I am still considering buying a PS3 and needed to know which ps3 sku will be able to play ps1 games (so I can play FFVII and FFVIII and I need to make the appropriate purchase.

I am pretty sure they all do. It's PS2 compatibility that is sketchy, believe it or not.

Jo-Yo is right. I'm pretty sure they all have PS1 compatibility too.
I think there is even a way to download old PS1 games and play them on a PSP through the PS3.
PS2 compatibility is a mess. Some systems do it well, some do it poorly and some don't do it at all, depending on the model.

All models of PS3 play PS1 games, infact the other day I was re-enjoying Resident evil 2 on my PS3 with wireless dualshock 3 ;)

OK GREAT!!! now I'm sold and will be looking for a MGS 80 gb console. anything bad about it?? I plan to get it sometime next month. (on a ebay spending spree at the moment, check out the retro gamers thread)

The Models which have ps1 compatiblity are:
PAL: 40GB, 60GB, 80GB (Coming Soon)
NTSL: 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB.
The Models which have ps2 compatiblity are:
PAL: 60GB
NTSL: 20GB, 60GB, 80GB (2007 Model)

Good to know, I don't think I'll ever use the PS2 B/C, since I plan on keeping my PS2, but I'll definitely need PS1 B/C, so I can use the Remote Play feature.
