I never got the chance to play this back in the days of the SNES, and I never got around to buying it when a port was released onto the GBA, though I did really want too. So naturally, as soon as it hit the Virtual Console I immediately downloaded it with very high hopes, and I wasn’t disappointed. On my first play I found it surprisingly playable and really fun, though the difficulty did take me by surprise.
The gameplay is very fast paced, and despite the difficulty, it’s as addictive as a kilogram bag of Haribo Starmix. There are several great weapons you can use to blast your way through the game, including homing missiles, a laser and a flamethrower. Your primary weapon is fairly weak, but can shoot very quickly, which is useful for certain parts of the game. You only use it if you don’t have a picked up weapon.
The levels are very well designed, and have tons of variety in them, including 1 frantic level which has you blasting enemies while on a motorbike.
The controls are spot on, very simple and easy to use. You use B to jump, Y to shoot, A to use a special and X to switch weapons; you can hold 2 of them at a time. They work perfectly, and can’t really be improved on.
The graphics in the game are very detailed, and the animation for the enemies and bosses is great.
The soundtrack for the game is really good, and it really sets the style of the game in place.
The game overall is brilliant, and a perfect example of how the VC helps people discover classics they wouldn’t have had the chance to play before. At £5.60 it’s complete steal which I recommend to anyone.
