Quartermann: remember THQ's N64 wrestler No Mercy? It's coming back.
By 1UP Staff, 11/09/2007

It's Friday and we're all still reeling from the news that NPD numbers won't be gracing us in the weeks ahead, but as the latest issue of EGM falls into subscriber hands, the Quartermann's able to bring you the latest rumors. And lest we forget, Quartermann was right on the money about Bionic Commando.

This month, an old rumor resurfaces in a new form, as BioShock is apparently back on for PlayStation 3. Previously, it'd been speculated that Microsoft tied up 2K Games' aquatic adventure as an exclusive, but there's a change in the tide, as the world of Rapture may be Cell-enabled in 2008, after all.

And while Metal Gear fans are pouting over the most recent Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots delay, Kojima Productions hasn't been snoozing about taking the series in other directions. While everyone else is taking their franchises to Nintendo DS, Metal Gear is sticking to PSP, with a brand-new (that's not a spin-off) game headed to the portable, this time taking Snake back to the early days of his career.

We'll leave you with two last tidbits. One, THQ's WWF: No Mercy for the Nintendo 64 is coming back via the WiiWare service with completely updated rosters. Two, the lackluster performance of Sonic the Hedgehog hasn't deterred Sega; they're already hard at work at another "real" Sonic game. 2D, please!

See you next month, and make sure to check out the latest issue of EGM's special holiday "Games Overload" issue, landing in the hands of subscribers any day now

That would be awesome if that happened, as No Mercy is considered THE best WWE/F game ever by many folks. =D

...an updated roster? o.O

What's the point then having the true thing if we're just getting a game that doesn't have the wrestlers back in the day?!? If that is what I am thinking, then it should be a WiiWare title and disregard it as a N64 port.

Well, a lot of the old wrestlers are either now in TNA/no longer with WWE or dead, so really they proberly cannot use a lot of the old names.

Still, hope they leave some of the old ones they can leave in like The Rock or Steve Austin.

Well granted, but back then they didn't had Eddie or Chris. Weren't they in WCW back in the time anyway?

I'd like to play this, As I have Played every WWF/E game on the Playstation & PS2, so I sorta Stayed away from the N64, How are the controls, Are they like the old Smackdown type, or are they different, Could you elaborate on them?

PS: A Mii wrestling Game would be something I'd like, THQ if your reading this :D Hint hint?

Yeah, But THQ and Yukes are the pioneers of 3D wrestling games. Before they created the Smackdown series, we were playing 3D Wrestling games like they were street Fighter. Hardly a good 3D Fighting control scheme. Mii wrestling would have to use classic controls; I hate the new 'wii specific' controls... More control over your wrestler? LIES.

Brilliant news, I remember back in the day playing this game as much as I could with my mate (he had the N64, i had a Playstation).

No Mercy and the other wrestling games for the N64 are totally different to the smackdown ones. For one the graphics weren't so hot, which didn't bother me, simply because the gameplay was far more realistic (Ironic saying realistic when talking about wrestling) :P. Simply put when you got hit with a chair you stayed down! not like bloody smackdown hit with a chair 10 times and stil lget right back up.

Smackdown is basically an arcade wrestlign game, No Mercy was a simulation.

Har-de-har-har, I like it because its very well coreographed and there are interesting storylines.

How does it control? For instance, is there like a Control scheme (Like X&DPAD is attack and O&DPAD in the Smackdown games) or is it randomy button combos to do moves?

From what i remember i think you basically do a grapple and move the control stick a certain way to do different moves and to do the special you built up your power then taunted to go into the special mode then do a grapple and press one of the c buttons. I'm not too sure if thats exactly the way it was but it was something like that, no button bashing combo crap (save that for fighters like SF :P)

Sweet, Sounds pretty similar to Smackdown. Sounds like my Kinda game, They mighta sucked big time with their little 'Full Motion Controls' on SVR2008 but This could be what everyone (if your like me) wants, a 2008 Wrestling game with Classic Controls

This would sell by the boatload if it actually happens, regardless of what they set the price point at. But I haven't heard anything about it since the initial rumor, so I'm a little worried :(

WWF No Mercy, The N64 game. It was made before the name change.

I loved this game simply for the ability to customize all the rules.
Ever done this? Go into Royal Rumble mode and set the elimination rules to first blood and no ring out count. Make your way backstage and have a royal rumble in the parking lot. Tons of fun there.

Nowadays the rules are too rigid. You need some gameshark or code breaker to do that kinda thing in SVR '08, and the backstage areas have never been as fun (with a possible exception to Here Comes the Pain).

Here Comes the Pain had the best Backstage Options, Like the Makeshift steelcage you could get to By Driving your Opponent through the top of the Gas Cylinder Place backstage. Now they'vr replaced it all, so Instead of being able to go backstage you have to pick one place and fight in it. The farthest you can get from the ring is that little 'Hardcore' area in the fans, unless you count Parkinglot/Bar room Brawls.

But If they do remake it, I would like to see an awful lot more moves. And storylines and such.

Oh I remember Here Comes the Pain for the helicopter thing you could do out in New York City. I could never land it though, and ended up losing.

I remember Hitting a Shooting Star Press from that thing. Truely the best however, was Smackdown 4 When It allowed to to Climb onto the Smackdown Fist. I Did a Figure 4 Leglock (2) to somebody on top of the fist and made them tap. That was before the Button mashing submission system was introduced. It really did allow you to stage elaborate Finishes to matches.

You couldn't climb the fist in HCTP? I had Smackdown 4, so I remember doing it in that one.

Yeah, I think it was that one they removed it from.

I loved this game back in the day is pretty much teh best wrestling game to date gameplay wise. But not digging the whole updated roster thing but i know they pretty much have no choice, copyrights, and what not oh well should still be cool to see.
Sorry for the bump i know its an old topic
