One developer Treasure's greatest and well known hits. A fan favorite classic side scrolling shooter. Many of you know the game and love it. Originally a Sega Genesis/MegaDrive cartridge, and it is now available on the Wii Virtual console. What made this game so much fun? What memories do you have of playing this game? What made it great for you? Do you still play it now?
As a secondary note in this topic, were you aware that there was a Gameboy Advance pseudo-sequel/remake? Titled Super Gunstar Heroes, it was more shooting greatness that only Treasure could deliver. What about the Playstation 2 port? Yes, Gunstar Heroes is available on the Playstation 2, but only in Japan, as a part of their Sega Ages series of games.
I just recently purchased said PS2 Import, and I must say it is an awesome edition of the game. For starters, it has four versions of the game selectable: Japanese MegaDrive, USA Genesis, a Prototype pre-release version, and the Sega GameGear version. Also, you can choose to display the game in 480p Progressive Scan mode, complete with anti-flicker, and graphics smoothing options. Once I turned these options on, and set the version to USA Genesis, I enjoyed what was undoubtedly the best looking Gunstar Heroes playthrough I'd ever experienced.
Of course, this requires a PS2 with Component cables, an HDTV, and a swap disc and part kit to enable Imports to play on your PS2. While having the Wii Virtual console release of this game is nice, I must recommend the PS2 version to all Gunstar fans who have the setup necessary to play imports on their PS2s. At $30, its a no brainer, and any die-hard fan would want the game looking as best as it possibly can.
The GBA title is also very good, and can still be found at some stores marked down as low as $10. I recommend grabbing it as well before it skyrockets on ebay in a few years. You know how hard the original Genesis cart is to get ahold of these days...
