Just downloaded this overlooked little gem.
Just? It was 5 hrs ago and I played it with a friend until now in 2player co-op.

I don't know why I gave Gain Ground a chance, but somehow I always wanted to try this out. And now that I have, I'm glad I did because this game is absolutely cool. We've been to stage 5-9 on 'Normal'.

good points:

+20 different characters, each with two special weapons (in the beginning you start out with three main characters but soon you can add more and more characters to your party)

+50 action packed and well designed stages, with cool different themes, many different enemies, traps and other addictive obstacles.

+good music.

+every enemy has his own AI.

+2 player co-op is really enjoyable and one of the best on the VC. 5/5
One player is just half the fun. 2.5/5

Absolutely underrated! A great discovery.
Yeah maybe it's underrated for it's one player experience.
But originally it was an arcade game with co-op for up to 3 players.
This game has to be played at least with two players to grasp it's excellence.

You see the little captive? Take him to the exit and he will join your party.
Destroy all enemies or get to the exit with all your characters to move on to the next stage.
You can select which party member you want to choose next at the beginning at each level, when you reach the exit and when you die.

In the arcade you should try a warrior with a spear. He can throw it over the arcade machines.
Look at the character pic. It says "M" (medium). This is a weapon that can be thrown/shot over obstacles.
You need a weapon with "H"(high) to shoot things on top of houses. "L" (low) is best used to kill everything on ground.

Endboss fights bring up the tension a little, but with a bit of thinking which character to choose and staying at the bottom of the screen it's really easy.
There's also a time limit, but 200 seconds in each level, that should be enough to clear one screen of enemies. If your time is up all the characters that didn't made it to the exit are lost.

5 / 5 Stars

It's fun, but a bit short (You were right before the last stage) and Hard mode isn't too much different, plus I'd say Hard mode is easier if you're careful. I'd give it 4/5 myself. Music is fantastic btw.

If it is one of your bro's favourite games you already have a co-op partner! This game is a blast with a friend.

Well, I recommend this game to everyone who needs a game for 2 players.

The arcade game was also ported to the Turbografx CD and the Sega Master System.

Gain Ground SX (Turbografx CD) - with CD music, bonus levels and scrolling up/down.

Gain Ground (Master System) - with bad music, retro style and altered level design.

Yay someone else notices how great this game is. I first played it on Sega Megadrive Collection for PS2 and its a great game (Especially on 2-player). People really shouldnt over look this game. Its one of the most fun, addictive, Challenging games out there. Ive also tried the Sega Master System version which is also fun. Im considering trying to find and buy the cart and the Master Gear Converter for my GG.

EDIT : And looking at the previous posts i have to agree that the music is great. I still got the tune from the first area in my head.
