Laying in bed the other night I started wondering about the next Nintendo console and what they might do with it. I think that the controller will be pretty similar to Wii, if we look at Nintendo history we had the SNES pad which was a refinement of the NES design then the step up to the N64 pad and then the Gamecube which was a refinement of the N64 pad, then the step up to the Wii then if the pattern continues a refinement for the Wii+1.
As for the actual console I think they'll either stick with DVD or go for HD-DVD, they'll include 1080p support, perhaps a large (by today's standards) solid state drive. Hopefully they'll continue the virtual console and maybe even allow Wii owners to import their previously purchased games.
Does anyone else have any predictions? Maybe you have an idea that you think they should use but won't.

What's the average console life span? 7 years?
At any rate, I think it's safe to say that Nintendo will allow customers to transfer VC data. I also believe the "Wii2" will still support IR in some capacity. Anything else is up in the air.
Oh, and it'll still be white.

I really hope that VC games can be imported from the Wii to the new Nintendo console. What a rip-off if not.
And the new console should have Gigabytes of memory, because we want to download Saturn and Dreamcast games with it. ;)
And the new console should have this new headtracking system:

I'd say the average console lifespan is about five years, of course there are exceptions like the Famicom, PS1 or PS2 but five years is pretty standard. The Wii however I can see going for above average.
That head tracking system looks amazing, if they incorporated that into a console as standard it would be awesome.

Head-tracking? No, thanks! The day I have to gesture with my hands, arms, head, legs and feet in order to play a game is the day I'm going to stop playing video games. *slight exaggeration*
Anyways, five years is about average for a console generation. I still don't see how some people see the PS3 and Xbox 360 enduring for a ten-year period. Never going to happen. Just look at how far technology has come within the time span of '96-'06. They'll have to come up with new consoles before then.
Back to Wii, yes, VC games better be transferable to Nintendo's next console. If that's going to be the case, I hope that's going to be the same case for WiiWare titles. I still have little want for HD (although that may change at some point in the future), but a Wii successor without a decent storage space won't do.
I'm still hoping that we'll see a drive add-on around the time of release of WiiWare.
EDIT:
Actually, I didn't watch that video before. Technology-wise it's pretty neat, but it seems to me it would be pretty impractical when it comes to actually playing games. Do you really want to have to move about the room constantly to play? I don't think so. These days, I mainly play games to relax after a long workday, not to get a workout, thank you very much.

Those only work with single player games. Having this on split screen probably wouldn't provide a big enough field of view.

Anyway, they make Wii controls, they make Zapper, they make Wii Fit controls, dancing mats, bongo controllers, guitars, microphones, .....
so why no headtracking? Metroid Prime 4 Headtrackers anyone?

It'll probably be quite a fresh attempt because lots of people aren't going to buy a Wii2 if it only has a different controller and improoved power.
HD-DVD? No. just no way.
It's region-free (bonus for customers but Nintendo arent big on that) and it's a doomed format (lets face it blu-ray has won)
Built in HDD is guranteed quote me if you want but I gurantee you it will have a HDD. Nintendo will learn from the mistake of not having it on Wii. Trust me.
I suspect it'll be about 20-60gb
I'm wondering if they'll take the DS + Dreamcast VMU and make an interactive tablet on the top part of the controller. With standard controls at bottom, motion controls too maybe. Sounds too complex in practice though. thats the only thing I can think of is a proper LCD display (DS quality) on the controllers. like GBA and DS console connectivity it'll be for maps, personal stuff in Multiplayer, stats etc. probably touch sensetive.
Personally I'm hoping for Gamecube 2. Back to power/graphics being equal/ish to competitor. With greater BC, works with wii/cube games too (cube games downloadable)
Being so far away, im actually more interested in seeing what Nintendo has up their sleeves for DS 2. In a recent interview Iwata said they have to keep fresh because even the Wii will become 'standard' and normal and people may begin to lose interest and some people will still not be convinced to play videogames by it.
