View Full Version : Shadow Dancer DEMANDS your respect!

Shadow Dancer was never received as the greatest arcade game. As a follow-up to Shinobi it just didn't capture what was so good about the original game.

All the more reason why the Megadrive conversion of Shadow Dancer DEMANDS your respect! It totally re-envisioned the arcade game and in my opinion made it a more worthy follow-up to the original Shinobi arcade game.

However it was not received well at the time by the gaming press. My beloved Mean Machines magazine didn't even cover it (they did review the crappy Master System version however!). C+VG had the nerve to give it just 63% which is tragically low! Read the PDF scan here:

Forget all this. Shadow Dancer on the Megadrive is excellent and must be downloaded at once when it hits the Virtual Console (which is most likely very soon)

This video will convince all who doubt:

It is just great ninja based fun. Heck he even has a dog now! Who could fail to love this? :p

I have to confess that back in the day, I was a Sega Power reader, and while that might mark me for ridicule and/or death in these Mean Machines-friendly halls, SP did at least give Shadow Dancer the respect it deserved.

As I recall, the G64 had a port too, which was really very good.

If its a Shinobi game, how come Shinobi isn't in the title like his other games?

It is, the complete title was:
Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi

...like his other...

??
Check out what a shinobi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinobi) is. That's not a name, but a figure I'm sure you're familiar with.

Dazza already knows my love of Shadow Dancer. Why Mean Machines ignored it is beyond me, it's a fanastic game with brilliant graphics, funky music and kick-ass gameplay.

I think it's unfair to compare it to Revenge of Shinobi because they're two very different games, but I certainly know which one I would pick.

The bonus stage music is amazing.

I got this game with my Genesis back in Jan 1992 and I played the crap out of it for the next year. I can remember the visuals being jaw dropping, like Gears of War is today. That boss that would come out of the brick wall was totally wicked!

Aye, in my opinion it looks the best out of the upcoming ninja games. I'll download it soon enough.
