Has anyone bought/tried the zapper yet and what's the verdict?
Now that Umbrella Chronicles is out today, I was thinking of pre-ordering
the zapper on amazon but then I saw these comments on metacritic:
"Link's Crossbow Training is a fun shooting game that's good enough to overshadow the faults of the main part of the package, the Wii Zapper"
"The Wii Remote and Nunchuk work perfectly fine on their own - especially considering the Wii Zapper is both less accurate and less comfortable."
so now I'm not so sure! Also, are the other makes any good?
-m.

I was really looking forward to the Zapper when it was announced but after reading reviews of it and LCT, I've decided not to. Appparently the Zapper adds no benifit to your gaming experience when playing the Zapper-compatible games and in some games, actually lessens the experience... I still want some of the "Zapper Games" though.

Honestly, I still plan on getting a Zapper for the purpose of having a faithful Arcade-shooter experience. The Wii Remote makes these types of games too easy, as you can just move your wrist and still be aiming very well. It's harder to maneuver a larger gun, and honestly I want a bit more challenge to games like Ghost Squad, which is an awesome arcade game. I want to keep the same feeling as that is why we play the games in the first place.

I m getting one for Xmas. I was worried it would be another assessory that won't get used much after release (DK Bongos anyone?) and me not being a RE or MOH fan doesnt help, but the annoncement of HOTD2+3 is enough for me. ^^

Yep, DK Bongos were a disgrace IMO. I'll get the Zapper over Christmas but I don't have huge expectations for it.

No one posted a real answer, so here I am.
First of all this sentence you quoted:
"The Wii Remote and Nunchuk work perfectly fine on their own - especially considering the Wii Zapper is both less accurate and less comfortable."
About this sentence, I'd like to ask who wrote it why revolver's design is always the same and why no one made one which shape is that of a wiimote...dumb people!
I'm sure it comes from IGN, isn't it? Stop reading reviews from those narrow minded guys; ultimate fanboys would be more trustable....
And they never, never, never try to change the options settings. Smart guys, really smart.
We all know the zapper doesn't do anything particular to the games. It just lets you have a different holding position for the remote.
For what concernes myself, I found that I can keep my hand more firmly than with the classic wiimote position. Also pulling the trigger is something that always makes my hand tremble (Metroid Prime 3) while keeping the hand in vertical position (with the zapper) makes my arm and hand stay more rigid, so I feel I'm deeply more accurate.
The zapper itself (without the controllers attached) is heavy and robust. It has screws everywhere and makes you feel it is a real piece of hardware, even if it's nothing more than a shell.
So, if you like having a light gun feel, I think it works perfectly that way.
If you're worried about real innovation and usefulness, well the zapper is nothing to care about.
Another complain about a review sentence I read.
Someone was arguing about the use of dominant hand over the other...well this was a crazy guy...there is nothing that blocks you from using the hand you want in whatever configuration, being it using the zapper or classic wii-mote+nuchuck. It is absolutely the same.

This sentence of mine that I quoted, meant that I like it because I feel I'm more accurate in pointing and specifically, at the moment of the trigger action.

Oh if you live in the UK go to gamestation there £19.99 there a bargin! I agree with the comments saying the game is so short.. but in my opinion its hard.. i get bronze on all of them... But its a tech demo not a fully blown game.. What do you expect for 19 quid? lol Anyways Duck Hunt was a tech demo and was a game cult hit..
So think about it, there great with the new resident evil and medal of honour!

Well, just got a Zapper and a copy of Ghost Squad, and I must say, I'm impressed. The Zapper takes a little while to get used to, but once you're used to it, it's a blast.Link's Crossbow training was a little difficult for me, and the game is seriously lacking depth, but it comes with the Zapper free so I'm not complaining much.Ghost Squad is decent. It's basically shooting every enemy in sight, rescuing hostages, along with the occasional sniper job.The camera moves for you, so all you have to do is shoot or do whatever onscreen action it tells you to do with the Z button on the nunchuk.Ghost Squad was originally an arcade game, so there's only 3 levels, but as you play through them and get higher scores you can unlock more missions within those levels. All in all, if you're looking for shoot 'em up arcade action, Ghost Squad is your game. And for only $30, it's a steal.

