View Full Version : Quick Q on the 64 Channel

Now that I'm an owner of a Nintendo Wii, I did a little shopping on the virtual console earlier this morning. You've gotta love the selection of games available, but am I the only one that thinks the 64 channel is a little bare? If they're dropping so many games on the virtual console every week, why are they making such a big deal over releasing 64 titles? It's not like they're remaking any of the games, right?

Right. But note how there were far less N64 titles than SNES or NES games, for example.

If they released them at the same pace, they'd run out of N64 announcements too soon, and that could make some customers forget about those games (theorically).

N64 games on the VC are usually a big deal, and we have to be thankful that all of the currently released ones are generally very good.

N64 Games= Big Releases, according to Ninty. So, 1 per month...

Quite honestly I can't see how Nintendo can consider releasing a 64 game on the virtual console such a big deal, but whatever works for them I guess. One release per month doesn't sound that great. Upgrading to two a month wouldn't be that bad.

Although the 64 didn't have a huge game library, not all games released on the console were good titles. If they could go to a format where they release one well known 64 title and one lesser known that wouldn't be so bad.

I agree, I find it kinda weird that there is over 35 games out for the Sega drive but only 9 currently for the 64. But, all the ones out for the 64 right now are the best of the best. I'd kill for Killer Instinct or 1080 Snowboarding, but I know the chances of those games coming out soon or at all is very slim.

The chances for 1080° Snowboarding appearing on VC soon are VERY HIGH! It was one of the early '98 games, and it's an original game by Nintendo. There were some licensed snowboards though (Lamar) but just like Wave Race 64 they would cut out the licensed advertisements and make Wii advertising instead.

And there's also hope for Killer Instinct, seeing that one of the characters (Chief Thunder) makes a cameo appearance in Donkey Kong Country 2. As far as I'm aware, Killer Instinct was developed for Nintendo. If you look at the credits, all of the copyrights go to Nintendo.
At least Rare says, it's completely off to Nintendo what of their back catalogue is going to be released on VC.

I'm just waiting for Nintendo to announce Smash Bros., Donkey Kong 64, and Goldeneye 007. When that happens, I'll be done buying N64 games.

That's great! I never looked at it that way. 1080 is still the best snowboarding game I've played yet (although I haven't played the new SSX on Wii yet). The gameplay and the feeling hasn't been matched yet IMHO.

I loved Golden Eye too. The versus mode with friends was the best part though. I think if they can somehow copy that and come out with a new version using Wifi and the Wii remote they'd have a serious hit.

I hated 1080 snowboarding...

Yes the SNES is coming out too slowly. All VC games are coming out too slowly. If they were to simply release them all as they finished them instead of forcing us to wait for no reason whatsoever they would sell a whole lot more, and boost sales of their systems (yes it is possible to sell more systems, but only if they have games pepole want).

Yeah like remember the time when nintendo put out donkey kong country 2 by accident, then quickly deleted it? About a month and a half later they release it. I understand waiting a little but not too long. Like what do you wanna bet that super mario rpg is already finished but they just want to wait untill christmas.

Well they should start hussling up with more N64 releases in a month. Not every month, but once in a while. Add a first party, and a third party title.

The wii is almost a Year old and only has 9 n64 games to show for it.

I'd be interested in Conker's Bad Fur Day as I never played, it but hear good things. Problem is though it's Rare isn't it:(

Think you have a better chance on the later, not just because it's from Rare, but its a very high M-rated game. >.>

And to slim the chances of seeing a release of Conker's Bad Fur Day - it wasn't published by Nintendo - it was published by THQ.
If this was a movie it would get 3 Oscars:
For graphics/animations, voice acting and humour.

Out of curiosity..to anyoen here who has an Xbox or a XB 360 you should IGNORE the N64 version of Conker's Bad Fur Day and instead get the Live and Reloaded version. It's the same game just updated to a more modern standard.

I heard it's really not the same as the N64; seemed like it took away a few of the mulitplayer modes from it. Granted, it does look pwerty, but that doesn't make a game better.

In the original game Conker was just a nice guy trapped in a crazy world.

But in LIVE&RELOADED Conker looks like a bad squirrel. The graphical redesign of the Conker model is the worst thing about it. He lost his charm.
Plus, why make Conker look like a bad guy and then censore all the swearing? This is my second complain about L&R - why is the kiddy N64 version so much more sarcastic and evil than the Xbox version?

I haven't played much of the remake on XBox, because it wasn't that fun with all the censoring.. but in the end I still think the Xbox version is good enough (if you don't know the N64 version). After all, it has better graphics.

It's R . U . D . E ! ! !
just let me give you five examples out of the top of my head.

!!! spoilers below:

1. help a drunken bee with a fat red eye pollinate a big breasted flower, betray his wife

2. throw toilet papers on a gigantic, singing(!) pile of s h i t

3. ride a t-rex and bite into the balls of a giant caveman, and then tore out pieces of his a s s

4. get a street brawl gang and mash up door watchers to get into a disco, drink barrels of beer and p i s s on the dancing people.

