I was wondering if it's worth backing up my VC games since I can just redownload if I erase them. Can I play them on anthor Wii or just my own?

Games can only be played on your own Wii.

Although I have an SD card I kind of regret as the only benefit I can see is not having to delete / re-download when you run out of internal space. May be more worthwhile once you can play games straight from the sd card (which isn't currently possible - you have to copy it back to the wii).

I can't wait for that update

I understand that technology should help making life easier, but this is chronic laziness.

Keeping the SD card inside the Wii and copying files back and forth is not such a great effort!

Oh, and backing-up is the best practice one can ever do, so it's not fair calling it the "only benefit".

backing up is a benefit if you actually lost the files completely...you can always download it again so it may be best practice for saved game files and the like the VC game itself can (theoretically) never be lost.

Nintendo bought the rights for the FAT system a while ago, if this is added in a future firmware update it might solve the the "reading direct from SD memory" thing pople want, oh and possible a USB HardDrive addon or so

It might do, except for people like me who run Macs. FAT don't play nice with OS X.

Save state is "embedded in the image"? dident know/notice yet. What i think off SD cards is backup for if/when the download service goes offline. Only issue we got then is the wii's lifetime itself. Is it not possible to forward the download service account if the wii dies right? (since the accout follows the wii AFAIK). And how do they manage it if it does. Assuming you downloaded say 50 games, its all virtual and you cant use the physical cartridges itself, like store bought games(do you have to throw new cash at them to regain the investment?)... (sorry for the paranoia, better safe than sorry right ;) )

Peace

I think it's a matter of letting Nintendo know...and linking your Wii Shop account to your Nintendo account wouldn't hurt your case either.

looks like its confirmed in another thread too :)

Send it back to Nintendo; they'll be able to transfer your VC games over if you're worried about losing them.

Do you loose your saves if you re download?

Your save states are on a different block than the game so I guess you don't. Haven't tested though.

I think the main problem would be if it's allowed to play games from the sd cards themself it might be easier for people to just move over data to another console or somehow go around the Wii lock for the games with the SD card, maybe by putting certain files on that. Of course I have no idea how these things really work, just a thought on why it's not possible to play from the SD cards at the moment.

Well, the purchase log is still locked to your Wii, so I don't really see how there would be a problem from playing off of an SD card.

You dont loose save states ifnot you delete it yourself.

As for backing up save states only Battery Saves is copyable to SD(Zelda etc.)

Well, I just use my SD card to screw around with the Photo Channel (when I'm bored) or to put music on my Excite Truck game.

Is there other Wii games that you can use the SD card to play music?

They'll only work on your Wii because the software code is tied to it.

Well, with the release of Brawl it appears that having an SD card might actually be a benefit. So, is there any recommended cards out there, besides the "official" Wii SD cards, which seem a bit pricey for their capacity? Anyone have luck with other cards that might not cost as much?

The wii only supports 2 GB and less cards at this time, right?

Thanks in advance.

Don't know if they fixed this issue with the most recent system updates, but at least since last year, Nintendo officially stated that only SD cards up to 2 GB were supported.

As you already noticed Nintendo cards are quite expensive. Any other big manufacturer is ok, I guess. I have a 1GB Verbatim (which was probably the cheapest among the known brands), but I don't use it so much so I can't swear on its reliability. But again: any big name should be fine.

I got a 1GB white Wii card, and I haven't come anywhere close to even putting anything on it. It'll be useful once I start getting some more VC games (mainly winning bets with friends—we've been betting Wii points lately ). Anyway, the prices have really come down on them. I think I've seen 2GB cards for $20 at some stores.

My 1GB Micro Center card (which I got for free ) Works perfectly. Can't complain at all, and I'm mostly using it for Brawl these days.

I thought Brawl data couldn't be saved to SD card (except for pics, replays, & stages)...

At first I thought it wouldn't be a big deal, but it'd be nice to be able to transport my records and unlocked stuff to a friend's house without taking the whole Wii. I guess it's a minor inconvenience.

I've got a friend who brings around the Xbox360 just to show his Halo3 replays.
And I brought my Wii around, several times a week, for half a year.
I know that when one feels in good faith, sees every countermeasure as just an hindering problem, but "smart guys" that will just copy a game not to pay it outnumber us, you should know it.
