View Full Version : Game saves

I just downloaded my first four games, but I don't quite get how it works. Kirby seems to save my game with in itself and return me to where I left off.
But ninja gaiden and other games save my progress and keep me at a level until it's beaten and it seems to vary on the game. Could someone please explain this?

The VC saves games in two ways.
A game like Zelda that has an in-built save will allow you to use that feature.
All VC games "save" your position when you exit the game, and unless you pressed the reset button on the VC option screen, you pick up from where you left off last time. So if you get to level 4 of Super Mario Bros (for example), then press the Home button and go back to the Wii Menu, the next time you load up Super Mario Bros, you'll pick up from where you left off.
(This is handy for games with a high score table because you can finish them then the next time you load up the game, your high score is still there, which wasn't the case back on the original releases.)
I think that when you press the reset button on the Home menu, it acts as if you pushed the reset button on the real console, so if it's a game like Zelda that has in-built saves, those are still active.
I hope that's all clear. If not, let me know.

You're bang on Kelvin. I had some trouble after completeing SMW and had to reset from the end screen. The game still remembered my last save point.

Also, don't forget that N64 games do not support the "Home saving".

I haven't got any N64 games yet (still waiting for Mario Tennis!), so I wasn't aware of that. I assume that if the game itself has a save feature, that still works?

Of course, but Memory Pak related saves (Mario Kart 64's ghost datas) will not work at all.

Okay, that's everything covered then!

I'm pretty sure I tried to cheat the Home Save thing on a game and just turned off my Wii so I could return to where I was before, and it saved where I turned the machine off.
Mind you, I think it was putting it on stand-by rather than unplugging it, if it makes a difference.

So if I download zelda oot I can only save it using the in game save, not with the home save?

Entirely correct.
Thankfully, the save is instant like on N64, compared to the three-second black screen on both GCN releases.
Too bad it's usually a long walk to get to wherever you're going when you start the game...

another quick question not quite a save issue, but what determines what level you will start at after you die in ninja gaiden.

Everything you guys have posted here is spot-on. There's one hitch, however.
When beating SMB1 and therefore enabling hard mode, a feat I admit I myself have never accomplished (I'm lame, I know, but my friend did on my system), I have not been able to revert back to easy mode so I might have a chance against it.
I tried hitting Home => Reset. But resetting the NES after beating SMB1 retains the 'hard mode' for some reason, and Im still fighting beetles instead of koopas.

The fact that starting over from scratch would be to evil.

Can you ellaborate on these "both GCN releases"?

You respawn in the level you died in. When you die on last boss you respawn at lastworld-1.

Damn evil.
