13th July, and we now have Paper Mario on the European VC. Yay!

I've been waiting ages to play this game as I couldn't afford many games back in the day, and was worried I'd have to wait at least another month to do so but the chance has come early :D

Well, Nintendo Power does have it in their July issue so my guess it'll come out in July and if it doesn't probably August.

I think I've said this before, but I've never played PM either (or any of the later N64 games: moved on to the DC by then), so I'm looking forward to this. I'll wait for this to be released on the VC and then get The Thousand Year Door afterwards, as I've heard great things about that too.

I'm sure this'll be out before too long; Nintendo would almost be shooting themselves in the foot if they released another N64 game the amount of hype and expectation this has brought on. Another Zelda II fiasco and the Americans will be howling for blood

You'll be glad you bought it when you play PM for the first time.

And no, I won't howl for blood since Paper Mario MUST be coming to the VC around the same time for Japan, Europe, North America, AND Australia. Why? It is just too good for anyone to put off for a week.

Even better than ALTTP!

I love this game :D

Christmas 2001 was very special thanks to it! And I've only gone and bought it again!

Loving it all again though, memories flooding back :D Has anyone noticed the spinning N64 logo when you start the game up, or when you go back to the game from the home menu? Strange, seems it has to keep loading the game up. Must be pretty tricky to emulate.

Mendez
13th July 2007, 01:24 AM
Yeah, I noticed that too. I thought it had reset the game at first XD

Well I'm off to bed now, I'll play it properly tomorrow!

I've just beaten the game's first 'boss' (Unless you count one or two earlier boss-ish enemies), so I'll leave it for the night.

Love this game, love it ^_^

I think I've said this before, but I've never played PM either (or any of the later N64 games: moved on to the DC by then), so I'm looking forward to this. Dude, Paper Mario and Conker are my two favorite N64 games. They came out a month apart, I remember the day in February when I got Paper Mario, and then getting Conker's BFD in March. I loved those days.

You gotta play Bad Fur Day, dude.

Just got this and love it, its the first time ever playing it for me you see :D

I also got Air zonk and that is fantastic also.
I now have 4500 sitting there, waiting to be spent, hopefully on SF2 turbo when that is released.

Back to PM, i have one question, is it a long game?

Jazzem
13th July 2007, 09:03 PM
For you Jonny (And anyone else wondering), it should take around 25 hours on your first go, it did for me back in the day :)

It's definitely not as long as The Thousand Year Door on Gamecube, but it's an excellent length for a Virtual Console game, especially if you try to collect a lot of badges/star pieces/etc.

@ iNma: You ought to get a second hand copy of Conker, Live and Reloaded for the original Xbox, Conkers bad fur day was a great game but updated into those graphics will make it still seem veeeeeeeeeery enjoyable today.

Paper Mario: Wow, just wow... I downloaded this game the moment I heard it was out and bloody heck its brilliant, I missed something back then and now I get the chance to see what all the fuss was about. I need to get a second hand copy of the one on GC as I played it when I was really damn tired so I couldn't get into it but I like its humour, its style and pretty much everything. Best game on VC? pff, without a shadow of a doubt.

I have played The Thousand Year Door and must say I was not that impressed by the game not a bad game by any means but one I found to be very overrated 7.5/10.

Have not played the original.

It really is quite amazing how much people haven't played Paper Mario before. You're missing out on one of the greatest games for the N64 (If you ask me it's THE greatest game though), download it now if you haven't yet. Then when you beat it, hunt down The Thousand-Year Door if you don't have that either.

Dude, hell no. Bad Fur Day kicks Live and Reloaded's ass. I just can't explain it, you need to play the N64 one to experience it fully. The Xbox port took away all of the original's charm. Imagine playing Banjo-Kazooie for the first time on Xbox, it would suck.

I'm loving Paper Mario. It's funny though, having played Thousand Year Door (which is excellent) I think I can remember references in TYD to Paper Mario, but I might be making this up. I def recomend to anyone if they downloaded and are enjoying PM, get TYD in straight after you've finished!

I just managed to get the 1st star spirit back... that boss was quite funny!

I've been playing the game using a wavebird controller, is that likely to cause any problems later? Its just that I've noticed the "Z" button is mapped to the pad's "L" button for some reason....

antster1983

Press down on the right control stick of the Classic Controller (or down on the C-stick of the GameCube controller) and you can kick Kooper to hit blocks, enemies or switches, and to collect items.

Well I've never played this game. A lot of the vc games I've never played. The only n64 games I remember playing were super mario 64, mario party 1, 2 and 3, and bomberman. The only super nintendo games I remember are super mario world. So yah I really missed out. but once I get 1000 points I'd love to get paper mario. Because this game was like the creator of all rpg mario games, or was that super mario rpg.:mario-face

Really enjoying this. A heavy bout of insomnia over the weekend (I'm an insomniac at the best of times...this weekend was particularly bad) meant I could really get my teeth into it. It really is a tidy little game!

Only complaint (VERY minor) is the letter delivery sub-mission you go on. Frustrating and better be worthwhile.

Well, I prefer playing games at night because I know I won't get disturbed, I like to just relax when I'm playing. So my favourites I play 9-10PM upwards.

Just finished the Dry Dry Ruins last night and got the second star spirit, I want to finish it for SPM but I'm not getting my hopes up

Finished Crystal Palace (the last star spirit) last night. Love late nights on a bank holiday weekend!

