View Full Version : Mario Kart 64 speed issues in multiplayer?

Anyone had any speed issues with MK64 on VC?

Mine seems to be running super-quick compared to 1-player when I'm playing in multiplayer mode. Before I re-download it on the offchance that fixes it (although I'd be surprised a data glitch wouldn't just crash it), has anyone else experienced this or know how to fix it?

Cheers,
Al.

I have always assumed that the splitscreen gives a false sence of speedboost, not sure im talking about the same thing :p

How wierd. The original had the exact opposite problem, as the N64 wasn't capable of keeping up the framerate. Perhaps the engine was made to intentionally run faster to counter the speed loss (so it would run at a decent speed in the N64), but the Wii makes it move faster because it won't slow down.

I hope they release a patch for it, if it's really a problem like that. Can you make a video capture for comparison, please?

I'm sorry to say I wouldn't have the first clue how to do that! :(

If it was a frame rate update, would that affect everything? I.e. the speed issues affect the speed of the start countdown and everything...

Also, sometimes it only happens on a particular course, especially the moo-moo farm one. Other times, it affects everything. Also, it only affects the races, not battle mode.

Good job I'm a fan of battle mode, eh? :D

I have experienced the speed issue, but it only happens sometimes. It seems to happen in Multiplayer mode only though, but I felt that after it occured, the songs and selections in the menus went faster too :S

Usually it have dissappeared after resetting the games a couple of time though.

Have a look on Youtube. There were quite a few captures made of this back when it was first discovered. It's a bizarre glitch.

Have you guys contacted Nintendo about this? If not, you can complain here as much as you want, but nothing will ever be done to fix it...

Fair point, but no-one was really complaining, just discussing. ;)

It's not really a big issue, but I think I'll get in touch with them anyway. Would be nice if they could either (a) fix the bugs and release a patch or (b) give me another 1000 Wii points. Ideally both! :D

I'll write to them tomorrow and see what happens.

it happened to me a few times on multi player, its really strange, like the games on fast forward. my eyes bugged out a bit thinking my Wii is falling apart. but resetting the game seemed to fix the problem.

im so glad its not just me with this problem though. i can sleep alittle easier now knowing its just the emulator thats alittle glitchy.

Just FYI, I've send a quick e-mail to Ninty customer services in the UK. I've kept it quite civil to just find out if there's a patch coming up, but if not I'll have to point out that I've pretty much wasted £7 on a game which is dodgy at best in the mode that I bought the game for... ;)

I have the original mario kart on the N64 and i also have speed issues with multiplayer. You drive faster when your driving with another on split screen, but espacially in Bowser's castle. So maybe it's normal that you drive faster in multiplayer.

it's always been like this, isn't a bug or a glitch or anything, was exactly the same on the N64, i think it just does it on certain tracks for a laugh on multiplayer, to make it more intresting and catch you unawares, is always great fun when you've been playing moo moo farm for a bit and suddently it starts and it's rediclously fast!
I've always thought it was done on purpose to make multiplayer more fun, since it doesn't effect single player or time trials, but if it is a glitch i don't want it fixed!!!

I dunno, I personally think it makes it practically unplayable!

Well, that was unnecessary (and grammatically appalling, too). I'm not sure I agree that it's intentional, otherwise it'd happen every time. But I'm not going to argue with you, lest you start whining again for no apparent reason.

This is a games forum. I post messages about games. If you don't like that, go hang out in a forum about, I don't know, monkeys or something instead... :monkey:

Jeez.

Well said alex :) I've been asking this guy some stuff in his unnecessary threads, but he's yet to reply back. Maybe he should go...

This is a somehow important topic about something that should be looked into (we might be getting faulty products we're paying for).

So you might want to go away, if you don't like this kind of (interesting) topics.

I know this thread is about the speed glitch on multiplayer but I just want to know if you guys have music when you are racing. The only thing I ear is the sound effects and its kind of boring without the music.

Thanks

Yes on multiplayer you can't hear much music. But the speed change for me is just slightly faster than single player, not a big difference. Oh and Is everyones kart the same speed?

Yeah, everyone's kart is the same speed. Everything speeds up, even the sequence of the lights at the start.

It always seams like everyone is faster than me. What i really hate about this game is that the mushrooms don't even work.

It certainly can seem that way. The level of handicapping for the leaders is huge in MK64. The number of games where I've stormed into the lead on lap one and have all of a sudden been overtaken on the last corner despite running a faultless race is staggering. My personal preference now is to make sure I'm last for the first lap to get the cool power-ups, then about 3rd-4th on lap 2, then once someone blue-shells the leader on lap 3, go for the win. Makes life a lot easier! :)

I can shed some light on this. Basically MK64 runs at 30 fps. However in multiplayer the original console couldn't sustain this framerate. So Nintendo made it skip frames, so the console was rendering less frames per second but it would show the game at the proper speed.

But the Wii is more powerful so in multiplayer it can still render a solid 30fps, but because the game is still skipping frames the game runs faster than its meant to.

Also there is no music in multiplayer in the original title presumably for performance issues.

Oh yeah. 4-player always runs faster than normal.
