I spent ages wondering what all the hype was about for this game, and I didn't even have any clue what it was. I assumed because so many imported it wasn't gonna be released here for some reason, but I just found out it is so I searched it on Youtube, and it looks great!

I had no clue it was a rhythm game, and from what I've seen it looks really fun!

I'd import but there's no point as it's so close to release now.

Roll on 13th July 8)

BTW, when did you guys get it in America?

If I may give a suggestion, I reccomend you the Japanese version. I only saw this one and it's incredibly funny. Music tracks and other things have been changed...

Mendez

Yeah, but won't it all be in Japanese? Personally I prefer to understand my games :P
I'll just stick with the PAL one 8)
Thanks for the suggestion though!

I believe both Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan games have minimal text, so knowledge of Japanese isn't really necessary. I'm importing them this week after a long wait.

I've read so many great things about both Ouendans as well as the localisation of Beat Agents (which from what I gather is almost a new game). It's definitely on my list of must-buys, but yesterday I ordered both Final Fantasy III and Puzzle Quest, and GC Alien Hominid arrived the day before, so I'm going to hold off on this for a little while :D

That's pretty harsh.

It's not like there's tons of text to translate either, is there?

Acunia

actually most european games do have multi-language and yes that is on of the reasons why games come later over here, tho not by much sins there are other bigger reasons for them to get a later release

also you should look at the bright side of this, most systems/games have enough time out in the US or Japanese market to get some or most unknown bug addressed and fixed before the European release.

anyway, I like EBA and even tho i do enjoy the music from Ouendan more then the music from EBA and Ouendan2, there is no denying that EBA and Ouendan2 have better gameplay mechanics (well duh, heh)
EBA is a good game and you should atleast give it a try, and if you have the option then you should import Ouedan2 which isn't that much different from EBA other then the language difference :P, they do act and play the same, Ouendan2 having a slightly better graphics and effects, but not by much.

PS: 4player WiFi is awesome

I have both Ouendan's and EBA, and they're all great games, but I prefer EBA (just) over the first Ouendan, I've not gotten into the sequel as much as I thought I would do.
Trust me, you don't need to be able to understand Japanese to enjoy this game - the only Japanese games I've ever played are both Ouendans and Daigasso! Band Brothers (another essential rhythm game).

I'll probably be getting it if I really enjoy Elite Beat Agents, which I probably will :P

I got Ouendan 2 from PlayAsia, they sent it pretty quick too.
Personally (and I'm on my own here out of my group of friends), I rank EBA as the best, then the original Ouendan and finally the sequel.
But like I say, most people seem to prefer Ouendan over EBA - I suppose it depends on your music taste. I just didn't think the songs on Ouendan 2 were up to the standard of the first one. Still a great game though!

They had 2 pre-owned imported copy's in CEX for £35 each today, bit of a rip-off though considering it's out in 2 weeks. Hpoefully it'll arrive from Gameplay the day before launch, I can't wait to play it >_<

So, I've had Ouendan 1 and 2 for about a week now. I'd say I like 1 the most. EBA comes out next friday, can't wait.

While 2's music is, overall, a bit worse than the first, it does have some great ones (Though they take a while to grow on you if you ask me). My favourites from both games are:

1: Guts da ze!!, Melody, Linda Linda, Kokoro Odoru, Thrill, Taisetsu na Mono, One Night Carnival, Shanghai Honey
2: Zenryoku Shonen, Pop Star, Vista, Shonen Heart, Bambina, Zoku, Music Hour, Monkey Magic, Samurai Blue

Ah, only five more days until Elite Beat :D (I feel rather daft for not importing it, but no point now. Plus, it'll get me stars!)

I love Ouendan, a lot. The first one I picked up in March this year, and before long I was whiling away at the game past midnight on weekdays. What a game =D I'm happy to say I love the sequel as well, the music is still memorable and good fun ("Don't let me down, my sweet baby!").

Ossu!

I'm still unsure about importing 2. Play-Asia put it down to £20, but it's mysteriously gone straight back to £25 after a day.
I've only heard about 3 songs from it properly and they sounded alright, I liked Bambina.
It's all the Japanese text and stuff I don't think I'd like. I just hate not being able to understand stuff >_<

Jazzem
8th July 2007, 08:25 PM
I wouldn't worry about that. Although I do sometimes wonder what the characters say (Not much on the first Ouendan though, I found a translation FAQ on GameFAQs :D), but you'll be able to understand the stories pretty easily (Apart from one rather strange one on Ouendan 2, which is inspired by an old Japanese folk tale).

