Although it is only an amateur collection, I thought I'd post a couple of pictures of my shooter collection. Maybe a niche genre that only the most avid gamer pursues, but I enjoy hunting these games down to add to my gaming library. Perhaps you have some recommendations of your own?

Bear in mind, I also have the following via Wii VC and XBLA:

Virtual Console:
-Axelay (SNES)
-Blazing Lasers (TG-16)
-Super Star Soldier (TG-16)
-Soldier Blade (TG-16)

Xbox Live Arcade:
-Aegis Wing
-Ikaruga
-TriggerHeart Excelica
-Galaga

Comments or conversation around SHMUPS is welcome in this topic.

I'm to lazy to list all my Shmups I have, but some gems would be:

Cartridges (As of the PAL-VC, I have ALL Shmups).
Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius (SFC/J)
Star Soldier (GC/J)
Parodius (SNES/P)
Parodius (NES/P)
Ikaruga (GC/U)

Should I buy me Super Aleste (SNES/P) or (SFC/J), or both?

I won't list the various Homebrew shmups I have, even though they are brilliant, but other than that I have:

Ikaruga (GC)
Steel Empire (GBA)
Famicom Mini Volume 10: Star Soldier (GBA)
Geometry Wars Galaxies (NDS)

Quite a modest collection at the moment.

Things I don't own but would like to get:
Blast Works (Wii)
Trigger Heart Excelica (XBLA)
Milestone Shooting Collection (Wii)
Castle of Shikigami III (Wii)
Star Parodier (TG16/VC)
Shiro No Shikigami II (Gamecube)

and in my local XtraGame they have a Buy one Get one Free deal which includes Psyvarier and Silpheed on the PS2 for £9.99.

As well as the other ones mentioned, Bangai-O on Dreamcast.

Silpheed on the PS2
I have that on Mega CD, I didn't know there were other versions. Any good?

I'm not sure, but its only like £6.99 here.

I think they sold Psyvarier though.

Out of all the ones on VC, which is your personal favorite? I'm not a fan of the genre, but want to be.

Section-Z (NES)
Nanostray (DS)
Geometry Wars Galaxies (DS)
Twinbee Portable (PSP/jap)
Bio-Hazard Battle (MD)

Mushihimesama LE (PS2/jap)

Out of the ones on VC and if we're just talking about traditional shooters and not run and gun games like Gunstar Heroes. Air Zonk. Hardcore shooter fans may disagree with me as it's more of a casual game, but I like it.

I'll speak up for UN Squadron on the SNES. I have a lot of fond memories of that game. Unfortunately, it's not a likely candidate for the VC since it was based on an anime.

And since no one has mentioned it yet, I tried Gate of Thunder on the VC and found it to be an above average shmup. Personally, I enjoyed it more than the Thunder Force games I've played (which it seems to be imitating).

Speaking of Thunder Force, does this (http://tecnosoft.com) have any significance? Apparently, it's been that way since last January.

I forgot that I have some on the Capcom Classics Collection discs 1 & 2 and Taito Collection discs 1 & 2. I also aquired Castle Shikigami III (Wii) and R-Type Final (PS2) recently since making this thread. I will post some more pictures soon of my updated collection.

Great choice. I'm currently playing it over and over again just to see all the different scenarios. It's short, but excellent, at least in my opinion.

Everyone in this thread should check out Blast Works, if it is available in your region. The ability to create your own levels, whether they be horizontal or virtical, is really cool. Also you can make your own ship, enemies, bosses, and even shot patterns.

As for my collection, not including the VC, is:
Galaga(NES)
Gradius
Xevious
Zanac

Oh, yeah, I forgot the Capcom Generations 1-3 on PSX...and I got the Capcom Classics Collection 2 a few days ago.

Soldier Blade.

That game is amazing. It's the game that turned me on to SHMUP's.

First post, and on something that I hold very dear to me... SHMUPs! :D

I have over 150 shmups in my collection, highlights being:

Atari 2600: Chopper Command, Cross Force, River Raid
Commodore 64: Armalyte, Delta, IO, Sanxion, Uridium, Zybex
PC-Engine: Cyber Core, Galaga '88, Gunhed, Super Star Soldier
NES: Abadox, Burai Fighter, Metal Fighter, Zanac
SNES: Axelay, Super Aleste, Super R-Type, Thunder Spirits
Super Famicom: Blazeon, Marchen Adventure Cotton 100%, Phalanx
Dreamcast: Bangai-O, Border Down, Ikaruga, Zero Gunner 2
Megadrive: Biohazard Battle, Fire Shark, Gaiares, Thunderforce II, II & IV
Saturn: Game Paradise, Layer Section, Sexy Parodius
Neo Geo AES: Alpha Mission 2, Ghost Pilots, Last Resort
Playstation 1: RayCrisis, R-Type Delta, X2: No Relief
Playstation 2: Gradius V, Gunbird SP, Homura, R-Type Final, XII Stag

Plus I have Geometry Wars and Star Soldier R on the Wii, and a MAME cabinet with probably another 50 or so shooters including all the R-Types, 1942, Raiden etc.

Shmups are great because they can fill whatever gaming time you have available, be it 5 minutes or 5 hours!

I just bought Konami Arcade Classics (DS) containing Gradius and Twinbee (yeah, now I've got the original Twinbee in two portable renditions; one on PSP and DS each ^^), as well as R-Type Final (PS2). Been looking a long time for the latter one.

I may get the PSP collections of Twinbee and Parodius next year. And Star Soldier is lookin' mighty tempting. Anyone have any opinions on the PSP Star Soldier remake?

Is Ikaruga a top 5 in the shmup library? I'm going to buy it on GC just because I've seen many many people say its fantastic. I'm not a huge shmup fan, but I figure Ikaruga I can always resell on ebay, but I would love to find a truly epic shmup i could play over and over.

Although I don't really have a lot of them, SHMUPs are one of my favorite genres.

I'll list what I have.

NES: 1943
Sega Master System: After Burner, Chop Lifter, Space Harrier (not sure if these count as SHMUPS, but they are similar.)
TurboGrafx-16: R-Type, Raiden, Psychosis, Blazing Lazers
SNES: Darius Twin
Genesis: Thunder Force III
Sega Saturn: Darius Gaiden
VC: Gates of Thunder, Soldier Blade

Want to get more, including (in no particular order)...
Giga Wing 2 Dreamcast, Einhander PS1 (again, a friend of mine borrowed and lost it), Raiden 3 PS2, Hellfire Genesis, Truxton Genesis, M.U.S.H.A. Genesis, Robo Aleste SegaCD, Lifeforce NES, Ikaruga Gamecube, Wing Arms Sega Saturn, and Gunbird 2 Dreamcast.

For the PS1, you forgot Einhander. I hear it's a classic, so I'll probably pick up a PS1 and this game too; much cheaper than getting a PS3 and downloading the game! :D
