How durable is the DS touch screen? When I purchased my DS the other day I picked up a pack of screen protectors but the one that I just put on it seems to be not lasting long. It get’s smudged very easily and seems to attract dust more so then the normal screen. Do I need the protectors? I’m looking for an answer from a seasoned DS veteran please….someone who’s owned one over 6 months.

Also, what accessories do you guys recommend?

Thanks! :D

When I first got my DS I used screen protectors but eventually I stopped using them, and now with my DS lite, which I've had for over a year, I've never used them. Since the DS is back-lit you can't see any marks on the surface of the screen when it's on, it's just like how you don't normally notice dust on a TV screen when it's switched on. Just from inspecting the screens now, they're pretty smudged (which can be cleaned) and there are a few small scratches but as soon as you turn it on you don't see any of that because the backlight shines through and that gets rid of everything. It's not like the GBAs where you can see every little smudge, they relied on external light, or a front light like the SP, you don't get the same problem on DS.

My advice is just not to worry, the screens are very durable (I've been quite hard on them sometimes when playing), you won't enjoy playing it if you keep worrying about damaging it, and even if you do get some minor scratches you won't see it when it's on. To me a bit of minor wear after a year of heavy use is acceptable, at this rate after 5 years of use I still think it'll be playable (and by then it'll be very cheap to replace). I don't use any accessories at all.

What about a case?

Personally I don't bother with a case. That's not to say I don't take good care of it, but my opinion is that if you worry too much about damaging it all the time it defeats the point of having a handheld, which is that you can carry it around conveniently in your pocket. If you have too many accessories it takes away some of that convenience. It's up to you if you want to get a case, it might avoid some cosmetic damage over the years but you won't easily break it.

Thanks for the advice:D

I don't get scratches Because I'm a lite toucher, But I do use a case that can fit intk a jacket pocket holds my DS 8 games and 6 or seven gba games I also use metal styluses.

I rather have screen protectors than a damaged screen, any day. I've been using generic Gamestop ones with good results. That last set I've just recently replaced lasted me about half a year (for the rather minimal cost of five bucks), but it also depends on how much one uses one's DS, obviously. Anyways, the touch screen protector was pretty scratched up, but once peeled off it revealed a pristine screen underneath. With the new set it looks like new again. ;)

Cases for the DS are a waste. Too bulky to be of much use. I just use a cloth sleeve to protect the outside of the system from getting scratched up, when I have it with me on the go.

I got my DS Lite around March time and I've never used any covers, although the touch screen and back of the DS is scratched quite a bit.

As far as cases go, I was thinking of buying one of the portfulio type cases not one of the large box/backpack style cases. The only reason I'm still thinking about one is I'm afraid for droping it, not really scratches to the outside of the DS. I really find everyone's comments helpful.

Just a few months after I got my DS, I encountered a strange and annoying problem with it: the very center of the touch screen stopped responding. I've tried using the old "scrape dust out of the edges with a toothbrush" solution, but to no avail. It still has that problem, so I can't do small tasks like recalibrate the screen anymore. Other than that little flaw, the screen is very sturdy and works great.

Why didn't you return it?

Why didn't you return it?
Because by the time the screen started messing up, I had lost my receipt, along with most of the DS' packaging.:(