Incomprehensible text is a small price to pay for playing the DS's best game if you ask me =D

Keep at it, it's a game you really do improve at over time. Since I've gone onto Elite Beat after the two Ouendans, I'm halfway through Hard (After doing normal to easy, I always do it in that order), and have only had one Game Over, which was a very clumsy moment on my behalf.

Obviously you're on the demo there, but buy the full game! :D

i don't know if i would like it.

electroplankton simply got my 40€ because everything around it was so cool and different.
elite beat agents is something more standard. and equally interesting therefore. but i won't forget about this game since i just love music games and i dont judge a game by its cover or before i tried to play through it.

(have donkey konga 1+2, dancing stage, electroplankton and also playin' o2jam and guitar hero)

I do have both, and I agree that Electroplankton is the more interesting title. EBA has awful, awful, gutwrenchingly cheesy music, suited primarily to 13-year-old outcast girls 'expressing' themselves in front of their bedroom mirrors with an air microphone and way too much make-up. It ruins the fun game mechanics for me. No. Just no.

Hey iNma, did you hear Ouenda! tracklist?
I read you hate J-Pop, but I didn't notice ANY J-pop in the game, so...it's just japanese music, a bit stranger and noisier than what western audience is used to, but definetly it's not j-pop.

And I find western music business is way worse than what you describe: everything is made to look cool; sure, everything is going to BE cool in Pop: drugs, money, being a prostitute, being a pimp, being a drug dealer, killing your friends...

Yeah, blame Slayer instead (I'm not SCREAMING the lyrics of Angel of Death for respect to your stupidity -talking to an offended reader-).

Drake

Just got EBA, and it's kind of a disappointment. Gameplay is naturally the same and still great, but the track selection is a bit poor. Both Ouendans are better (2 being the best if you ask me).

Phantom

I've been thinking about getting all 3 of the games eventually if I liked the gameplay....would it be best to start with EBA?(since its in English)

It seems like an ok game from what I've seen of it, but is it worth paying the £30 price that the tv advert says?

Drake
18th July 2007, 01:26 PM
You can start with any of the games really - The Japanese in both Ouendans is minimal (Moreso in the first then the second) and stories are told through both pictures and text, so you can usually tell what's going on by just looking at the pictures. It just really comes down to what music you want - English or wacky Japanese music.

EBA's tracklist is here, you should know most of them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_Beat_Agents#Track_listing

OTO's tracklist is here, but I bet you won't know a single one of them (However, a lot of the music videos of the original versions of the OTO songs are on YouTube, so you could check those out): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osu%21_Tatakae%21_Ouendan#Track_listing

neuzd

I already told this: it's a rhythm game. The understanding of the tetx is NOT NEEDED!
The "comics" that show in hte upper screen are descriptive enough to understand what people are saying each other (stupid things of course, it's set in a demential japanese environment!).

If I got it right, EBA spots some improvement that was absent in the original Ouendan!. I think that the tracklist is the most important thing to check.
Ouendan! has surely more strange music which, by my point of view, means more fun and interest.

Jazzem
18th July 2007, 01:32 PM
I'd advise going with Ouendan 1 first. Might as well start with the beginning of the series! Plus although I think it's the best in the series, Ouendan 2/Elite Beat Agents do have little improvements such as skipping song intros (Handy if you're rubbish at a song and have to keep re-trying it!), giving you an option to see where you went wrong on Game over, rumble pak support (Which works really well!) and just general presentation improvements. It'd be better to go from Ouedan without these to one of the other two games with them than vice versa.

I'd advise going Ouendan->Elite Beat Agents->Ouendan 2. I went through that order but with Ouendan 2/Elite Beat the other way around. I was happy enough with that, but EBA is probably the easiest, and since I've had so much practice with the gameplay mechanics, it isn't very challenging to me. Plus Ouendan 2 is the hardest by quite a distance, so best leave that to last!

Whatever the case, make sure you play at least one of the games, it's easily the best series of games exclusive to the DS, and three of my all time favourite games :) And don't worry about the Japanese language barrier, the stories are easy enough to understand (Although one on Ouendan 2 will seem very random until you know the folk tale it's based on!), and the gameplay easy to work out.

(On another note, I just S ranked all of Normal on Ouendan 1, yay!)

