Other than Shinobi, I'm not really interested. I never really liked Sega's games that much.

Japan get it next month not us. But maybe this new system will make nintendo give us three games again. (or for Europe 2)

Great. So not only is Nintendo releasing games with the speed of a herd of stampeding turtles, but now they are adding a crappy system to the mix. If anything, they should have went after true arcade versions of games.

The Master System alone has over 200 titles, so that should be plenty for everyone. ;)

No, the N64 was added a long time ago.

 I was just about to make that same joke (but with the NES instead of N64) but decided not to.

The Master System is very worthy of being on VC.

Perhaps I'd get soem of the Wonderboy games that weren't released/re-released on other systems on the vc, But many is that?

Also, Alex Kidd? I could get the good one(s)...

Who put the name "Master System/Game Gear" in the new subforum?

They're not releasing any Game Gear (or portable, for that matter) games on the Wii's VC, and they don't seem to have any future plans for it, at the moment.

Its true. Game gear games are coming to VC. It was announced that game gear games would be released on Virtual console and will be put under the master system category.

I can't find the sources to that info, can somebody please link to an official announcement or something?

Besides, putting GameGear games under a "Master System" cathegory doesn't make much sense, in my oppinion...

Cant find any official sources. And if any of these are official i just havent realised :

VC : Reviews - "The first new Virtual Console channel of 2008 has been confirmed and Sega fans should be rejoicing as it's the 8-bit Master System that will be getting the VC treatment. Game Gear software will also to be released under the same channel (which makes sense as technically the two consoles shared the same technology)."
http://www.vc-reviews.com/news/2008/01/japanese_virtual_console_list_february_2008

Nintendo Wii Fanboy : "Awesome news for people who love 8-bit games, or just wonderful things: Sega Master System games will be offered on the Japanese Virtual Console starting in February, with other territories to follow. It looks like the base price for games will be 500 points, with the customary 100 tacked on for licenses. Sega Mark III games and even Game Gear games will be offered for download -- marking the first handheld games available through the VC, all thanks to the Game Gear and the Master System using identical hardware."
http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/01/25/segaton-master-system-games-on-the-vc-next-month/

Joystiq : "The beauty part is that, since it used the same hardware as the Master System, Game Gear games will also have a shot at VC fame. The first entries will be Fist of the North Star for 600 points and Fantasy Zone for 500 points. They'll only be rolling out to Japan at first in February, but look for other territories to follow close behind."
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/25/sega-master-system-games-coming-to-virtual-console/

1-Up : "IGN reports that the first Master System games (Fantasy Zone and Fist of the North Star) will show up in Japan in February, and to follow in Europe and America. The report goes on to state that games will also be offered from the Mark III (the predecessor to the Master System) and the Game Gear (the full-color, battery-draining answer to the original Game Boy). So next time you feel insulted when someone rags on your console of choice, remember that "console wars" aren't new, and sometimes old rivals can work together. Sort of puts things in perspective."

well, it DOES make sense cause the Game Gear IS a portable Master System(Hardware wise).

No, the Game Gear is more powerful than the Master System. It's based on it, but it's not the same thing (both use a different color system and games aren't directly compatible between them, for example).

That's almost like saying the Game Boy is the same as the NES. There were NES adaptors to use the Game Boy games, but that doesn't mean they're the same system.

Sonic 1 and 2 are great. Can't wait for Rainbow Islands!! Was much better than the arcade version. Want to try the Alex Kidd games. You never know, we could see Ghostbusters to go with the Wii game?

Actually, you can play any Master System game on the Game Gear, with a handy converter, which you plugged into the top of your Game Gear. The actual hardware was very, very cheap, so the Game Gear must have done all the work eh?

And from what I understand, the Game Gear and Master System were actually exactly the same, but the screen on the Game Gear had limited colours. Games designed for the Game Gear only used the certain colours, but "ports" of master system games were simply put onto a compatible cartridge, and sent to the display the same was as MS, but displayed funny. Hence why in The Incredible Crash Dummies, the GG version the character appears to wear purple clothes :P. Although saying that, the first level of 8-bit Sonic is different between the two consoles...

Same happened with the MegaDrive and SMS, and the MD is quite a bit superior...

The GG supported more simultaneous on-screen colors.

look at the specs, the game gear is technically the same.

Also, the Mega Drive had the hardware to support backwards compatibility, while the game gear was clearly too small to conceal hidden hardware to support extra backwards compatibility.

The Game Gear had a colour palette of 4096, while the Master System had 64, but the Game Gear could only hold 32 colours on screen at one time, while the Master System could hold the full 64.

The Game Gear's CPU was a varient of the Master System's Zilog Z80. This processor was a co-processor in the Mega Drive, allowing Master systems to be played with a converter, but this CPU was only used for this and not normally used.

The Game Gear is pretty much an improved NTSC Master System in a much smaller case, built in screen and runs on 6 AA batteries :P

The Master System has a higher resolution though, making it much better for VC than Game Gear. Game Gear games look awful on a TV screen, as we saw in Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Gems Collection.

The GG supported more simultaneous on-screen colors.I thought both supported the same simultanious colours, but the Game Gear had a bigger colour palette.

yeah I think that's right, but from what I understand there was a sort of exploit on the Master System where the programmer could use 64 colours on the screen at once, and this was frequently used in games... but not GG.

Made evident by playing The Incredible Crash Dummies on the GG, the little man appears the same colour as parts of the wall in the first level (only example I can think of off the top of my head)

But yeah both were officially limited to 32 colours on the screen at once

Oh, and when someone made a GG title, they obviously wouldn't go overboard with the pixels, because GG titles were not intended to be shown on a telly (until the later Sonic compilations) - but more than half were ports of MS games and were just transferred onto the smaller, newer cartridges :)

Hence why my GG's batteries run dry after like an hour of playing an originally MS title lol, but several hours on a GG title!

Pretty weird really. You'd have thought with the amount of money Sega were raking in at the time, they could have gone all out with the Game Gear. But saying that, if they already had a pre-existing 8 bit system being shadowed by the main 16 bit console, it makes sense to have based their handheld console on the 8 bit system.. no need to pay programmers overly much, and there was the literally thousands of Master System games already available on the market!

But comparing the Game Gear to the Master System is like comparing the Nomad to the Mega Drive!

There are plenty of great games for the Master System. I still have it and almost 100 games. Phantasy Star, Fantasy Zone, Fantasy Zone II, Hang-On, World Grand Prix, Great Golf, Parlour Games, Captain Silver, Rocky, and many more.

I've got a Master System II with Alex Kidd built in. Probably the best game I've ever played on the system!

Sega Master System is their home console before Genesis. Game Gear is their portable system.
