So there have been a few topics skirting this issue already, but I just fired off my order for Mario Strikers Charged, and hopefully that puppy should be arriving on Saturday.

Game's awesome, and an enormous improvement over the original game (Which, face it, was severely lacking with stadiums and single player features). Also gone is the hideous idea of unlocking cheats by performing tasks a huge amount of times (1000 Super Strikes to unlock one of them I think).

Also very nice are the new dekes, Skillshots, MegaStrikes (Which unlike Super Strikes can actually be blocked), the differences between captains, stadium events, kickass music (Though the original's sudden death music did kick ass), and more.

Getting it tomorrow morning. I'll be part exchaninging Mario Kart DS (gathering dust for months) and Wario Ware Smooth Moves (completed) for it, so i don't expect to be paying much for the game at all, a tenner at the very most.

If anyone's interested, consolegaming.eu have a 1v1 ladder for this game. Anyone who's used GameBattles before will know about how ladders work, but if you want a more competitive ladder, then I highly recomend the site. I've signed up and started sending out challenges for next week.

That's good to hear. I never liked the cheat stuff in the original. Its sounds like its really awesome. I can't wait for July to come! :D

Well, this is not entirely true. I played some singleplayer yesterday, and by completing the striker challenges you unlock cheats, which are only available in Domination luckily.

The first one I unlocked though was classic mode, which lets you play Domination without Mega and Super Strikers and all that. Which is actually something worthwhile. Just a shame they called it the Classic Mode Cheat, which gives it a bad taste, as a post to just You unlocked the Classic Mode.

Anyone else having trouble connecting to the online matching service?

I've no Wii connection problems with my router usually, and the DS connects to the Nintendo WFC and runs games without a second thought. I had a game earlier today, which was fun, but every time I've tried to connect since, I get an error, code 98020, saying the connection was terminated furing data transfer. So no online matches for me. However, the Internet Channel and the connection test work fine, which makes it unlikely to be a ports problem...

An idea, anyone?

Charged is having numerous issues with online right now, it seems. I'm getting that damn error from yesterday again. They're probably trying to upgrade the servers to deal the flood of new players.

What error exactly is it that people are getting? The posts yesterday suggested that the problem was the "Cannot get stats" error, but what I'm experiencing is another error: I log in, and just as the Getting statistics screen appears, it throws up a screen saying "Error 98020, disconnected from network during data transmission". Is this consisten with other people's experience?

Nah, I was just checking; it stood to reason that if my error message differed from that of other people, I mihgt have a port problem, and it would be wise to get cracking with fixing it prior to the servers actually going back up. I have a BT Home Hub, which most people in the UK will know about. Short story, don't, under any circumstances, get one if you can avoid it.

As for Strikers itself, I had an online game earlier today, and it was brilliant. 4-star connection rating meant essentially no lag, and the games were even and enjoyable. Not having played the GCN game at all, this is my first taste of Mario football, and so far I'm impressed. The difficulty in getting the special strikes just right and the ability to block them with the remote make it much more skill based than Mario Power Tennis's idiotic Power moves.

I agree with you both...nothing more infuriating. I was 3-0 down, turned it around to a win in sudden death via a megastrike and the moment he missed a save the !$@£er switched out. :evil:

It's now official...I'm so disillusioned with DC'ers that I'm ONLY going to play those that register me or through the ladder that Tennant just posted.

I'm average at this game to say the least. I've taken more 9-0 beatings that I've had 2-0 wins. I'm not ashamed of that...it's a fun game and I've learned loads from watching dudes much better than me whip my backside.

So when I FINALLY seemed to be getting a big win and the B@$£@£* switched out I went a little crazy! So enough of this rubbish...you guys start registering me and letting me know when you fancy a game. We, in fact, should organise a VCA tournament!

Apparently it's limited to regions for ranked matches, but friendlies are wide open.