EDIT: (And not only that, I just reached the top title rank too! :D)

Thanks for the suggestions, I think I'll start with Ouendan first! Any websites you'd suggest ordering from or should I just use Playasia again? I couldn't afford to get it when they had that 20% off sale.... :(

Btw it wasn't the ingame text I was worried about (I've played J!US which is pretty much all Japanese), it was more about wanting the instructions so I'd understand the controls/rules for the game...it looks kinda confusing in the gameplay videos I've watched

The in game tutorial, even in Japanese, makes it very clear, as it demonstrates how you use the stylus for each mechanic in the game.

It'll take a little bit of getting used to, but once you do you're set =]

If worst comes to worst, just ask and we'll help out. I can't answer your order query I'm afraid, play-asia were great for me, but they're the only import website I've had experience with, and you may be able to get the game cheaper elsewhere.

Good point.
Videogamers should have GameFAQs (www.gamefaqs.com)bookmarked in their brains, though.

The 2 strangest "objects" are
1) a ball in a slider, which has to be dragged through all the lenght of the slide (and eventually back) in time with music.

2) the rotating wheel: make concentric loops with the stylus, like drawing a large spiral; just stay 'inside' the circle that appears(which is closing towards the center) and click the center once there's no more room.

These are the 2 "objects" we needed some explanation when we first saw the game.

Eh? I have never even done that, or had to as far as I know...

And isn't the zooming circle there only to show how long you have to spin the wheel? I've never heard about having to stay inside it.

(Bear in mind that if I'm wrong on both accounts, I'm going to feel very silly!)

I'm guessing, I admit it!!!!
I don't own the game, I played a lot of times, snice the friend of mine who has it, loves it.
For the wheel-center thing: he often misses the section, while I'm sure I get an OK when the section ends; and I always do a click (or I take the stylus on the center) at the last moment. And, more important, I'm sure there's another DRIIN! when I do it.

For the spiraling...well, I do it that way, and for the reason I (think) have to click the center in the end, I always interpreted that way....

But I repeat: I don't have the game and I'm guessing/remembering, so.....well sorry if anything's plain wrong.

I just got perfect on Y.M.C.A on Sweatin' with over a million points, but it only gave me a B.
Why is that?
To get an S rank you not only need to get a Perfect, but you need to get mostly 300s from the beats. You are allowed to get some 100s (About 8 on Breezin', 15 on Cruisin', 22 on Sweatin' and Hard Rock) and less than 1% of the beats is allowed to be a 50 (So usually only 1-4).

And neuzd, you only need to fill up the meters to the side of the wheel to make it. Spinning more gets you bonus points (Which are next to useless on higher difficulties since you get tons more points from beats). There is no reason to move the stylus to the center.

A tip for wheel spinning that I always use is to quickly turn the DS sideways and rest your spinning hand on the top screen while madly spinning with it on the bottom screen. Turn the DS back around when the wheel is about to disappear though, especially on higher difficulties where beats will usually appear right after the wheel disappears.

Mendez
18th July 2007, 03:41 PM
Wow, I never realised it was that strict. I just got myself an A on Y.M.C.A Breezin with 1 50 and 12 100s.
Thing is, why did I need to be told that before I could do it? =| I think I was at C before.
Thanks for that Drake.
Edit: Oh, and another thing: Are misses allowed at all?

Jazzem
18th July 2007, 03:44 PM
For S ranks, no, you can't miss any beat circles. It's strict as you say! Howeverm if you manage to slip off a slider bar (So the agents fall down) but quickly get back on it, that isn't counted as a miss, so you can still get an S rank.

It just takes off so much of the Yes/No bar if you miss a beat you can't really afford to miss any as they lurk in bunches.

I think I can tackle everything now. EBA is fairly easy compared to OTO 1 and 2.

All of your skills make me look cráp at it!
How long have you been playing for?
On Y.M.C.A Sweatin' I managed to get 25 100s and 1 50, so I alllmost got my S...

Drake

I've only had EBA since wednesday.

Keep in mind though I've had Ouendan 1 and 2 for about 3 weeks now and they're both harder, so that gave me some good training.

I've unlocked ABC now 8)
I thought I was gonna find La La and Material Girl really hard, but once you get into them they're a breeze.
I have no idea what The Anthem will be like though...

Jazzem

The Anthem is pretty upbeat, so keep your wits about you :P It's definitely possible. And yeah, La La/Material Girl aren't too difficult.

