View Full Version : Sound in VC MegaDrive/Genesis games

Why did nobody tell me how terrible the sound is in these games? Am I really the only one who noticed the big downgrade the sound received from the original console versions?
I mean, I can live with 50Hz Streets of Rage 2 as long as it moves as smoothly as the original (as seems to happen in this case, fortunately), but many sound samples sound just wrong, the sound stutters now and then, and even some quite simple beeps play incorrectly (ie, the score recount).

This really makes some parts of its melodies unbearable and itīs something unforgivable in a game like this one.

So, if youīre planning to download this game or youīre playing it on the VC for the first time, just donīt think the original sounded anything like this. For Yuzo Koshiroīs sake.

on my TV the megadrive is looking and sounding terrible, and the VC is a major improvement for me.
I hear nothing wrong with the sound.

Erm... Okay, itīs an improvement over a broken MegaDrive, but thatīs kinda irrelevant... =|

Not broken just not compatible with my TV I guess...

Is it just Streets of Rage 2 that there is a problem with? I can't say I've noticed anything wrong with the MegaDrive sound on games that I've downloaded (but then I haven't downloaded many MD games since I've got most already).

If all the games share the same emulator (which would make sense), most of them might be showing these inaccuracies I've mentioned. Have you compared the noise made by the end-of-level signpost in Sonic 1 and 2 with the real thing? I was told it also sounds quite worse.

You might think the original games sounded this bad if you've never played them before in the original MegaDrive. But I'm paying for a faithful recreation of the originals I bought back in the day, and I feel kinda cheated, honestly.

I'm tempted to download a game I already own now to compare it side-by-side before I buy any more Mega Drive games on VC. The thing for me is I've only ever bought VC games that I don't already own, and since I happen to already have a reasonable collection of Sega games (as in the originals) that means I haven't bought much on Mega Drive VC (and have got nothing to compare). If I do it I'll let you know the results.

I'm telling you, the sound flaws I'm hearing in Streets of Rage 2 don't even need a side-to-side comparison to be noticed.

If you're familiar with the original you'll start noticing them leaving the intro for a few seconds.

I've noticed a fair few 'off' sound effects in Dynamite Headdy and Sonic 2, probably because I'm so familiar with those games. It's pretty annoying, especially since we're paying a fair bit for them, but in all fairness you won't notice if you haven't played the game before.

Ouch, and I was just wondering if Dynamite Headdy wouldn't have any noticeable inaccuracies.

I might pass on getting any more of these while my MegaDrive still works, until they fix these issues.

It's just the one sound as far as I know in DH, when the green robot tries to pull you in, the sound sounds a long more 'zingy' than it did on the Mega Drive.

I have to say that the sound in SoRII did seem different to how I remember it, but I wasn't sure if it was just my fading memory or not.

I have only 3 Mega Drive games:
Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy and Gain Ground
and for me they're running perfect.

Ive noticied in Sonic 2 some off sound effects and stuff aswell. But for me the off sound effects are apparent in most emulated versions. Firstly SMC+ on xbox had some off sounds and same with SMD Collection on PS2 & PSP. Both them have some off sounds (Specially the PSP version). When compared to the original you can notice them more.

Still haven't had a reply from Nintendo or Sega regarding the sound issues. Looks like if they can't give good news they'd rather ignore you.

I agree with the sound of Street of rage 2 on the VC.
I was disappointed when I listened to the game's music and effects, I was expecting to hear the music as the original game but it wasn't.
I've the original game and the real console, so I'm not talking about what I remember and listening to real thing, right now.