Finally got to play with the Zapper and Link's Crossbow Training. Pretty good. True, LCT is short, but its a free game with the hardware isnt it? Besides, you can always get the plat medals or keep trying to top your score. The Zapper its self isnt bad either. Kinda wish though the back part was removeable so it could be used like a proper lightgun, but I guess you can always hold it in your right hand like a lightgun....

The only bad mapping I found for RE:UC was the nunchuck, but only because the game tells you to shake it from side to side, when you actually have to shake it up and down. If you remember this, then everything works fine.
With that in mind, I think the Zapper definitely feels better for RE:UC then just the Wiimote.
As for Link's Crossbow Training, it's a simple yet fun game. I don't have the Zapper yet myself, but I played this and RE at a friend's, and it was funny when I completely demolished one of their high-scores by over 30000 points in LCT.:p
EDIT: I picked up the Zapper today, and I will admit, even though Link's Crossbow Training is indeed very short, it's actually very addicting trying to get the high scores. I can't wait to get Resident Evil or Ghost Squad for this.

I'm being real cautious about it. Me, I'm still playin' Duck Hunt so I'm use to the "handgun" zapper. Nyko's Perfect Shot almost blows Nintendo's effort out of the water. Too bad they've got that darn LCT with it.
Fact is, I went ahead and got RE:UC and I'm getting my ass kicked in the Resident Evil 3 scenario. I think either Zapper perephrial would help. Decisions, decisions...

Like I've said before, I like the Zapper. It gives the games an old-school arcade shooter feel to them, which is why the Zapper exists in my opinion. For me at least, it doesn't make the games too much easier or harder, but gives them a different feel.

All I know is, I'm getting the Perfect Shot when its released. Not because IGN game it a good review, because their opinion isn't worth the hype and following they’ve built up around themselves.
But the device itself looks like the kind of peripheral I've been waiting for, and the exact idea everyone thought the Zapper was going to be for Wii.
Now the big question is, with Wii having the lead and all the 3rd party support in Japan, will they make more shooters for the system? Or will the shooters suffer the same fate as RPGs, racers and fighters and only a handful of them will be made from 1 or 2 companies over the consoles life cycle.

Sega is offering good shooter support with HOTD 2 and 3 Return this March. I think we can expect a steady flow here and there. At least, HOTD2 will tide me over till any other shooters come out. That game has infinite replay value, like most older games.

Well most of us have eight fingers and two thumbs and are able to hold a gun.
I think you might want to rephrase that differently. Especially since most people DO have 4 fingers on each hand, not including their thumb.

Bought the wii zapper a while ago, and ghost squad. A very very fun game, wii zapper definatly adds alot to it. Best thing about ghost squad, you can play without the aiming recticle so it does feel like a light gun game.
Also 4player party mode is tonnes of fun, and there's so much to unlock.
I dont think the zapper is heavy, if im really into the game, ill play with two hands, but if im relaxing after work, i always choose the shotgun in Ghost squad, one hand on the zapper, other hand holding my beer -works great

I wrote the Wii Zapper off ages ago just because I didn't like the look of it. I thought it was too big.
I spent ages looking round shops for the Nyko Perfect shot but it appears as if there are no retail outlets in the UK that stock it. I even wrote Nyko an email asking if they had plans to release it in the UK, but I didn't even get a response.
In the end I found a gun shell in HMV that is just like the perfect shot. It even has the little thing on the end that you fold over to keep the remote locked in. The shell is called the Wiigun and is made by Venom; it cost £10.00.
I'm really pleased with it, it works great for Ghost Spuad and Umbrella Chronicles, although I do find UC slightly easier with the remote.
Here is a link to the gun on the HMV website. http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;-1;-1;-1&sku=777932