And I finished this on Rock Hard last night! Heh, what a strange reward you get for it...

Definitely the easiest out of the three games, but still superb in itself, and easily one of my favourite DS games. Highlights being Makes No Difference, Highway, A Christmas Wish (My eyes actually watered the second time I played it ) and Jumping Jack Flash, lowlights being La La (Don't like the song) and Material Girl (Don't like the song or the story)

Mendez
21st July 2007, 02:00 PM
La La is alright, but I also hate the Material Girl song and story.
I'm seriously considering importing Ouendan 2 from my £36 I just got paid, but I'm unsure about all the J pop and I could just save it instead...
How long does play-asia delivery take?

Drake
21st July 2007, 02:26 PM
About a week.

I don't like the Material Girl story, but I do like the song, the beats on Sweatin' and Hard ROCK are pretty fun.

I like: Makes No Difference, YMCA, September, Canned Heat, Material Girl, The Anthem, Let's Dance, JJF, Believe
I dislike: Walkie Talkie Man, Rock This Town, I Was Born to Love You, Highway Star, La La, Without A Fight, ABC
I'm indifferent to: Sk8er Boi, You're the Inspiration, Survivor

Also, Survivor is godawful on Sweatin' and Hard ROCK, I say it's harder than JJF to S.

I'm currently trying to S every song in every difficulty and get the highest rank in the progress (Currently a Five Star Commander with about 6 million points to the next). Cruisin's almost done, I'll do Breezin' after that (It's actually pretty hard, you're only allowed like 6 100s).

Mendez

I just managed to finish The Anthem, so I suppose it's time for me to do Let's Dance. I had a quick go and it appears to be harder then The Anthem...
At least it's a better song with a better story I suppose.

Drake
22nd July 2007, 05:22 PM
Let's Dance is easier, trust me. Once you have the patterns down you'll breeze through it.

Mendez
22nd July 2007, 05:27 PM
Yeah, I know that now. I'd only had a few goes and couldn't quite get into it then.
I'm on the horrible one before Jumpin Jack Flash now...

Even though I try to collect(and play) most music games, I just can't get over the awful soundtrack of EBA. (writing this with Ouendan 2 soundtrack on) But I guess that's the problem with all western releases of japanese music games, they go and change the songs to western ones. See my IGN list for my (music)game collection^^

Just finished fully S-ing Breezin' and Cruisin'. ABC on Breezin' is extremely hard to S, beware. Also somehow managed to S Survivor on Sweatin'.

EBA does have some bad songs, but if you ask me the good outweigh the bad. Ouendan has some bad ones too though (I'm not really fond of Koi no Dance Site and Neraiuchi in 1 and Go My Way and Countdown in 2 for example).

I actually like all the songs on Ouendan 1 and 2...but I guess I may be a bit of a J-pop fan.
I could understand not liking the Morning Musume song though, it's certainly cheesy.
Se-xy Bi-muuuuuuuuuuuuuu XD Awesome lyrics :D
And Linda Yamamoto is a bit too Enka for most westerners, I love it though
If I ever find EBA in a bargain bin I might pick it up for the collection.

In all honesty, the only songs I'd say I dislike from all three games are La la, Material Girl (Although it does make for good rhythms) and 'Bang! Bang!' (Ouendan 2). I wasn't too fond of Koi No Dance Site (That was the violinist stage, right?) from the first one, but still enjoyed it.

Not all of the songs in the games are necessarily what I'd usually listen to, but they generally work very well in the context of the games =]

It would be nice for EBA 2 to keep a J Pop soundtrack (like Ontamarama by Atlus will) but I doubt they will do that

Koi no Dance Site is the receptionist stage (The one trying to impress her coworker).

I'm getting fed up with Jumpin Jack Flash :x
I just got a bad first cut scene without getting 1 miss and a score of 187k, which with the same score I had the yes bar at top before. It's confusing me =S
Edit: And now I just lost without a single miss =/
Are you supposed to get an S or something?!

Drake
23rd July 2007, 04:52 PM
Getting a lot of 50s will drop your bar, so try not to get too much of them.

100s will keep it around the same place it's already in.

300s will fill it slightly.

If you fill up a spinner, then it'll boost the bar by a reasonable amount.

Rollers will not get you much while rolling, but finishing them should get you a tiny boost as well.