Finally got it. Yay! It's a fun game. =) I only played for about five hours straight or so. =/

There's only one stadium I don't like: Crystal Caverns. Losing random members certainly isn't that great. On the bright side, I love the stadiums with throngs of onlookers. Makes the game seem very alive. Much more alive than any other soccer/football game I've seen, and I've seen quite a few. I'm still not sure what kind of niggle some reviewers have with the graphics. They look rather nice, and they work for me. Guess that's because I've never had exceptional high standards like some.

Most of the games I've played so far were online matches, of which only a couple in the beginning lagged, but otherwise I had pretty much smooth sailing... and only one disconnect from another player - guess he didn't like that I scored four megastrike goals off the bat, even though he won the previous match. Otherwise, I've really had no problem with other players. My win ratio is at about the level I expected - 1:2. I'm fine with that. Had a lot of fun and tense matches, that's for sure... especially the ones that drew out into sudden death, some of which went up to about six minutes at times.

Some small niggles that cropped up. The beginning scene of a match can be quite repetitive. I found a positive side to it, though, in that it gives me time to flex my hands, which tend to cramp a bit when playing (but only in this game =/). The Hammer Bros can seriously **** me off. It's a bit of a pain trying to time it right to take them down with their hammer deke move. And, for a while, there were too many Mario players - seemingly only chosen because Super Mario gives them a much easier time at getting a mega strike. Lame. Personally, I like Peach a lot because she's so nimble.

Anyways, I've had a great night with the game. It may not be a masterpiece, but it sure is a great big bundle of fun. =)

Played some more, and still on average most players don't disconnect.

I'm definitely getting a bit better at the controls. Hammer Bro is not as tough, anymore, but still a pain at times. Also, I found that I prefer Daisy's moves over Peach. A princess with attitude. Heh.

Anyways, maybe at one point we could try and see if an international match works or not.

After a week of playing, my opinion still stands: MSC is a fun game, but it is no masterpiece. I stopped caring about ranking once I found out that the ladders get wiped every week, making them kind of pointless in my eyes. I think at least one month would have been better. That doesn't stop some people from playing over five hundred games, though. Guess some don't have anything else to do. =/

That said, it's still very enjoyable; much more than playing against the rather formulaic AI (as usual). My winning ratio is about 2:1, the opposite from when I started. I really don't care so much about winning, instead a good game is all I want. There's plenty of those to be had. I've taken a rather casual attitude towards the game now. There are still the odd disconnecters, but I'm not too worried about it. I thought it rather funny that in one game I was able to counter my opponent's cheap tactics with a goal each time. He apparently couldn't take anymore after 5-0. Heh.

And for the first time ever I actually intentionally disconnected myself. That was the lamest game I've played so far of any Wi-Fi game I've played. All he could do is use his one Hammer Bro... over... and over... again. Sure, I stole the ball away plenty of times, but he did it so much it was inevitable he would score with this cheapest of tactics. So I pulled the plug; no point being stuck in a game that is no fun at all and in which my opponent shows no skill whatsoever.

I've also changed my mind about Crystal Canyon. I actually like it now how it mixes things up. I also very much enjoy Thunder Island (it's always fun to watch players fly off the field) and Stormship Stadium (mmm, fried players!). Of the more regular stadiums I prefer The Vice and Classic: Underground just because of their look, obviously. But I loathe The Wastelands. All that sliding around makes for truly inaccurate controls.

It's also nice that the server issues have been fixed a few days after release.

All in all, I'd give the game an 8 out of 10.

I picked this up yesterday and am enjoying it a lot. I haven't played any mario soccer games in the past but I think I am starting to get the hang of it. I figure I'll be competitive sometime this weekend if anyone wants to play.

I also got this for my Bday over the weekend along with Trauma Center. I don't know if I would have got this if it was up to me (it was a gift) but I decided to keep it and give it a try because the people who got it for me put some thought into it since they knew that I play soccer and like Mario.

My review score: 6/10
note: I have not played this online (no internet @ home) and I have not played it as much as Trauma Center.

liked: simple arcade gameplay is fun, characters are classics, controls are spot on in my opinion

disliked: mega strikes (don't seem like they belong), character colors, Miis in the game as sidekicks would have been cool, I can see myself getting tiried of this quicker then most games
