View Full Version : Dreamcast

We haven't talked about Dreamcast much on here before and we really should, it's one of my favourite systems. I'm reluctantly putting this in retro gaming, I don't know whether it's retro yet (it's SEGA's current system as far as I'm concerned and it's in the league of the PS2 which still has games made for it), but I think I'll be criticised if I put it anywhere else.
The Dreamcast is the console that deserved to win last generation. The hardware was well ahead of its time, it could keep up with the PS2 even though arrived over a year before, it was full of innovations, it was the first online console, the first console with a PAL 60Hz mode as standard (and it was supported by almost all games), SEGA were in their prime as developers and it had all the best games at the time. In my opinion, despite its short life, the quality of games during that time more than made up for it only lasting a couple of years or so. I don't know anyone who regrets buying a Dreamcast.
We've already discussed whether it'll come to VC, and I doubt it's possible. Maybe next-gen it'll be possible. But let's keep this topic to discussion about the original hardware and games.
I'm going to borrow Jackaroo's questions from the Game Gear topic:
What Dreamcast games do you own?
Whats your favourite Dreamcast game?
Do you own a Dreamcast?
Do you still get/play games for your Dreamcast?
And anything else you want to say about Dreamcast.

What Dreamcast games do you own? Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Sonic Shuffle, The Legacy of Kain : Soul Reaver, Powerstone 1 & 2 (Well not anymore. Got them on PSP now so i gave the DC versions to my friend as a christmas present :D), Unreal Tournament, 5 In 1 Racing (Crazy Taxi 1&2, Tokyo Xtreme Racer 1&2 and Suzuki Something or other) and many more.
Whats your favourite Dreamcast game? Sonic Adventure 2
Do you own a Dreamcast? I certainly do :D
Do you still get/play games for your Dreamcast? I havent bought any DC Games in a while. But i still play it from time to time. At one point or another ill come back and go on the chao's again :D.
Dreamcast IMO is retro now but i only think that because production has been stopped for a long time. And to me i find most of the games on it are instant classics. I cant really say that about any current gen games or about any PS2, Xbox or Gamecube games. Thats what makes it retro to me ;). I love my dreamcast and my parents have suggested i get rid of it a few times but i never will. I got mine on christmas one day and i never expected it since i didnt even ask for it. Im glad i did get it though and its now one of my favourite systems of all time.

They still release new Dreamcast games over in Japan. Heck, they are releasing a new Sega Genesis game in Brazil I believe. America just doesn't love Sega as much as the other guys. Anyway, I never owned one but I played a friends once. Forget what the games he had were...

What Dreamcast games do you own? Power Stone 1 & 2, Virtua Tennis 1 & 2, WWF Royal Rumble, GTA2, Sonic Adventure, Dead or Alive 2, Daytona USA 2001, Jet Set Radio, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter 3 Third Strike, Capcom vs Snk & Street Fighter Alpha 3 8-)
Whats your favourite Dreamcast game? Man thats a tough one, I'll do a top 5 in no order
Jet Set Radio
Street Fighter Alpha 3
GTA2
Virtua Tennis (Both)
Street Fighter 3 Third Strike
Do you still get/play games for your Dreamcast? I used to up until it starting doing the dreaded act of reseting itself all the time. I think I'm going too have to perform that surgery again.

Man i forgot all about Jet Set/Grind Radio. That game was pure awesomness. The music was cheesy but great, The gameplay was just awesome and the cell shaded graphics were incredible. Plus Beat is one cool character. If anyone hasnt played this game just play it. Or do some research then play it. Its awesome!

I agree 100%. Its one of my favourite games ever, I'm not sure where I'd rank it but its definately in my 10 top ten. I think the best word to describe it is unique.
They should make a sequel for the new consoles, especially the Wii!! Can you imagine spraying the graphiti with this baby :wiimote: !!
And you could upload ur own graphiti via SD Card.

Ah yes, Jet Set Radio was the game that I remember playing on Dreamcast at my friends. Also, it is spelled graffiti not graphiti. Graphiti is a graphing calculator program.

