I can't quite capture what made this game so compelling for me as a teenager. While I enjoyed its spiritual prequel and sequel as well this one is, for me, the game I enjoyed the most at the time. While everyone else was in love with their Link to the Past's and Secret's of Mana, this game seemed to me to be like a rare flower growing among a sea of corn. The story was mature beyond the appearance of its cutesy 2D graphics with themes of freindship, mortality and loss. While Final Fantasy VI was making many a 16 bitter cry over videogames for the first time it was this game that gave me the most compelling moments of the SNES era with moments of heartbreak and sacrifice among well drawn characters I genuinelly felt I cared about. There were not all the happy endings that videogames (especially Nintendo ones) had led us to expect and this made IoT interesting and refreshing in equal bursts. The game also practically begged the gamer to replay it for its secondary Gem quest...something I was more than happy to do one more than one occasion.

| I guess I should finish my list, although I don't think that the following games (except for the first 3) are that great. They are just good games, but nothing special. It's a shame because I know that I own quite a few games that are supposed to be great, but I just haven't played them yet. 66. Wario Land 4 (GBA) 67. Super Metroid (VC/SNES) 68. Digimon World (PSX) 69. Mario's Super Picross (VC/SNES) 70. Pokemon Trading Card Game (GB) 71. Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg (GCN) 72. Luigi's Mansion (GCN) 73. Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (GCN) 74. 8 Castlevania III Dracula's Curse (NES)- With 2 playable characters at a single time (with 3 extra to pick from, in addition to the standard Belmont), and branching level paths, this game had a lot of content (one of the most demanding games on the NES, actually, using the MMC6 chip). 9 Super Castlevania IV (SNES)- A lot of people here don't like it, but just the way it did all of these crazy things with the Super Nintendo was enough to make me happy. I like how it's one of the wierder Retroidvanias, and it's a really great SNES game. The aesthetics were also gorgeous. 10 Castlevania Rondo Of Blood (Turbo Grafx-CD)- Wow, this game is just fantastic. Firstly, it really did set the precedent for SotN, and the sprites from this game are still being reused to this day (case in point- Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth). It expands on the branching paths from Castlevania III, adds some new moves to Richter to make him...I dunno, more playable (nothing against the classic heroes), and even lets you play as Mario (AKA Easy Mode). 11 Castlevania Symphony Of The Night (PS1)- Wow. Seriously, if you don't like this game, there must be something wrong with you. First of all, it has great gameplay design. The Metroidvania style (of Castlevania) originated with this game, and it was executed so well here. The graphics were fantastic, and even better was the aesthetics, which are some of the best in the industry. Better yet, it has some really great 2D animation, Alucard being one of the most well animated 2D characters...EVER! Also, while they did cheat a little and recycle stuff from Rondo, it was OK because a) it was a direct sequel, so it made sense to have some continuity, and b) they improved the monsters with better animation and new attacks. It has better level design than the other Metroidvanias, and just so much attention to detail. The ridiculous amount of stuff the developers packed into this game is astounding, and really shows the care they put into the product. Obviously it has great music, but one interesting thing is that it is much more varied than the other games, and doesn't pay homage as much (which makes sense, as SotN was a big departure). The soundtrack is simply fantastic. Easily one of the TOP 10 best games of all time. 12 Castlevania Aria Of Sorrow (GBA)- After Symphony Of The Night, the Castlevania series had been going into a decline. First there was the horrible Circle Of The Moon, a game I hate with my soul. Then was Harmony Of Dissonance, which I thought was pretty good. But Aria Of Sorrow blew those two out of the water with its awesome soul system and general improvements to gameplay, coming much closer to the quality of Symphony Of The Night. 13 Castlevania Dawn Of Sorrow (DS)- Of course, after the bombastic awesomeness that was Aria Of Sorrow, Konami followed up with the superb Dawn Of Sorrow. Fantastic gameplay, with improvements to the original system, great graphics, nice music, and some neat extras and homages to previous games. All in all, the best first year DS game. Well, I'm done for now. Expect to see more posts from me later on. None of which will have to do with Castlevania. | |||

| This may have been asked already, but how are you going to handle a game that has versions on multiple consoles? Will you be grouping them together into one or listing each version separately? |

| Do you like my helmet? | You started your list several pages ago. I asked in the original post/rules, that people not repost their whole lists but only post the games they're adding to their previous posts, since I'm tallying up the nominations as we go. I don't want to accidentally add anything twice. |

| Okay, better late than never! Here's my list, in no particular order:
Whoo that that was tough! Pretty sure I've left out alot of great games, but this'll do. Also I'm 22, from the US of A.

| Do you like my helmet? | The nomination round is officially over today. I'll continue tallying and sorting the nominated games. I'll be posting a thread explaining the mechanics of the voting rounds within the next couple of days, and when I have all of the games sorted and ready, I'll start the voting polls. Everyone watch this subforum for more! And thanks to everyone for all of your hard work on these lists! |