Mendez
23rd July 2007, 05:32 PM
I managed to get to the 4th part but lost. I've found my bar at the very bottom when getting mainly 300s with some 100s...
It's weird, because on different plays it seems to go down at different rates even if I do just as well in both of them :?
I also found if I get 100 on a bar it drops by a considerable amount.

I had to take a break due to anger, but I'll get there XD

If that's because you go off the bar briefly and the agents fall down, then as I remember that'll take off a fair chunk off the Yes/No bar.

Keep at it, it's definitely possible, and it gives you a great sense of achievement finally doing it!

Mendez

Nah, they don't actually fall. I usually get to the 3rd part without losing a bit. My first miss is normally at around 250-300 combo.

Go search for "Elite Beat Agents <song name> ALL 300" on YouTube, there's one guy in particular who's managed to clear EVERY song with only 300s.

EDIT: All done, S rank on everything on all difficulties. I've got replays of an S on every Hard ROCK song saved (All with Kahn), I'll record them sometime soon.

Now back to Ouendan 2.

Mendez
24th July 2007, 09:01 PM
You make me feel pathetic! I can't even get an S on the first songs! I got 6 100s and 46 300s on I was born to love you Breezin', but it only gave me an A. Must be because there's so little beats...

Pegasus
25th July 2007, 03:54 AM
I couldn't fathom ever 300-ing all songs, not to even mention a tenth of them.

Well, I finally took it on myself to complete all stages with a star. I got so mad at Jumpin' Jack Flash on Hard Rock. I kept failing it because of the numerous wheels and the 13-string quick-beats; Without A Fight was very easy, in comparison.

Now I've already started to work on getting S ranks. It sure ain't that easy. It was funny when I played the easier modes for the first few times again I kept failing because they were too slow for me. I sure got used to those fast beats.

I love this game! (even when I hated it) So addicting. It's too bad that the two Ouendan titles will be out of the question for me because of my loathing for J-pop. Let's hope EBA 2 will be made sooner, rather than later.

Mendez

I think I'll have to try and take a break. All the spinners have given me a bad shoulder which hurts if I look up or turn my neck :(
Those things are the worst thing about the game in my opinion, they just drive me insane.

Mendez

I'm never gonna pass Rock This Town on hard-rock. It's just so hard keeping a straight face when the Diva's do that dance from the very start because of the fans...
I just laugh and miss the next beats each time ¬_¬

Drake
26th July 2007, 01:45 PM
Always remember that Hard ROCK's beats are the exact same as in Sweatin', except flipped horizontally and vertically, and there's a few (Only like 6) extra beats.

Mendez
26th July 2007, 01:58 PM
Yeah, and you have about a 6th of the reaction time. I keep treating the lines you have to follow as single beats, and I keep missing them with my stylus because of the size.
I wish the game had just stuck with Sweatin' to be honest :(

Pegasus
28th July 2007, 10:11 PM
It's all about the challenge.

I find it interesting that Sweatin' is a lot easier to S-rank than Breezin'. I already have a good few more S's in the former. It also helps that there's a greater allowance of 100s and 50s. I don't have a real system for improving my ranks. I just pick whatever seems good to me at the time.

My screens definitely damaged by the games now.

If the screens blank with the console on, I can now see smudges of darker black due to overpressuring the screen, right where I rotate the spinners.

I'm really worried the caliberation is gonna mess up now, it's already happened to me, my friend and my brother with the big DS's.

If I have to pay £100 for a new Lite because of the spinners, I won't be amused.

Well I finally have this game now since my bro got it me for xmas....this game is hard! But fun like you lot were saying.

I keep getting misses for some reason so my highest ranking (on breezin'!) is "B" on the "Art and Beauty!" and "Family Honor" stages.

The last stage I did was "A Christmas Gift"...How touching!

Is this a known problem? This was a concern of mine when I first bought a DS Lite and this game about 4-5 weeks ago. I know this game destroyed the screen protector that I bought for my DS but I thought it was because the screen protector that I bought was crappy. The game played like crap with the protector and when I took it off I was able to play EBA a lot better but I was worried that it would now destroy my DS touch screen.

That must be it since my screen protector did extremely well even after long play-sessions, and I only use generic Gamestop ones. I also have no problem whatsoever playing the game with them.

Playing touch-intensive games without screen protectors is just asking for trouble.

I've never had a problem, and I've played a lot of Ouendan/EBA without screen protectors. I don't know how common the problem is but it might be down to how much pressure is used by the individual player.