I'll answer the questions.
What Dreamcast games do you own?
Bangai-O
Shenmue
Shenmue 2
Virtua Fighter 3tb
Sonic Adventure
Chu Chu Rocket
Daytona USA 2001
Jet Set Radio
Metropolis Street Racer
Resident Evil CODE Veronica
SEGA Rally 2
Crazy Taxi
Crazy Taxi 2
SEGAGAGA (Japanese import)
And for completeness:
Dream On Collection 2 (Demo disc)
Dream On volume 8 (including SEGA Swirl)
I should point out that I have Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure 2 and Ikaruga on Gamecube. If I'd have been a bit earlier getting a Dreamcast I would probably own the Dreamcast versions.
Whats your favourite Dreamcast game?
Shenmue. No contest, it's my favourite game on any console. It's on none of your lists, have none of you played it?
I should also mention Bangai-O from Treasure. Excelent 2D shooter, very overlooked but one of Treasure's best, need I say more? And Sonic Adventure, my favourite Sonic game, the game I bought with my Dreamcast and it brings back great memories of the day I got it (which was only in 2002 because I was late in buying one). Those are my favourite three.
Do you own a Dreamcast?
I own 2, but one is faulty.
Do you still get/play games for your Dreamcast?
Yes, from time to time, and I'll still buy new games when I see ones I want.

I'm well aware that not everyone likes it, I can't understand why at all, maybe people expect it to be an action game when they should think of it as an RPG. But it doesn't matter.

i loved shenmue 1&2..
played 1 on DC and 2 on XB..
still waiting for part 3 as 2 had such a beautiful and exciting ending.
and yeah itīs no action game.. itīs not an RPG either..
itīs an adventure.
presentation, graphics and soundtrack were amazing. the many people on the streets... and the city.. everything was extremely detailed and you could talk to anyone and take pictures of hongkong beauties :)
I love involving games where much happens in terms of simulating a life, a world, and this series is just that.
There where parts just to hang around and try stuff, play darts, card games, pachinko, buy useless SEGA figurines and other curious items or sit and wait and watch the sun set,
and Shenmue has arcade oldies
(just like Animal Crossing has NES originals)
I played classics such as Out Run and Space Harrier.
Oh yes, Shenmue is absorbing, if you donīt expect an action game.
5 Stars
as for other DC games:
i liked the fishing game with that fishing-rod-controller and chu chu rocket.
i also have these DC games on Gamecube:
Evolution Worlds (very short RPG, was disappointing - itīs over after the third dungeon)
Phantasy Star Online Episode I&II (played it more than 400 hours in offline mode, so this is truly an epic game)
Skies of Arcadia Legends (awesome RPG, hard to tell whats better - PSO or SoAL? Theyre too different. Skies is the better solo experience though.)
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (best sonic imo)

Good that someone else likes Shenmue. What's amazing is how great it still looks, even though it's over 7 years old. The soundtrack is perfect, I bought the official CDs as well, it's great to listen to even on it's own. Best game ever made. When you compare it to Yakuza on PS2 which is kind of a similar game from Sega but only 2 or 3 years old, Shenmue still looks better.
I played Shenmue 2 on Dreamcast, then Xbox, I prefer the Dreamcast version because I think the Japanese voice acting fits better (even though it's set in Hong Kong), and you get to transfer your capsule toy collection from Shenmue 1, that way you actually stand a chance of completing some of it and earning some money from selling them.

Yes, it did, it has the best ending I've ever seen in a game. It would be amazing if Shenmue 3 happens, I don't think it will now, but you can always sign the petition.

I read on another forum that from playing Shenmue some guy got really interested in japanese culture. Then when he was in college there was a japanese girl there and he started asking her about japan and stuff and then seven years later they were married and had a kid.
I dont quite remember what forums it was on. It might of been on the forum part for shenmue on gamespot. Ill check and send a link if its still there.
EDIT : Cant find it there but i remember it was on gamespot. They delete old topics though so i suspect thats what happened.

