Would I be right in thinking that Sega Mega-CD 32X games would be impossible on the VC? I know everyone is still wondering if we ll see the Mega CD or 32X, but just for laughs, I thought I d open the discussion for the games that used both add ons.

And not to mention only 5 games ever used both add ons... o.o

Impossible nah, unlikely yes. If it can run N64 stuff, the computing power of the emulator would laugh at MCD 32X. That console was a pain in the backside, it took 3 full size mains adapters to run, and because they were the kind with the tranformers on the plug they didnt fit next to each other on a standard 4 gang extension lead. I cant think what games were on it anyway. I've got a MegaCD and most of the games I on that are shoot em ups. Never got as far as buying a 32X always looked like a waste of cash (which I'm pretty sure it was) the only game I can think of that was on it was Chaotix, but I think that was a cart not a disk.

Those systems have been emulated almost perfectly for a while, and the Wii is fast enough, so they of course could theorically appear on the VC.

I'll come out someday.... But the C64 and the Mastersystem were just released so give the saga CD a year or two.

or it might be on nintendo's next console 0o0oo0oooo

He's not talking about Sega CD games, he's talking about the super monstro Sega CD-32X games! :D I had both systems, and I don't even know which select five games used both... Care to enlighten us?

But as for just the extensions themselves... Sega CD is the one I'd most want to see, as I think I mentioned somewhere else.

There were 4 Mega CD 32X games released in Europe, they're all FMV games and all updates of existing Mega CD games. None of them were published by Sega so it's unlikely that they'll appear on VC.

The main problem with FMV games on the unexpanded Mega CD was that the number of colours were limited to 64 simultaniously on screen, as with the Mega Drive. That was why the video quality of the FMVs were always relatively poor especially if they were using actual film. It wasn't to do with compression because there was plenty of space, it's more because of the limited on-screen colours and low resolution.

On the other hand the 32X+Mega CD was capable of over 32000 colours on screen at once and FMV could run at a much higher resolution, and this would have made a big difference. Not just for FMV games, other games could have benefitted as well. A lot of potential was wasted, I think if only the next generation of consoles hadn't arrived so quickly things would be completely different.

Poor old Sega was constantly screwed over by between-generation experimentation.

Things were more unpredictable than ever in the early 90s and I think Sega must have expected the Mega Drive to last a lot longer than it did. The Famicom in Japan had over 7 years before it was replaced by the Super Famicom and it was still popular by the time the Mega CD was released. But people had high expectations for the newcomers (3DO, Jaguar, Playstation), they all made big claims, and Sega and Nintendo couldn't afford to fall behind.

The obvious problem with the Mega CD and 32X was that people essentially had to pay for 3 consoles, and in the end they were hardly supported because not enough people bought them. If there was just a couple of years longer prices would have dropped, integrated consoles (like a combination Mega Drive+Mega CD) could have been released making it a lot easier for people to have access to all 3 (or two, maybe if the Mega CD was more successful the 32X wouldn't have been made). I'm sure that must have been Sega's plan. I think people are too quick to criticise, it was a mistake but not a bad idea at the time. It's just a shame we'll never know what the Mega CD+32X was capable of.

List of games

Corpse Killer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corpse_Killer)
Fahrenheit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahrenheit_%281994_computer_game%29)
Night Trap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Trap)
Slam City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slam_City)
Supreme Warrior (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Supreme_Warrior&action=edit&redlink=1)

I believe Night Trap was the only game anyone cared about and it caused some controversy in America too.

There's some information about the 4 Europe released games here, and comparisons with their standard Mega CD versions:
