View Full Version : My Wii is HOT!

So last nite I sat down to play w/ my Wii  & when I opened the entertainment center door where I have it kept, I noticed it was quite warm in there. So I touched the top of the Wii (I had it lying flat) & it was BLAZING HOT!! Like, it almost hurt my hand. So I turned it on so the fan would come on & set it upright so that it would have more exposed surface space in hopes that would cool faster.
After playing for about 20 minutes, it was an acceptable temp.. But I couldn't believe how hot it got when it wasn't even in use. Has anyone else noticed that? I may relocate somewhere it so that I can use the stand & have it sit upright (it fits awkwardly in my entertainment center like that) as I think that may alleviate the my heat concern. But I'm almost tempted to unplug it when I'm not using it if only to keep it from frying itself out. The entertainment center is reasonably ventilated so I don't think that's the real problem. Buy why would it get so hot if it's not even in use?
Weird...

Is it on standby, and more notably, in Wiiconnect24 when you're not using it? If it is, that's probably your answer, along with how tight a fit it has in your entertainment centre*!
If you want to keep it on Wiiconnect24 (With the orange LED), do what you plan to and put it in a more open space, so it can ventilate itself well.

Is it even possible to turn it off stand buy without messing with the plugs?

Hold down the power button on the Wii until the light goes red. That should do it.

I just turn wiiconnect off after I'm done downloading games, since I'm not using it for anything else.

Disabling "connection during stand-by" (or whatever it's called) is enough.

If you like to keep it on 24/7, I suggest getting a Wii intercooler.

It seems now that leaving your Wii on Stand By can cause your Wii to go faluty. The reason for this is when its on Stand by, the fan it switched off, thus getting very hot.
If you re worried about this, turn the Wiiconnect24 off.

Why are you all ignoring my message?
This is the solution.
Turning on your Wii, is all you have to do to take it online.

I've heard all the worrying stories of Wii consoles being damaged by getting too hot. I'm going to keep it off of WiiConnect24 this summer, things normally at risk of overheating always get even hotter in the summer and there is not much need for it yet anyway.
Hold down the power button on the Wii until the light goes red. That should do it.
You can change it in settings so it automatically goes to red. It doesn't get hot on standby once WiiConnect24 is disabled.
It's very un-Nintendo like it has to be said, Nintendo products are usuaully renowned for their reliability, so it's worrying to hear about Wii consoles overheating just through normal operation.

True, but better than an X360 overheating/corrupting its own OS/munching on your discs/etc.
But yeah, it is a worry, especially from a Nintendo console. I have mine unplugged most of the time it's not in use, mainly to save power, but partly because I noticed it getting warm (although never hot).

That's funny, I honestly don't have a problem with any of that. I mean, the Wii gets warm, yes, but not blazing. I've had no problems either. Perhaps its because I have mine in my basement rather than in a living room...it's generally about 5-10 degrees cooler down there than anywhere else in the house that's non-air conditioned.

The 3.0 patch should now start the fan if the temperature peaches too high. Good news :)

I'm glad the Wii is so flexible that an update can rectify problems such as this, which would usually be handled on a much lower hardware level. Nintendo have done a very good job here.

Eh? Issues such as erratic fan behavior has been dealt with via firmware updates on computers for quite some time. This is nothing new.
