View Full Version : Metroid worth a try if I never played the NES version?

Since it came out a week or so ago I was thinking about getting this, however I have only played Super Metroid on the SNES, and I never played the NES version.
How hard is the NES version for someone who has never played it?

Metroid is harder than Super Metroid because
1 - No map and many places look the same. (Draw your own map or have a good memory)
2 - There are no weapon/energy restorage rooms. (You need more skills)

Super Metroid is more developed in every way that is possible. Metroid started a great franchise but the game itself isn't that good. But if you have some money to spare it could be good fun to see where it all started.
If you got Metroid Prime you can unlock the first Metroid if you link MP with Metroid Fusion, so if that's a possibility for you I suggest that you do that instead.
And it takes a while to get used to, everytime you start off with a new game or loading (with an annoying password) an existing game you will start off with 30 energy. On the later levels that isn't too much, so you nearly must complete the game within one go.

But since he wants it on Wii he wouldnt have any problem with
passwords/saving/30 energy restart. Except if he dies. ^^

Besides, Metroid on VC is not really worth it when you could get it by connecting Metroid Fusion with Prime or by unlocking it in Metroid Zero Mission.
My recommendation? Get Metroid Zero Mission if you can find it anywhere. Or, if you're low on cash, just buy Super Metroid.

It's very easy with a walkthrough and if you download a map. But if you really want to get the most out of it and tackle it on your own you'll need to draw a map as you go, really explore the levels to the full and it won't be easy. It's a great game, I really recommend it no matter what, but it all depends how much time and effort you're willing to invest in a NES game.

This :)
Although it's quite fun to play the NES one and see what it's like, Zero Mission takes the game's structure, makes it a lot less confusing and polishes the game in general. I'd go for that, and then after you complete it, you get the NES game anyway! (Although I can understand why you'd want it on the VC, but I'd recommend just going for Zero Mission anyway)

Oh no no no no no, get it on the vc!!
Its much better!! On a big screen!!
Not on a GB or DS one, its not like how it was meant to be played.

Not the NES Metroid, but Zero Mission was ;)
But he's right, the ZM one is less detailed because of the small screen.

I put my session with the NES Metroid on hold. I've made quite some headway, and I've drawn out a quite detailed map. I'm just having trouble figuring out where to go now, but I refuse to look at a guide, map, etc. I'll probably pick it up again after I've finished MP3.
I find the original a lot of fun, none the less. Now that's what I call exploring. ;)

No no no way. Zero Mission is much more enjoyable, hands down.
If you really want to try the NES game, I'd recommend to get Metroid Prime 1 since it includes Metroid 1 as an extra, running at 60Hz even if you're using a PAL system (unlike the VC version).

Metroid starts out a little easier than Super Metroid but in the later levels, it gets harder. Fast. And also, like SKTTRBRUISE said, there are no maps in this game.
Throughout all of this, I still recommend you buy the game. It is really great fun, just like its sequels.

Yeah, I own like 2 copies of Metroid, one for the VC and one for the GBA. I thought I lost my GBA copy which is why I downloaded it. I always get into thinking that...
"This time I'm pushing through until I beat it."
But, I always get lured back to Metroid Zero, which is such a better version of the game. Zero is clearly the game they wanted to make, but couldn't because of the limitations of the NES. The GameBoy Metroid 2 game is more advanced than the NES one.

Zero Mission was way to easy for me. I finished it the 3rd day I got it. The original is very fun and challenging. But I just played Super Metroid for about a minute but it seems fun. You might want to get Super Metroid or Zero Mission if you are new to the series.