What?! It's well ahead of the PS1 however you look at it, some games (for instance Shenmue) haven't been matched even on PS2. The Dreamcast isn't any more 'in line with the Playstation 1' than the Wii is! They're both game consoles, but beyond that there's no comparison.

Loved my dreamcast and personally thought it was the better of the last gen consoles. Just a shame they discontinued it.
Wasnt a great fan of Shenmue though. It never really seemed to have an ending and was far to short, then shenmue 2 wasnt even translated into English (i could speak some very good japanese after playing that;)). Think it was supposed to be a 7 part series of games if i remember correctly which would explain why it had no ending.
For the best games, Sonic adventure is often forgotten about (better than the 2nd one) and of course MSR which gave way to project gotham racing on the Xbox. Then of course there was house of the dead 2 and confidential mission.
Couldnt complain as well that Currys used to sell the games for Ģ5 and on a BOGOF scheme. I must have had 40 games back when it died.
And definitely not equivalent to PS1, I actually thought it was better visually than the PS2 and dont forget it was the pioneer of online play in consoles.

then shenmue 2 wasnt even translated into English (i could speak some very good japanese after playing that:wink:).You say that as if it's a bad thing, the Xbox version had English voice acting and I thought it was worse for it. And I picked up some Japanese as well. :)
Think it was supposed to be a 7 part series of games if i remember correctly which would explain why it had no ending. At the time Shenmue 2 was released there was still planned to be at least another game, but when Sega stopped making home consoles Shenmue was pushed to the side, there was no announcement that it would be abandoned but it's been over 6 years with no information. It was never meant to be the ending, but that last disc is great I don't care what people say.

I absolutley loved Shenmue when it came out. It was the first 3D game I played that felt like I was truly in a living, breathing world. Even though the voice acting wasn't very polished,(the guy's voice that was "americanized" was painful to listen to) the diversity and sheer amount of dialogue packed into that game was amazing. I never really ventured too far into the fighting system but it seemed incredibly deep for a game that revolved around many different genres. Actually, I remember thinking that it felt very much like Virtua Fighter in an RPG. The graphics and score were also top notch. I'd really like to play this game again to see how well it has held up over the years. For whoever who said the game is short, that may very well be the case if you just play the sequences that directly effect the storyline. However, if you take your time and get yourself involved with all the game has to offer its a very, very, deep and rewarding experience. Also, near the end of the game where you're on the highway with your woman on the motorcycle is one of my favorite video gaming moments ever. It has been a while since I've even thought about Shenmue but the more I think about it now the more I think how awesome that experience was.
As for the Dreamcast itself, it was awesome. I need me some Jet Grind Radio dammit!!! There are so many unbelievably special gaming experiences to be had on that console. Need to get me an Ebay account and acquire one. I'm an idiot for selling mine.

Because a lot of the Best Games (IK-A-RUUUUUUG-AAAAAAA) have been re-released onto other consoles (Like my Wii's Built in Gamecube), And My parents are always getting onto me about how many consoles I have.
I have:
a Mega Drive which I haven't played since 1997
An SNES which is MIA (presumed Dead)
A (coughchippedcoughed) Playstation which is in my closet. I was around 8 when my parents decided to get it chipped and it was a BAD idea. Most games I bought after that were destroyed (melted/scratched) by the Playstation or were unplayable, and the System Hardware failures were plentiful. NEVER CHIP A CONSOLE. EVER. Seriously.
A PS2 that is ALWAYS plugged in. Because I loves my PS2. And sometimes I like to play PS1 games on it. I gottsa get FFVI.
A Wii (which is also Technically a Gamecube) which I love.
An Xbox 360 which I have yet to hook up for my little brother. And It doesn't have Live and it only has TWO games: FIFA 2007 and NBA Live.
There is an incarnation of every Gameboy (except the Lite, Pocket and Micro)
There are 3 DSes in my House.
I have a PSP (Which I really love despite having 4 Games - 2 of which I play regularly)
Probably much More I've forgotten.
Yeah; so lotta consoles... Keep in mind all were bought in my lifetime.
Maybe when I get to Uni I'll spring for a Dreamcast.