5. fight joint smoking devils, see guts and body pieces flying around in a nazi war, see gore and splatter while blasting off zombie heads, fight in matrix style slo motion inclusive bullet camera etc etc.

Are you guys saying that Nintendo is having issues releasing "M" rated games on the virtual console because they're worried about the content displayed in the game?

SKTTR
26th October 2007, 01:20 PM
Yes. There's a reason why there is no game on the VC that is for age "18" or even "16".

First, it's an overall businessman decision. You make the most money with games for "everyone". And you get really good money with games aged at "6" and "12". Games aged at "16" is good and all, but the millions of parents wouldn't get it for their millions of kids on christmas. Forget these millions of dollars that could be made. It's logical - you make the most money with games aged from 5-95.

With such things as the "child security option" built into the Wii, you see where the market's going.

Anyway, most of the games that were rated "16" or "18", are now rated "6" or 12",
for example Golden Axe and Splatterhouse.
But this is just a graphic issue. Older games can't compare to the animated gore in todays titles, so they got re-rated.

Some games even got off the banned-list, because they don't seem violent at all these days. Violence got a long way. Such old games have good chances to appear on the VC.

There are other games where it's all like twenty years ago. Games including racism, porn or drugs. If you want such a game, you're on the wrong platform.

And now for a list of good games that were "for mature audiences only" back in the day, hoping for them to be released on the VC.

You might not know, Nintendo of Europe is in Germany, and so is the BPjM who bans games and the USK who rates games (and works close with PEGI - the EU counterpart), so as history showed, things may turn out different in Europe and in the US.

My personal top five spots claiming Rareware's games.

GoldenEye (N64) - Banned in Germany
A gory moment: You can zoom in with a Sniper from like 2 kilometres
(yes, the sight was great and the levels where big with no pop-ups)
to the head of some civilian.
If you shoot, there's a bit of blood but the animations were stunning enough.
And you lost your mission objective, meaning do the level all over again, so this game is in a way more human than the latest mature games.
At least you're James Bond and have to kill the bad buddies.
I think it's enough to have this re-rated at age "16", since I was 16 myself when I played this game. But NoE has to speak with the BPjM.
If the game will still be banned there's no hope (at least for Germans).
Could there be a way to just change the language of your Wii and get this game from other European countries?

Killer Instinct (SNES) - Banned in Germany
A gory moment: Just the usual Mortal Kombat like fatality stuff.
This for sure will be re-rated to age "16".

Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64) - Somehow the most actual, brutal and goriest game was aged at "16" (even in Germany) with a parental advisory: "explicit humour".
A gory moment: Too much! Flying cow pieces and bursting rats come to mind. As this game has somehow never been banned, with all the nazi, porn and drug references, it only got a rating aged at "16". There's good chances of seeing this one appear - but it got published by THQ, not by Nintendo or Rare - if that means something.

Perfect Dark (N64) - Banned in Germany
Same case as GoldenEye.

Killer Instinct Gold (N64) - Banned in Germany
Same case as Killer Instinct.

Other mature games we'd like to see on VC.

Resident Evil 2 (N64) - Banned in Germany
It has aged pretty much in comparison to Resident Evil 4 and RE:UC.(Nintendo lately decided not to release RE:UC in Germany.)
Still Resident Evil 2 doesn't look very gory anymore, but is scary as ever.
Get it off the ban-list and re-rate at "16" seems appropriate.
In the end it's a great game and a classic.

Mortal Kombat (SNES/MD/N64) series - Most of it banned in Germany.
This series has a cult following it and so there's at least money to make.
The comical death sequences were rather fun than gory or anything.
Yes, there were litres of blood coming out of the bodies, but it never was as realistic as it would suggest with all the talking about MK.
The newer 3D Mortal Kombat games are much gorier than the classic ones and got a "16" rating, so the old ones are sure to be re-rated and get off the ban-list.
Anyway, since there are no western publishers on the VC yet, we'll have to wait until Nintendo decides to do so. In this case Midway would be important. Not just for MK but also for...

Doom series - Banned in Germany.
There were two Doom games I really liked, for the tense atmosphere:
Doom (SNES) and Doom 64 (N64).
These games need a re-rating. The graphics are first generation First Person Shooter and you know, FPS have come a veeery looong way.
In the end, you're just killing demons and monsters, no human beings.
What if Ghouls'n Goblins was a FPS?

This list isn't complete. Feel free to write your own "Mature Games I want on VC" here.

Wait a minute...of all those N64 games, the one that really got explicit adult material is NOT banned in Germany? o.O

SKTTR
26th October 2007, 03:01 PM
yes, there is one easy solution to this.

Killer Instinct - you kill men.
Killer Instinct Gold - you kill men.
GoldenEye - you kill men.
Perfect Dark - you kill men.

Conker's Bad Fur Day - flowers having sex, devils smoking pot, animals are nazis, living and speaking items (with feelings) getting ripped apart brutally
- but - you kill no men.
