to 100 games. You're free to nominate fewer than that if you like. Number your nominations, and don't edit your posts. If you wish to add more nominations, just make a new post continuing your numbering from where you left off.

(NOTE: This doesn't mean you have to RANK your nominations, just number them. I don't care what order you put them in, I just want an easy way to keep track of how many nominations are coming in from everyone.)

SCOPE: This nomination process includes all video games, past and present, on any platform (including PC/Mac and Arcade cabinets). Be sure to mention which platform your game is on so I don't have to track you down and ask for clarification.

BEST?: You can nominate games according to your own criteria. They can be the games that you think are objectively the best, or your favourites, or games you feel are influential.

STATS: I'll be compiling very basic stats during the nomination and voting process. All I'll need to know is your age and game release region (for most here it will be NA/EU/AU).

All of these nominations will be pooled and sorted, and then we'll find ways to narrow them down and begin voting. We may have genre- or platform-specific side-events as well.

I'll think on my list for a bit and probably try to post a chunk of it tonight.

Probably both.

After the nomination process I'll have a big long list, in order, which will be easy to just take the top 100 out of.

But I'll also have a few voting rounds to try to crown the cream of the crop.

I don't expect most people to actually be able to put together a full list of 100 games. It's hard for me to pick 100 great games I like out of my collection. I just wanted a suitably enormous number that would give people lots of room. I may only end up nominating 70 or so.

Questions 1 and 2: Because this is my list and not yours.

Question 3: Doom II is my favorite game of all time. It took what Doom did and made it a lot grander. The new monsters made it incredibly challenging and the new levels are expertly designed. Plus, this is the only game I care to play online.

They don't interest me. I played a bit of MW2 and wasn't blown away. Halo 2 was very meh. There's just nothing interesting out there. The Conduit was fun for a bit, but that's more due to the controls than anything. The Grinder looks amazing, too. But I don't go out of my way to try modern FPS. So it's not so much I don't like them as I don't have any interest.

I think you should vote based on what you like, not on what other people will be likely to vote on. That's what I intend to do. So far I've been rather depressed to see the banality of most lists which don't indicate a very large spectrum of gaming. The more the merrier I say.

Not everyone's played every game! Folks are only going to nominate what they like, and they're most likely going to like what they've played. If that makes most people here besides you banal blinders-wearing gamers, well, isn't that just a sad state of affairs.

Absolutely. You already know that the winner of this poll will be a good, highly popular game that everyone will have heard of, that's not necessarily the best ever in the majority of people's opinions but is the most widely liked. One of about 5 games always win these polls.

What will be more interesting are the games lower down the list, so everyone should vote for the games they like and especially the ones that aren't as popular. Not putting down Jogurt's project in any way, I'll be following with great interest.

Yes I know. I don't think there's anything wrong with their choices as great games its just that I feel this list is going to end up rather predictable. It just depresses me that there are so many great games out there that remain unknown and unloved by the modern generation. It's reflected in the sales of VC software too in a sense, which is why I think we'll see more and more of the franchise stuff and less and less of the interesting stuff that has occasionally peppered the service.