I don't think Sega's planning on getting back into the console market. It may just be a kind of market research poll to find out how much underground / cult support their console has. It's possible that they're planning some kind of short production run software, but even that's a stretch...

Apparently people have tried to register but haven't got a response. Now they're taken it down "Due the high volume of account requests", which suggests that there are a lot of people who still own Dreamcasts. It could also be some kind of hoax so I'm waiting a bit to see how it turns out first.
The Dreamcast has a very strong following for a non-current console, and the last official game release was in 2007, amazingly. It's still a capable machine so some more limited game releases wouldn't be impossible if the console is still popular, here's hoping. People who register get an account "@user.dreamcast.com", which would be great to have as an e-mail address if Sega are offering it.

Looks cool but id rather have the actual console. The console isnt big at all and has only 2 wires. Its easy to take with you to places and is cheaper than the portable one. I would go for the portable one if it could run off a battery pack or something but its only AC/Car adapters that it runs off so to me seems a bit pointless.

What? Wait. Wait?!
The Dreamcast won't come to the Virtual console. It was a disc based system and the games are WAY to big.
Also, wasn't the Dreamcast region locked? Is there any way to make it region free?

Yeah, it ll be years before we see DC on the VC (Probably if Wii 2 has huge storage space and the ability to store large games like that)
Got my hands on Sonic Adventure yesterday (Its a sin to own a Sega console without any Sonic :P). Sightly better then the GC rerelease, though the character models during the cut scenes could of been better.
Ah well, maybe I ll hunt the better SA2 at some point...

I always wanted to get Blue Stinger, but could never find it. On another note, I loved Sonic Adventure, but hated the sequel.

What Dreamcast games do you own?
Legit games:
Shenmue
Sega Rally 2
Marvel Vs Capcom 2
Test Drive Lemans
Daytona USA 2001 (import)
F344 Challenge
Vigilante 8 - 2
Soul Calibur
Dino Crisis
Resident Evil CV
NFL2K
+ many more backups
Whats your favourite Dreamcast game?
Pick one of MvC2, Powerstone, Jet Set Radio, SFRush 2030
Do you own a Dreamcast?
Yes
Do you still get/play games for your Dreamcast?
Now and then... mostly when I travel (I travel with work sometimes for weeks at a time and stay in a condo) I take the DC because it's cheap to replace if anything happens and it's become a tradition that it's what I play when I'm away from home

Couple of Dreamcast questions.
Basically, I got my hands on a Japanese copy of Marvel Vs Capcom 2 (Can you believe it was inside a Ģ3 pal copy of Quake III?). So anyway:
1. I brought some US VMUs. Would they be able to save Japanese Game Saves or would I have to get a Japanese one? If a US one works, then I take it I should use it just for Japanese saves right?
2. Anyone know of a translation guide or something? There's a fair bit of English in the game, but there's also a far bit of Japanese too. T.T

Your US memory card will be fine. The main difference between the Jap and US MvC2 is that you won't be able to unlock all the fighters. The Japanese version relied on players taking their memory cards to the arcade and downloading fighters from there.
Have fun though! A great find!

I forgot to add, you can have US and Japanese saves on the same VMU, so no worries there.

Now I ve reached another problem.
I brought a new Japanese game and my import disc won't let me playing it. After the switch-aroo between the import disc and the game, after its loaded I just get a black screen. My Japanese copy of Marvel Vs Capcom 2 still works. :/
Might it be the game (Its Cardcaptor Sakura Tomoyo No Video Daisakusen, and it was cheap :P) or perhaps the import disc (I can check the name of it. I believe it said Version 1.1, so I dunno if I need a updated version or not. If it helps, a raindeer appears when I boot it up)?
Help? :(
