So far Square says they do not want to release anything yet on the VC, anyone else saddened about this news? I would love to play Chrono Trigger or Secret of Mana again!

There has already been a post about this.

It will be a shame if Chrono Trigger is never released on the VC. Chrono Trigger is the best RPG that I've ever played and even though I still have it for the SNES I'll still download it if it ever gets released.

Yes, Chrono Trigger is a must-be, and also Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2) the best Game I've ever played in my life.

I hope we get to see some of these classic Square rpgs. Especially as, unlike the FF series, I don't think they've been re-released thus far.

@Regii

Problem is, a lot of these games were never released in Europe or the US. Even if Chrono Trigger came out in the States, under current VC rules, we won't get it, and things like Seiken Densetsu 3 most people outside Japan have only played fan translations of on emulators (evil no-gooders :D). Square isn't likely to put teams to work on games they thought were of niche appeal 10 years ago, much less now.

Lest we forget, it took DeJap nearly 5 years to release a complete translation of SD3, and even after another group had translated FFV, Square released an inferior (overwhelming opinion, this) translation of its own in all those PS and GBA re-releases; obviously they're loath to use that work, even though they probably could.

Don't get me wrong though, I'd buy them in a heartbeat if they came out (if it's one thing Square underestimates, it's the fanaticism of SNES-era RPG gamers), just think it's unlikely that they will.

I think the big ones are

Super Mario RPG
Secret of Mana (this was Square, right?)
Chrono Trigger

And then the Final Fantasys which will probably never make it to the VC.

I've already responded to this in the other thread, but as far as I'm aware, Nintendo of Europe and Nintendo US have both said that there is no such rule, and that there's every possibility that we'll see Chrono Trigger on Euro VC (for example). They may have changed that position since, but I don't recall them doing so.

Has chrono trigger ever been ported or is it a one time U.S. game?

I believe that Chrono Trigger has never been released in Europe.

Also, apparently there are some copyright and ownership issues with the game, which may make a VC re-release difficult.

Chrono Trigger was on one of the US FF collections for the PS1. Final Fantasy Chronicles, I think?

The US got FF4 & Chrono Trigger, and FF5 & 6 in two sets. The UK got FF4 & 5 as a set, and FF6 on its own. If I remember correctly. I have the two US sets at home, imported at some expense (which effectively means I paid rather a lot for Chrono Trigger :)), but I'm at work at the moment.

It might be that SquareEnix just aren't happy with the terms of the deal with Nintendo. I have no idea how the economics of the VC work out for the original publisher/developer.

You are correct, sir!

So without a PS1 or SNES there are no other options, but to hope for a VC release.

Well if they released ActRaiser which was an Enix game, why don't they release other Enix games like I don't know, Ogre Battle?

These are the Square Enix titles that I know have been released in Europe and US for the SNES:

ActRaiser (available on VC)
ActRaiser 2
SoulBlazer
Illusion of Time/Gaia
Terranigma (Europe only)
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Mystic Quest: Legend/Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest
Final Fantasy II & III (or IV and VI) (US only)
Robotrek (US only)
EVO Search for Eden (US only)
The 7th Saga (US only)
Super Mario RPG (US only)
Chrono Trigger (US only)
Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen (US only)
Brain Lord (US only)
King Arthur & The Knights of Justice (the "floating log of crap", US only)
Paladin's Quest (US only)

And most of them are the former Enix Corporation's IPs! :o

Wikipedia and eBay.

I also used to run a website called SNESzone. Does anyone remember that? 8)

Ahh right.

They haven't been released on VC yet, except for ActRaiser. I was listing all the games that the former Squaresoft and Enix Corporation released in the west for the SNES.

Well, let's hope that some of those get on VC (I really want Ogre Battle).

remember that S-E has been sending S&D letters for CT remake projects, so it is a possibility!