Tempted to try and finish all of the stats before attempting Bowser...though I've only found 89/160 Star Pieces! Tayce T's recipes seem a bit pointless as well...keep on getting the 'mistake' made up.

Really enjoyable game but find that the complaint I had about the letter-delivery submission to be extended to the majority of others....Koopa Koot favours, radio station competition, etc...just running around the game world delivering things. Another thing...I never had a N64 so I'm not sure how the buttons are mapped. Can anyone tell me how to use Tidal Wave for Sushie? It requires pressing buttons in a certain order.

Some strong elements are the different methods required to defeat the bosses (each seems to challenge a different skill at Mario's disposal...strength, items, strategy, etc) and the use of the pipes to navigate around the game world. Also a big fan of the Dojo (got my Diploma!) and the playroom (although I've yet to win a game).

Well worth the download and I'm looking forward to finishing.

I'm currently sort of stuck at Shy Guy Toy Box at that Mini Boss/Boss (don't know:S) who holds the latern and keeps making it darker. He's not so bad, except the only way I've figured out to inflict damage on him is by using items or star spirit attacks, as jumping and the hammer only make it lighter. Plus, I can't even change to Bombette to try blowing im up because I have to keep Bow out to keep slapping him! Any ideas/really obvious things I've missed?!

By this point you should have a badge so you can switch partners without wasting your turn, you switch and attack in one turn, if you don't find it, otherwise keep Bow out at ALL times and use her slap and transparancy on Mario when needed, use all the power jumps and hammer moves you can to get 7-10 damage each hit. He should go down pretty easy, I had trouble on him too though.

Now I have 2 power plus badges :). I deffinetly need a lot more badge points to wear all these goodies :(.

SKTTR
5th September 2007, 01:13 PM
always raise the badge points!! until theyre maxed out!! i think you can have 30.
with badge points you win three prizes at once.

1st. You can fill these points with badges that raise HP, makes leveling up HP unnecessary until later.
2nd. You can fill these points with badges that raise FP. makes leveling up FP unnecessary until later.
3rd. You can fill these points with every other badge when necessary.

anyway, to make this strategy work, you have to find these specific badges.
there are at least four of each (i think 2x +5 and 2x +10) so you can raise your maxHP+30 and maxFP+30 just with badge points.
dont know where to find them. thats your job. i beat it (100%) 6 years ago and cant think of everything anymore.

Yeah, it is the same. You have 1 more upgrade of HP and FP than me, but I'm using 6/15 BP on badges to rise my HP and FP by 5 each, giving us the same amount.

I absolutely love a bunch of the VC games like Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, and they hold a lot of nostalgia value for me, but Paper Mario is definitely a strong contender for the best VC game.
I never played it before it arrived on VC, and I must say I was very surprised at how good it really is! This should be the first game on any person's VC shopping list.

completed this about a month ago. I was really excited about playing, never played a paper mario game before and always wanted to. However now I've played it I have to say I was a little disappointed. Let me take a moment and share with you my grievances.

I found it particularly aimed at kids, it was a very stripped down rpg and extremely simplified. I think the main thing about the system I found off putting was that you can only improve your attack power with badges or weapon upgrades (of which there are only 2 or 3 for each weapon; shoes and hammer). Which in theory works, but is pretty unsatisfying. It would have been better if you could upgrade your weapons more frequently, raising your attack power then they could have increased the difficulty of the enemies proportionally. With that changed they would also need to add some sort of better defence system, which would also be upgradeable. At the moment increases in defence again only come with badges.

The other problems I have with the game are relatively minor. I thought most of the music was good or satisfactory, but a couple tracks were positively repulsive. In particular the music of koopa village and when twink (who the hell thought of that name!?) comes down to speak to mario. They were like annoying nursery rhyme tunes that some pleb had remixed and managed to make even more annoying!

I also wondered why it was even 'Paper' mario. There is no actual reason for him to be made out of paper. I mean in the new one on the wii, it is actually part of the game mechanics. But in this one he might as well be three dimensional and they could have called it Mario RPG. Was it just to save on processing power?

The only other gripe was that most of the time bowser acted like a whiney spoilt *cat pseudonym*. I mean I don't mind when they make him a bit stupid but he should still be a mean *child with unmarried parents*!

Anyway, sorry to dump on you guys, I just don't know anyone one else in the tangible world that has played paper mario 64. All that said I did still enjoyed playing it and would recommend it to a friend. I would say though, take certain parts with a pinch of salt.

cheers
cook

There's one in Peach's castle, Peach can put items like badges in it for Mario to collect in the other one. (I think that's what you meant)

Last save time= 24:30ish
Ending time= Just over 25 hours.
Mario- Level 23
HP- 50
FP-45
BP-30

The game was actually pretty easy IMO, I never properly died once, most enemies were easily defeated bar boss 7 (because of healing) and the final boss.

I've somehow managed to get stuck in the 2nd area (in the big tree, where you see the big hoards of little things who batter Punio). Just feels like I've tried everything.

And no, it's not me getting stuck that's putting me off it. It's the masses of text which really drags on and the amount of mystery in the storyline compared to the first one, not to mention the fact I've played 35 hours odd of Paper Mario without a break now.

Maybe I should finish the tree then take a breather for a couple of months while I enjoy the flood of Wii games...
